to think that there must be preparations taking place for terrible events that may well happen soon?

Currently behind the scenes- such as :
The government preparing ways to boost numbers in the armed services in the event of war and production of more weapons?
The government making plans to support civilians in the event of a war- preparing instructions for what to do? Water purification? Iodine tablets? Stockpiling of medications? Air-raid buzzers/some shelters etc?

Arrangements for dealing with large scale civil unrest- which looks increasingly likely to me.
How they will deal with the fall-out of a huge financial crash- and I mean huge.

Also that the very wealthy will already be moving theur money out if this country's banks to safer places to protect their wealth when the banks crash?

I think I preferred it when there was no news apart from updates from a queue. I thought I was missing out on actual news at the time, nah, bring back the queue I say.

I think OP just really wants a riot

Not at all but I think we'll have them.

This is nothing more than being the 'Strongman' that many Russians respect. His land forces have been humilated. The fearsome Russian Bear has been shown to be toothless, with outdated tactics, equipment and military dogma. It's not even clear if his nuclear arsenal is in a functioning condition. Any attack on a NATO nation would go extremely badly for Russia. He knows this. Gobshitery is all he has.

I don’t want to survive if we’re naked tbh. What sort of life is it living in a bunker for the next few decades, because it would be years before you could actually come out of the bunkers due to nuclear fallout. It would be a miserable existence.

Did you mean 'naked' or 'nuked' ? 😁

I don’t fancy living for years in a bunker naked either.

Not in winter anyway Grin

Sparklythings1 · 23/09/2022 21:58

The whole thing just makes me so sad. We spend all this money on these nuclear weapons that can do all these ridiculous things, just to fight and kill other humans/animals/life. It’s not until it’s got to someone like Putin who’s actually mad enough to maybe do it that we’ve realised they’re so pointless. He could press it and we just need to do it back to them. If this was taken down to playground level you would actually laugh at the situation, he threw a stone at me so I’m throwing one back because I said I would. I’m not saying we shouldn’t, obviously we would need to, but the whole thing would in theory just be such a huge waste of every day people’s lives who want nothing to do with any of this ☹️

I am prone to it but can usually control it. This time, I don't think it's me though.

@LuluBlakey1 Do you have someone you can talk to about the fact you are unable to control your feelings in this instance? If so, I suggest you call them to make an appointment. If not, I suggest you get in touch with your GP who should be able to refer you to someone who will help you talk through your feelings and rationalise them.

The suspected cold war target list (used in civil defense exercises and planning) was much more than "a few strategic targets"

Marmite17 · 23/09/2022 22:10

I think that there is a real threat of a missile being launched if the, most likely fake, referendum doesn't go Putin's way. Ie if it is challenged. I would doubt though that it would be fired at any significant target. Think it could be used as a show of strength.

darisdet · 23/09/2022 22:10

The retaliation would be instantaneous as I'm sure he's well aware. I'm not particularly worried.

Itsallaboutyou666 · 23/09/2022 22:11

I don't want to survive any nuke attack on uk and I hope no one I love or care for survives either. It already feels like the world is turning into a dystopian nightmare. All my favorite films were dystopian . It feels like I'm almost living in my own "children of men". Now I'm going to have to take a diazapam 😂

Have you read On the Beach? Sorry! I did like that one.

stillherenow · 23/09/2022 22:16

Firstly, I don't think there will be civil unrest. I work in a job advising people on low incomes / debt and I don't see anger, I see hopelessness yes, but also resilience .

Secondly, Putin won't be around long

op, until recently I had anxiety (now on ADs) and I could have written this. It's an understandable anxiety but that is what it is. Try and step away from reading the news.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/09/2022 22:16

The most important thing to Putin is Russia. If he presses the button then another one is pressed too, in his direction. Would he really be mad enough to take his beloved Russia down?

JamesBondOO7 · 23/09/2022 22:20

Don't worry, the gov is always prepared to "ramp up" what ever it requires and "what ever it takes"!

The cat came out of the bag re this Conravirus thing and all the gov is prpeared for is how to go into bunkers

berksandbeyond · 23/09/2022 22:20

I am seeing my GP monthly thank you and my medication for depression is being carefully monitored. I don't think I am the only person worrying about these issues and wondering if the government are doing anything to prepare to help the country in such possibilities. I have 3 small DC and worry about them and their lives. It feels like the UK is just blundering from mistake to mistake by a chaotic government who seem to make every bad choice possible in terms of actually helping the majority.

Yes I agree there are probably lots of plans and operations being put in place at the moment. This winter will be very difficult for alot of people.

On the other side of the world I suspect there are senior Russian military people and members of the Dumas getting very concerned at Putin’s nuclear willy waving. I’d be taking bets that the more he escalates, the more in danger Putin will be with his own people. He’s isolating himself and Russia and that doesn’t tend to end well.

or a misunderstanding most likely and then MAD
Putin has everyhting to lose if he loses in the Ukraine and he will as rightly so most Russian troops are against this invasion.

Ukraine needs to regin in their extreme lot and every country has some of them

Bretonbear · 23/09/2022 22:23

Can we just get back to arguing about Phil and Holly queue jumping...

Marmite17 · 23/09/2022 22:24

In some ways I think accepting a fake referendum result might be a resolution to the war. Just give him the land. But. It is wrong.

Ohtsd · 23/09/2022 22:24

There is a thread that something is going to happen tomorrow.

Marmite17 · 23/09/2022 22:25

www.robedwards.com/2014/06/revealed-the-106-cold-war-nuclear-targets-across-the-uk.html

And yet we're not in the Cold War, the world has changed and there's a lot of difference between "Russia attempting to specifically wipe out the UK" and "Russia being pissed off and flailing at a lot of targets, the UK being one of them".

Could Putin go all in absolutely on all or nothing fuck you all I'm taking the world out with me nuclear war? Yes absolutely. But it's far more likely if he did press that button that he would go for a much smaller amount of key targets "to show he was serious" (which would be really really stupid because suddenly the entire world really would be moving against him but is a lot more likely).
