For wanting to do a Ouija board for a laugh?

Next year DH and I are staying in a castle thought to be the most haunted in Britain. DH says he doesn’t believe in stuff like that, I’m on the fence really but more towards not believing. I think the most likely scenario if ghosts ARE real is that they’re historical residue and not intelligent entities. But even that is a stretch.

So, I’d like to do a ouija board when we’re there for a laugh. The castle is in the middle of nowhere so there isn’t much else to do on an evening other than drink (which I don’t do) and watch Netflix!

DH is point blank refusing saying he isn’t messing about with stuff like that. But he’s a non believer??! So what’s the harm?

If he doesn’t believe in it, am I being unreasonable to ask him to do it?

Ouija boards are very recent in terms of human history. How did these powerful, malevolent forces get in before they were invented?

SwordToFlamethrower · 26/09/2022 13:21

Cracks me up when people say they don't believe, then freak out when you suggest a ouja board.

I was called some nasty names and laughed at when I said I was a witch to a bloke... he said it was total nonsense. I asked him to give me a lock of his hair and he just freaked out and I laughed my arse off.

Do the board. Be sure to invite only good spirits and entities. Be sure to close the board down by stating you are sending them again back in love.

If you don't believe, fine, but play along anyway be respectful always and you never know! Or it won't work and you had a laugh anyway.

Don't believe the films.

I wouldn't have called you names, but if some bloke told me he was a warlock and wanted me to give him a lock of my hair, I'd get the fuck out as fast as possible too.

Ouija cave paintings.

If a stranger told me she was a witch and wanted my hair I'd probably assume she was either pissed off her tits or on day release.

Runes? Bones? Big gap under the front door?

Apparently they come when you call their name so we know they're more like dogs than cats so perhaps pedigree chum?

Gemmanorthdevon · 26/09/2022 13:41

Can I come instead?! A walk in the woods with you sounds awesome! 😂

Pinktoothbrushesarefab · 26/09/2022 14:34

@Miffee What is a ouija board?

They used to be called 'spirit boards'. 'Ouija' is a brand name patented in 1891

I mean what are the component parts that make it dangerous?

None.
It is the intention of the users that can cause problems.

The hysterical replies warning against using them got me thinking.

What 'hysterical' replies are you referring to?

What is the defining feature?

I don't know what you mean by this. Please explain.

Surely if I put a glass on anything with printed letters it is effectively a ouija board?

Correct

RoseyPalm · 26/09/2022 14:47

Someone must have suggested Monopoly.
Biggest question for me is why go to somewhere boring, with nothing to do and probably expensive?

Seriously? That seems rather obtuse. The ones implying you could be grievous danger if you touch a glass stood on a bit of wood.

Pinktoothbrushesarefab · 26/09/2022 14:57

@Miffee "The ones implying you could be grievous danger if you touch a glass stood on a bit of wood."

No-one has said any such thing. Please do not spread misinformation.

@Pinktoothbrushesarefab

Don't! One of my friends went to a dinner party with three other couples...all fit in their 40s. Someone suggested their used a Ouija board....my friend wasn't happy to do it so made excuses and left with her husband. Six months later the three couples who did are all dead. This isn't a made up story but true and my friend won't talk about it. Don't ever muddle with this

SleeplessInEngland · 26/09/2022 15:04

I'd happily do one as a psychology experiment to see how much my mind played tricks on itself.

Miffee · 26/09/2022 15:05

@Pinktoothbrushesarefab

Please don’t do it. I have had to pick up the pieces and do pastoral care and house cleansings for people who dabble with stuff they can’t handle.

4th reply to the thread and the other was 2 pages back. Didn't really have to search. That isn't to mention all the "Just don't." Etc

VickyEadieofThigh · 26/09/2022 15:07

I did a ouija board when I was a teenager. It told me I would have 2 children.

I'm 64 and childfree, so I call bollocks.

What? Of course they have. Who do you think you're kidding? And you're lecturing on spreading misinformation?

They're not always wood, though. The Barbie Ouija board looks to be plastic. Good reviews. One satisfied customer said it was a great addition to her collection.

Pinktoothbrushesarefab · 26/09/2022 15:12

Miffee,

Firstly, a 'ouji' board isn't a 'glass stood on a piece of wood'.

Secondly, why do you consider people who give their personal experiences "hysterical" ?

Thirdly, you haven't explained what you mean by 'defining feature'.

Oops lost a word there in the second paragraph. I am sure that won't be brought up in any response. 😉

Fuck! The spirit was a fake psychic!

ReneBumsWombats · 26/09/2022 15:30

Discovering the Barbie and Ken Ouija boards has sent me down a rabbit hole. You can get spirit board slippers, earrings, coasters and everything. Some of them are bloody brilliant.
