to think that there must be preparations taking place for terrible events that may well happen soon?

Currently behind the scenes- such as :
The government preparing ways to boost numbers in the armed services in the event of war and production of more weapons?
The government making plans to support civilians in the event of a war- preparing instructions for what to do? Water purification? Iodine tablets? Stockpiling of medications? Air-raid buzzers/some shelters etc?

Arrangements for dealing with large scale civil unrest- which looks increasingly likely to me.
How they will deal with the fall-out of a huge financial crash- and I mean huge.

Also that the very wealthy will already be moving theur money out if this country's banks to safer places to protect their wealth when the banks crash?

Honestly If we get nuked there's no real way to mitigate it. Just hope you get killed by the bomb and dont have to eek it out in a "The Road" type scenario indefinitely.

They should maybe issue teens with advice on how to live without TikTok and constant validation from strangers though.

Christ knows what this government is planning. Building a massive bunker for them and their nearest and dearest, and leaving the rest of us to perish?

Steakandquinoa · 23/09/2022 20:29

I stopped following the news about June. Much happier!
Sorry don’t mean to dismiss you, OP.

What have I missed? I don't want to Google (my searches show up on ds device) - who is threatening to nuke us pls?

NeelyOHara1 · 23/09/2022 20:30

I hear your hope. I also like to think that it's not all moustache twirling villains in charge.

Really? Just look at the BBC!

They don't need to build a new one. There is already loads left over form WWII. Including and absolutely huge one under Kingsford Country Park. Privately owned now but I imagine the government could buy it back if needed. There's lots of other bunkers like this all over the country.

VikingVolva · 23/09/2022 20:35

They're planning to increase the size of the Armed Forces because of a revanchist Russia, and the need for NATO really to defend all its members

Production of weapons - a major export - probably doesn't add to the sum of human happiness (no matter how careful your end user certification procedures). But it's profitable, and people tend to want a burgeoning economy and not look too closely at the goods involved.

Prep for civilians? - Prob non-existent

Large scale civil unrest - depends on how resolute the government is. There have been systems in place since the 1980s, and I expect they'd be wheeled out again

Financial crash? Who knows?

But some people would survive and would need help and the government must be preparing for that surely?
Also, it would take time to reach the point of use of a nuclear weapon and, at least the initial use would be likely to be tactical rather than blanket use so not the whole country would be affected. I read that the most likely place Putin would use a tactical nuclear weapon would be over the North Sea between UK and Norway/Denmark/Netherlands or the Atlantic between Ireland/South-West England/France/Spain/Portugal.

Alright - I did explain why I didn't want to Google but whatever.
BBC gives me - tax cut gamble, pound falling, Hillary mantel RIP, Ukraine forced 'voting', strictly. Nothing nuke related. I mean I assume it's Russia and I'm sure I'll find out at some point. Sorry for asking on a thread made about it (whatever it is)

Norriscolesbag · 23/09/2022 20:38

Oh god, not this again. We were all going to get nuked in February.

last week none of this fear was in the news. Now it’s back.

just enjoy life and turn the tv/internet off.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 23/09/2022 20:38

Ok - thanks OP, Putin again.

SuzySangfroid · 23/09/2022 20:39

Tbh, I don't think the current or recent government gives enough of a fuck to prepare for preventing general tragedy. I imagine they have prepared for their own personal safety though

FindingMeno · 23/09/2022 20:40

Honestly do you think this government gives a flying shit?

Julia234 · 23/09/2022 20:40

Bloody ell, I’ll take my chances with ‘the road’ and grow some onions or something. What’s the alternative, nothing?!

… better go and look for some iodine tablets.

MintJulia · 23/09/2022 20:45

No one is going to nuke us. OP. Putin is a big-mouthed arrogant fool but there is sufficient self-preservation instinct in any armed force to avoid pressing the button.

Your time would be better spent working out how to pay this winter's leccy bill.

I agree- I stopped watching it but have started again in recent weeks and am increasingly worried, particularly now we have Truss and Karteng who are both bombastic, pompous, fools likely to cause further international and national upset and unrest with their actions - as we have seen already.

I am so worried and just think there must be stuff happening that we don't know about to try to mitigate the impact of some of these increasingly likely events.

The civil unrest one worries me because I actually feel sympathetic towards the idea and I am so not a person to feel like that, so if I do feel like that it makes me wonder how many others seriously are planning it right now. I think we could see serious and mass civil unrest in our cities - London as a centre but also cities across the country particularly in the north-west, midlands and north-east where poverty is very significant and widespread now and feelings against the establishment are running high. I think we don't have the resources to deal with it now.

We are heading for a huge financial crash. What should we be doing to protect any money we do have saved? If the government goes bankrupt and banks crash, what is the point of FSCS (or whatever it is called) protection of up to £85,000 of savings per bank per customer- they won't be able to pay it if they are all bust.

I don’t think the kind of war that is probable/possible will require extra soldiers TBH.

Goldenbear · 23/09/2022 20:58

How do you know civil unrest is going to happen? When did the 'news' become about predictions

Goldenbear · 23/09/2022 21:00

Didn't the news used to be about what 'has' happened not what 'might'.

BasilParsley · 23/09/2022 21:03

We're doomed Captain Mainwaring! Seriously @LuluBlakey1 try not to think about it all too hard and just take each day as it happens. If there are all the hidden agendas that you imply, then we won't know about them, the effects will just happen and we will be generally powerless to stop them when they do.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/09/2022 21:04

Ha ha ha😂😂😂😂

Tjis government preparing for anything?

That’s hilarious. Too far up their own arses and buttering each other up.

Preparation😂

TBF there has been unrest in Leicester and Birmingham for several days now. The mood in the country isn’t exactly settled.

Feelingconfused2020 · 23/09/2022 21:04

The way I see it we as the public can't prevent nuclear war so I'm not going to watch the news and scare myself silly about it. Things I can do something about like striking and protesting I'm all for but worrying about evil dictators nuking us is wasted energy.
