And submit them.
New cap tomorrow = price hike.

That it.
That's the thread.

Im completely missing something, why do I need to submit a reading tomorrow?

Prices go up significantly tomorrow, without an accurate reading there is a chance you could be paying the higher cost for power you have already used.

I'm submitting first thing, I'm not paying the higher charges tonight.

Plumpciousness · 30/09/2022 16:43

For British Gas customers: their website says to take meter readings today and use their online form to submit the readings by 14 October. Smart meter or PAYG customers don't need to submit readings.

It seems that some (all?) energy providers are accepting readings for a few days into October, presumably to avoid overloading their web/phone systems. Check your supplier though.

If you don’t have a smart meter, wouldn’t it be sensible to take your readings on 13th October?

Yes I have had similar to that. They hound me.

When does it become a harassment?😂 Combined with physical mail and even had few phonecalls missed from apparently edf not so long ago😂

primeoflife · 30/09/2022 22:32

@Hoppinggreen don't be confused you just aren't using as much power as they thought that's why your direct debit has gone down. It went up to make sure you had some credit for when prices go up and now they can see from your usage you can reduce. Mine has been reduced too as I'm £460 in credit.

primeoflife · 30/09/2022 22:33

@Hoppinggreen so you aren't on a magical tariff!!

Don’t you have a key for the external meter cupboard?

No never had one the metres are read by the company they have the keys.

bellac11 · 30/09/2022 22:36

I will see if I can read them, bit late for all this, I didnt realise

But just logging into my account and its totally confusing, it says that from 1st October I will be paying 108pm on 15th of each month. It then says above it, that I will be paying 172pm on the 15th of each month.

That doesnt even make any sense

OMG that is even worse than me! That's like 2-3 times WEEKLY! And yeah, they do try and bully don't they?! With you, it IS harassment now!

bellac11 · 30/09/2022 22:48

Can someone help me understand this

I last did a reading 58 days ago, lets say 2 months

Ive just done the readings again and now its saying that my electricity has been debited 171 and the gas 24

Does that imply that we've used 171 pounds worth of electricity in 2 months?

Doe sit correspond to your kwh usage?

Yes, but it’s usual for the householder to have one too. They’re normally standard yellow plastic things, not truly keys. Borrow one if you want an accurate read. Or probably harder at stores sell them.

OhThatChicken · 30/09/2022 23:05

Lying in bed reading Mumsnet on my phone... dressing gown on, out on the drive in my dressing gown at 11pm!

And my energy company had me in a virtual waiting room waiting to sign in!

Thank you SO much for posting!

I dont know what that means

The last meter reading on the bill was my reading in August of 52870
Tonights reading is 53370

I dont know how or if that corresponds to usage, what does that mean?

I literally cannot make head nor tail of the bills, theres just numbers everywhere, with different dates and different periods of time.

I pay 29p for electric.

bloodywhitecat · 30/09/2022 23:11

Thank you, I had forgotten to do mine then this thread popped up. Reading taken and submitted.

SequinsandStilettos · 30/09/2022 23:15

Tempting, but I still suspect the jerks will then "estimate" two weeks' usage entirely in their favour.

So between the date of the 52870 reading and the date of the 53370 reading you used 2500 units (55370 minus 52870 = 2500). Multiply that by the cost to you if each kWh.

Then find out what your daily standing charge is and multiply that by 58 days.

Add the two together.
Then do exactly the same for the gas.
See if those amounts match the new charges.

no smart meter- hypothetically could someone exaggerate their readings to make them higher and be charged for future use at below the cap price?
not that i would ever consider doing it myself

I was just going to enter my Mums reading for her but the energy company have already logged an estimated reading which is quite a bit higher than her actual use. It would save money if I don't submit her reading

They may just reissue a bill with a re estimate that profits them more? Certainly one BG bill I had was reissued, claiming it was based on an actual reading they had definitely not had been given by me, so trust nae fucker.

bellac11 · 30/09/2022 23:32

The bills are a nightmare, I seem to have two gas bills for August and one electric bill. It doesnt tell you what they are until you open them.

Once you download them from your account it doesnt actually have the date on them at the top of the bill so Ive forgotten once Ive opened it which one Im looking at.

The electric bill is for 2 days, how on earth can that be?

Anyway it says the standing charge is 39.67 per day so x 58 is 2300

Then 2500 x 29p = 72500

So is that 74.80?

Is that right? Plus a bit of VAT, not sure how to work that out.

bellac11 · 30/09/2022 23:34

I dont want to ring them tomorrow and complain if Ive got that wrong

ThunderstomsAreComing · 30/09/2022 23:45

TheClitterati · 30/09/2022 20:45

Good job everyone.

I have a smart meter but it doesn't work. My first winter in this house with the smart meter (my first) it was telling me extraordinary daily rates. So we basically froze. Then I figured out the meter figures were way off. It made me unnecessarily anxious & was wrong so I packed the screen away.

Bulb used to read remotely but British Gas don't. Just wacky estimates. So much data yet always do wrong.

It sounds like its your in house display that is not working - not the smart meter itself, which will be in a white box outside. With my gas meter I have to press the buttons to get the display to come up, and then it gives me the reading, plus how much I have used in £ since the last bill. The electricity meter shows it without needing to press anything.

InCheesusWeTrust · 30/09/2022 23:47

I think the vat is included here.

Don't stress it, really. Once it clicks what is what, you will be laughing. Some things just for whatever reason don't click in the brain no matter how simple they are for quite a while. Happens to all of us.

Leave out the zero at the end. You should have 4 numbers. 2500kwh is a yearly use, not 2 months unless you are growing certain plants, but then you wouldn't need to worry about bills!

So it's (250 x 0.29) + (58 x 39.67) = 72.5 + 23 = 95.5 so approx £1.64 a day

InCheesusWeTrust · 30/09/2022 23:48

That was for @bellac11
