I'm mean, obviously, she's a crashing snob, and small-minded and ridiculously bourgeois...

But, the outfits. The exquisite enunciation. The way she batters Jerry and Tom down with a single phrase. Magnificent 😁

Unfortunately I can't think about 'hostess trolley' without hearing the late Victoria Wood singing to Barry, 'bend me over backwards on a hostess trolley'.

Beat me on the bottom with a Woman's Weekly 😁

I’m always saying “Well thank you very much Jerry” in a Margo voice in our house and everybody looks at me like this Confused

Although I have to confess it’s Barbara I really had the crush on when I used to watch it, she always looked amazing in overalls and I thought she was far too good for Tom.

Me too! Or if anyone else says "Thank you very much" I always have to add a loud "Jerry!" And yes, confused emoji is the face I get most often in return - philistines!

witchyw · 30/09/2022 06:38

YANBU
Margot is fabulous

Newt13 · 30/09/2022 07:15

No, you were right, it is "Margo".
I've only discovered that today as I was curious about so many missing off the t.
Everything online has Margo.
(She's the only one I'd ever heard of until Margot Robbie so I've no idea where I got the spelling from.)

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 30/09/2022 08:04

I love the scene where Margo goes to pay her council tax and is not taking any crap from the official at all when she deducts an amount for the drains outside her home 😆

#goals

Yanbu we were meant to go with the nice one whose name I cannot recall but Margo was the brilliant one

Jojoanna · 30/09/2022 08:23

I love Margo ! I want her life

HeadNorth · 30/09/2022 08:26

Margot is fabulous - I always thought Barbra was a bit feeble and wet.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 30/09/2022 08:33

Margo is probably my all time favourite sitcom character. Did you know that a lot of her clothes were actually from Harrods? Apparently the costume supervisor was determined to spend her entire clothing budget and, because Tom and Barbara obviously wore the same clothes for much of the series run, they needed to spend the budget so that it didn't get cut for the next episode!
There was a great show on Channel 5 recently - The Good Life: Secrets & Scandals. Not really that many scandals but a good watch, I thought. It's still available on the Channel 5 website.

I always think of Margo when I'm ordering my Christmas stuff! I too like to get as much stuff delivered as possible!

AirFryerNinja · 30/09/2022 08:35

A woman who lived opposite the house where I grew up was a real life Margot.
Every evening in the summer she would appear in her front garden wearing a kaftan, turban and a face full of make up to tend the roses with a pair of secateurs.
The difference is that she was married to a TV repair man....until she upped her game and ran off with her family doctor. 😂

Margot was brilliant. I still laugh at the image of her helping Tom and Barbara to get their veg in during a storm.
Margot dressed in a bright yellow Mac and sou'wester bringing Tom the sprouts....one at a time before ending up flat on her back 🤣

When my husband is getting on my nerves I retreat into a dream world where it is 1977 and I am married to Jerry Ledbetter.

Love Margo. That programme would have been nothing without Margo and Jerry. In the last episode, which ends on rather a discordant note, Margo is wearing this fabulous Missoni style red knitted maxi dress and looks fabulous. That’s after she had fiercely announced that Sir Andrew, Jerry’s boss, was an idiot for not having (they thought) appointed Jerry to the top job. Loyal and glamorous! Margo ruled.

One of the greatest tv characters ever. Who couldn’t love Margo. I even wanted to call our dog Margo but was outvoted.

Thruandthru1 · 30/09/2022 09:04

She’s so loveable

whoknowswhyanyonedoesanything · 30/09/2022 09:08

I watched a doc about The Good Life once (or about one of the actors, can't remember) and if I remember the original intention was to focus on T & B, with Jerry as the occasional neighbour interaction and Margot just a voice in the background (maybe a bit like Capt Mainwaring's Elizabeth), but the writers were so taken with Penelope Keith they kept giving her more to do and it ended up as a quartet. If you watch the first ep, Margot is just a voice through a window.

<Apologies>

About to lower the time but the same is true of Linda Gray & Larry Hagman in Dallas. Was meant to be about Bobby & Pam but Sue Ellen & JR were great characters so they got more to do.

Im sure there must be other shows where this happens also.

I was once in quite a long queue for gin at Festival No 6 when Penelope Keith hurtled to the front of the queue in a golf buggy whilst trilling "sorry darlings, I'm desperate!" The queue all agreed that Margot had gin queue exemption.

Oh yes I’d definitely defer to Margo in a queue (or PK), she was like a Queen, I might have even curtseyed 😁 Someone else mentioned Mildred Roper, another brilliant character whose cutting lines never date.

millymog11 · 30/09/2022 09:34

I love her. I wish there were shows like that on TV now. I am 51 tho. so I accept not everyone will share that view!

Needhelp101 · 30/09/2022 09:39

With regards to Margo/Margot, there's this wonderful quote from Lady Margot Asquith, when the actress Jean Harlow mispronounced her name:
" No dear, the 't' is silent, as in 'Harlow'

Thanks, it'll be going round in my head all day, it'll melt all the buttons on my flameproof nightie!

Claricethecat45 · 30/09/2022 12:11

Adored Margo

'Thats the last time I play the tart for you Gerry'

Can still her that voice now.....oh and the Xmas edition where her cracker joke was ''why is the Oooh Ah Bird so named?''
''Because it lays square eggs"

I didn't get Tom and Barbara....so goody two shoes....but Margo and Gerry - perfect.

One of the most famous recent ones is Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad - he was supposed to be killed off in Season One but the writers changed their minds and made him the second lead instead!

StrawberrySquash · 30/09/2022 13:10

I am very fond of Margo. She, for all her snobbery, is kind, without being a doormat. And she is friends with people who are very different from her, which is important. (I'd say without judging her them, but we all know that's not true!)

She’s honestly my idol, I love her. Our cats are Margo and Jerry in their honour.

I love that 😻😻

MarshaBradyo · 30/09/2022 15:02

It’s the laugh / smile that gets me too

She looks great
