I'm mean, obviously, she's a crashing snob, and small-minded and ridiculously bourgeois...

But, the outfits. The exquisite enunciation. The way she batters Jerry and Tom down with a single phrase. Magnificent 😁

Poorly at home at the moment - this thread has cheered me up!

megletthesecond · 30/09/2022 15:37

Margo was my nickname at Glastonbury. I took wine, proper cutlery and a washing up bowl.

billy1966 · 30/09/2022 16:11

Adored it and her.
Tom irritated me.
Jerry was lovely too.

I really enjoyed her in Too the Manor born.

Lovely shows and definitely amongst my favourites of the period.

I'm trying to find the episode when they all get pissed...

With the dishwasher and the flirting? I love that one.

Piglet89 · 30/09/2022 16:24

OMG she is my absolute hero.

Piglet89 · 30/09/2022 16:26

Sadly, there’s just an online portal to pay council tax by DD now…

Youdoyoutoday · 30/09/2022 16:27

I love her!!

LadyPenelope68 · 30/09/2022 16:31

Oh I absolutely loved her character. I have an Auntie who is just like her (we call her Margot), she is a joy to be around 🤣

Leeds2 · 30/09/2022 16:33

I read somewhere that Peter Bowles was actually the first choice to play Jerry, and Paul Eddington was second choice. Bowles did of course go on to star with Penelope Keith in To The Manor Born.

MargotLB · 30/09/2022 16:36

I just adore her style, glad to know I’m not the only one!

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 30/09/2022 16:37

I absolutely agree @Needhelp101 . Penelope Keith plays this role exquisitely! It's a widely known fact (well, was back in the day!) that MARGO was the most popular character of the 4 main characters. Indeed, she wasn't featured hugely for the first few episodes, and the viewers wrote furious letters to the BBC, DEMANDING she be featured more. (And she was!)

She is awesome! Grin

@Theluggage15

I absolutely love her. When she’s helping in Tom and Barbara’s garden all done up in her waterproofs and galoshes, totally a fish out of water but still gamely trying to help. What a woman.

Oh, when she tries to prove how strong she is and throws the heavy sack over her shoulder, and knocks Tom, Barbara, and Jerry all over like dominoes!!! 😂

Agree with pps too, that To The Manor Born is great too!

she had such great chemistry with both of them.

I've started re-watching the Irish R.M and Peter Bowles is so charming in that.

I love the scene where Margo goes to pay her council tax and is not taking any crap from the official at all when she deducts an amount for the drains outside her home 😆

#goals

I loved that scene! 🤣

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 30/09/2022 16:51

@Piglet89 that's the one! I also love the scene where she complains about her pottery teacher and Jerry stuffs a hanky in his mouth 😁

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 30/09/2022 16:57

Oh and does anyone else remember the one where Jerry comes home having helped the Goodes, and Margo make him stand on newspaper when he gets in, just waltzes up, takes his cigarette from his mouth as he's talking?

She was so brilliantly, wonderfully self-assured!

LimeCheesecake · 30/09/2022 17:08

Tom and Barbara are horrible to Margo, even though she is lovely to them. She helps them, supports them, and they look down on her.

jerry has the wife and lifestyle he really wants.

Margo is so fabulous.

DialsMavis · 30/09/2022 17:09

My cat is also called Margot in homage 😻

Maireas · 30/09/2022 17:10

Margo is fab.
"Yuletide Felicitations to you, too"!

Maireas · 30/09/2022 17:12

I loved the way that she dealt with officious tradesmen and patronising officials. That woman took no nonsense!

Piffle11 · 30/09/2022 17:22

The scene where Margo stages a coup for president of the Music Society is perfection. And the episode where they're doing 'The Sound of Music' ... fabulous!

ChessieFL · 30/09/2022 17:22

Margo and Jerry were fab. I love Jerry’s baffled expressions when Margo goes off on one (especially his political chicken pox!)

Adored Margo

'Thats the last time I play the tart for you Gerry'

Can still her that voice now.....oh and the Xmas edition where her cracker joke was ''why is the Oooh Ah Bird so named?''
''Because it lays square eggs"

I didn't get Tom and Barbara....so goody two shoes....but Margo and Gerry - perfect.

She wouldn't wear the Daily Mirror hat, so they had to swap it for The Telegraph!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 29/09/2022 21:39

Nah, I don't get the appeal. I remember it well. Didn't find it particularly funny then, and it's even worse now. Very dated in its humour. One trick pony.

I liked 'The Young Ones' version.

We plant the seed, nature grows the seed, we eat the seed ...
