To love Margo in The Good Life?

I'm mean, obviously, she's a crashing snob, and small-minded and ridiculously bourgeois...

But, the outfits. The exquisite enunciation. The way she batters Jerry and Tom down with a single phrase. Magnificent 😁

My favourite moments. I loved her valiant attempt at mucking in.

Also loved the show where the four of them were heading off for a posh night out and Tom had sold his dress suit trousers in order to get the money for Barbara to afford a posh frock. This means he is looking very dapper from the waist up but wearing a pair of jeans below. Margot recognises his chivalry, commands the moment, and puts her arm through Tom's - appearing to take it in her stride. Obviously she does have limits because when they arrive at the venue Margot whispers for Jerry to make sure Tom is seated behind a pillar!

"....and he will insist on calling me Margie."

PangolinPie · 29/09/2022 20:48

She's absolutely the best thing about The Good Life! Barbara and Tom are quite irritating really.

AnnaMagnani · 29/09/2022 20:49

Margo (and Jerry) are the best characters in The Good Life.

The awfulness of Tom is staggering. Drags Barbara into his mid-life crisis, fake self-sufficiency as cadging off the neighbours continually, always putting Barbara down and flirting with Margo.

Tom is the worst.

DorritLittle · 29/09/2022 20:49

Love Margo!

dudsville · 29/09/2022 20:49

PaulineFowlersCardigan · 29/09/2022 20:49

The box set is my ‘go to’ feel good series.
Love Margo, so much that I tried to make her my username when I joined mumsnet, but it was already gone 😩☺️

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 29/09/2022 20:49

I AM Margot Ledbetter when it comes to at home dressing and a stiff martini. She’s an icon and I am proud of my kaftan collection. Come to mine after 7pm on a Sat and I am wafting.

flapjackfairy · 29/09/2022 20:52

that's the last time I play the tart for you Jerry !
She was a great character!
I love the episode where Tom does his back in and only Margo and Jerry help out and Margo looks like she has just come off a fishing trawler.
Classic sit com .

flapjackfairy · 29/09/2022 20:54

@BeggarsMeddle
See you beat me too it ! so funny .

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 29/09/2022 20:56

Some of it is on Amazon Prime, not all seasons though. I love it, have watched it over and over, just makes me feel all comforted.

AchatAVendre · 29/09/2022 21:06

The Good Life was just a little bit before my time but I've watched re-runs and Margot was magnificent! Its barely dated at all, probably because Margot is such a multi-dimensional character. Her posture and confidence are wonderful. Tom was rather irritating though...Barbara must have been a very patient woman.

I love the way Margot then moved on in later years to a manor and then its lodge house. (I know it wasn't really Margot but the character was quite familiar). To The Manor Born was something that I looked forward to as a child, it was a very safe, secure world to sink into before school the next morning. Both programmes had a gentle sort of humour which seems sadly missing on our tv screens now.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 29/09/2022 21:09

Well, thank you very much!

FlindersKeepers · 29/09/2022 21:10

She is my goddess.
The clothes! Home entertaining!

I have a deviled egg platter and many gowns.
I would not say no to a hostess trolley.

She was both inspirational and aspirational to me.

Sadly, I married a Tom.

So I make sure I have regular Margot times ha.

ButnotforLola · 29/09/2022 21:12

I love Margot. My nickname is Margot. I love her fashion - the turbans, the jewellery!
I could watch The Good Life over and over. It's my go to watch when I'm not feeling myself.

Georgeskitchen · 29/09/2022 21:12

Absolutely cracking show and still as funny now as it was in the 70s. I love all the characters but Margo is t

BringMeTea · 29/09/2022 21:12

Margot definitely the stand out character. Watching as an adult her skin is luminous. Agree Tom was a twerp.

EmmaH2022 · 29/09/2022 21:14

I love the way she talks about her various clubs and societies, and Mrs Dooms-Patterson.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/09/2022 21:14

"But Jerry, why is it funny?" is a frequently used catchphrase is this house.

Margot was my nickname for a while ...i like to think i've unclenched a bit these days Grin

She's so glam for just being at home all day. My WFH outfits are shameful in comparison.

Me too!
When I retired I found out that my staff had called me that for years. I like to think it was a compliment.

PlacematsandCoasters · 29/09/2022 21:15

I’ve always adored Margo and she has been my girl crush my entire adult life I think. She’s just such a great character.

Georgeskitchen · 29/09/2022 21:15

*posted too soon. Margo had a stunning figure, a perfect showcase for all those fabulous outfits 😍

EmmaH2022 · 29/09/2022 21:15

Don't laugh but watching To The Manor Born as a child means I still want to live on a cottage on someone's estate. And yy to the gentle humour.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/09/2022 21:16

I've never been to Surbiton but whenever I see it mentioned somewhere I imagine it still being the late 70s there populated with bank managers and stay at home bank managers' wives planning their next dinner party.

Suetwo · 29/09/2022 21:18

Modern comedies are generally funnier (Alan Partride, The Office, the Day Today, etc), but the older shows had charm. That's the one thing modern comedies lack. The Good Life, Dear John, Dad's Army, and so on aren't that funny (you can see the jokes coming a mile away), but they have such charm. They remind me of an older Britain. In some ways this country is better than it was 50 years ago, but there has definitely been a decline in manners and refinement. Yes Margo is a snob, but at least she's snobbish about the right things. Today, people look down on their neighbours for being poor. Margo looks down on them for being coarse and vulgar and ignorant.
