To love Margo in The Good Life?

I'm mean, obviously, she's a crashing snob, and small-minded and ridiculously bourgeois...

But, the outfits. The exquisite enunciation. The way she batters Jerry and Tom down with a single phrase. Magnificent 😁

Agree @Suetwo and @MurderAtTheBeautyPageant

I love old shows, especially The Good Life. I love Margo; I named my cat after her!

Staggering that PK was just 28 at the start of the first series. I remain a huge fan. DH and I watched the whole series back to back a few years ago, and loved it.

Timeless too, we were only in our late twenties at the time!

DisforDarkChocolate · 29/09/2022 21:57

She was by far the nicest of the lot.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/09/2022 21:59

Yes, PK was one of those women who looked much older than her age when she was younger but then maintained that look for decades.

It's a shame that Felicity Kendall (being the pinup I suppose) felt the need to go down the fillers route.

Christmas has not been delivered.

I managed to get a 3.30pm Christmas Eve Waitrose slot one year purely by accident (didn't even mean to open the app, but when I did and saw it there, I couldn't resist), added enough stuff for a fortnight in the knowledge it was coming two days after payday and then rested my laurels for December.

I think it made his month to be able to say I'd arranged for Christmas to be delivered by van - and yes, I made a point of wafting round the house in a floaty frock on Christmas Eve, rather than my usual jeans, trainers, t-shirt and two shopping bags to get whatever was yellow stickered at 9am.

I love Margot.

NessieMcNessface · 29/09/2022 22:08

Thanks for this thread OP! Margot and Jerry made the programme for me. I liked their characters far better than those of Tom and Barbara. Evidently when it started Margo was meant to have a tiny part, almost a voice in the background, but then she did so well that they increased her part substantially. She was the star of it in my opinion.

Kite22 · 29/09/2022 22:09

Yes, so well written and so well acted. Lovely show, and yes, Margo was the star role.

Lemonyfuckit · 29/09/2022 22:13

MandyMotherOfBrian · 29/09/2022 21:09

Well, thank you very much!

This is one of the few impressions I can do! Well thank you verrruh much Jerry!

I love Margot. And I love a martini and aspire to waft around with one whilst wearing something elegant.

Also they took the puss out of her mercilessly but Tom was very irritating and quite sexist and Margot was the one who did always actually crack on and try to help.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 29/09/2022 22:14

Agree, with age I realised how horrible Tom is.

The Christmas episode is the best episode Christmas episode ever made, all the right ingredients imo.

Daisypod · 29/09/2022 22:20

I must know where your all getting your kaftans from! I quite fancy wafting around the house in one.

AnnaMagnani · 29/09/2022 20:49

Margo (and Jerry) are the best characters in The Good Life.

The awfulness of Tom is staggering. Drags Barbara into his mid-life crisis, fake self-sufficiency as cadging off the neighbours continually, always putting Barbara down and flirting with Margo.

Tom is the worst.

Yes, even Richard Briers was team Margo. Tom was just horrible.

RomanMum · 29/09/2022 20:45

I've seen her in Waitrose (natch)

Margot shops in Harrods food hall. She’d think Waitrose is for hoi polloi.

drunkinthebackofthecar · 29/09/2022 22:50

She’s honestly my idol, I love her. Our cats are Margo and Jerry in their honour.

Catinabeanbag · 29/09/2022 22:52

We called the sat nav in our previous car Margot because she was so authoritative and plummy!

ExcellentWomen · 29/09/2022 22:56

I read somewhere that Margo was going to be a minor character initially but she was so brilliant that they had to keep writing more and more for her

JudgeJ · 29/09/2022 22:58

FlindersKeepers · 29/09/2022 21:10

She is my goddess.
The clothes! Home entertaining!

I have a deviled egg platter and many gowns.
I would not say no to a hostess trolley.

She was both inspirational and aspirational to me.

Sadly, I married a Tom.

So I make sure I have regular Margot times ha.

Unfortunately I can't think about 'hostess trolley' without hearing the late Victoria Wood singing to Barry, 'bend me over backwards on a hostess trolley'.

MissDollyMix · 29/09/2022 22:58

Margo was amazing!! I wish they’d just done a spin off with Margo and Jerry and binned off Tom and Barbara all together.

JudgeJ · 29/09/2022 23:03

Floralnomad · 29/09/2022 21:29

Margot and Jerry were the true stars of the show , without them it would have been pretty crap . Tom was an awful character , but Richard Briers seemed to specialise in playing obnoxious people .

According to some people I knew who worked with him on other things it was type casting, he wasn't easy to work with.

Daisypod · 29/09/2022 22:20

I must know where your all getting your kaftans from! I quite fancy wafting around the house in one.

I had a kaftan in the mid 70s, I really loved it.

Needhelp101 · 29/09/2022 23:05

More Good Life thoughts:

Tom was an irritating dick.
Barbara looked like a sexy Muppet.
I need to start saying "Well, thank you VERY much" more often.
I kind of fancy Jerry 😬😂

Yes she’s fabulous! Always found Tom so annoying

EsmaCannonball · 29/09/2022 23:08

She's actually very kind and tolerant and community-minded. Much less self-indulgent than Tom. Can you imagine how she'd handle a parking war or a neighbour who was never in for their deliveries?

I'm re-watching Ever Decreasing Circles at the moment and, if Margo is my suburban spirit animal, Howard and Hilda are absolute couples goals. I'm finding it hilarious that Paul is meant to be the neighbourhood dreamboat (Peter Egan is rather lovely) and yet he dresses like Man at C&A. I'd forgotten that ski-jumpers were a thing in the '80s.

malbecbox · 29/09/2022 23:13

I am very Margot. I'm a raging socialist, a single parent and I work full time. But my goodness her attention to detail, high standards and her knack of getting things done including what you pay for is what you get is admirable. I share those values.
Yuletide Felicitations is a standard greeting over the festive season in my family.
Tom was awful. He didn't care if Barbara was happy with what he decided he just assumed she would follow his ideology. But Barbara was no doormat and her roar rose at times and out Tom in his place.
I'm rather fond of Geraldine too!

5foot5 · 29/09/2022 23:15

Oh yes. One of my favourite sitcoms ever and I just love the Christmas episode. Margot and Jerry are superb. I have them all on DVD.

As a Northerner I always assumed that Surbiton was a made up place name not a real place. Then in my final year at University I had a job interview in Farnborough so I had to go by train. I got the train from Waterloo and en route we stopped at Surbiton. I couldn't believe it, I actually laughed out loud. Oh dear, the other passengers must have thought I wasn't all there.

Needhelp101 · 29/09/2022 23:20

The bit where Barbara comes into the shed breathing fire, and rips apart the cardboard box because she's been skivvying for Margo 😂

Needhelp101 · 29/09/2022 23:21

Oh god, sorry, it's Margot.

I would not be asked in for sherry.
