to think that there must be preparations taking place for terrible events that may well happen soon?

Currently behind the scenes- such as :
The government preparing ways to boost numbers in the armed services in the event of war and production of more weapons?
The government making plans to support civilians in the event of a war- preparing instructions for what to do? Water purification? Iodine tablets? Stockpiling of medications? Air-raid buzzers/some shelters etc?

Arrangements for dealing with large scale civil unrest- which looks increasingly likely to me.
How they will deal with the fall-out of a huge financial crash- and I mean huge.

Also that the very wealthy will already be moving theur money out if this country's banks to safer places to protect their wealth when the banks crash?

The only real danger to people in this country is the incompetence of the present government.

Ds2 applied to rejoin the army 18 months ago. Due to various fuckups his life is still on hold while they process the application. Last message was requesting test results they have already received bringing the total number of medical history requests so far to 6.
That was a month ago.

Don't worry about mobilising people for war.

Be more concerned about people being fucked off with being cold hungry and in rags getting angry.

I am just as worried about civil unrest. I can see exactly how people will come to that. It frightens me.

Is this another civil unrest thread in disguise, there are a few on here that want it

Lesserspotteddogfish · 23/09/2022 21:41

I doubt it. There has been no preparation for the worsening performance of the NHS, for brexit or anything else. I imagine bugger all is being done in preparation for any war, as usual.

Livelovebehappy · 23/09/2022 21:42

I don’t want to survive if we’re naked tbh. What sort of life is it living in a bunker for the next few decades, because it would be years before you could actually come out of the bunkers due to nuclear fallout. It would be a miserable existence.

TrueNorthernBird · 23/09/2022 21:43

I'm adding a bottle of Vodka to the shopping list every week and I don't even drink the stuff.

Figure I can:

  1. Drink it
  2. Trade it with the invading Russians
  3. Pour it on wounds
  4. Drink it some more
  5. Use it as fuel
  6. Throw it in the face of Zombies

I'm all good with the impending DOOM.

RJnomore1 · 23/09/2022 21:43

Oh ffs can we not just dig the Queen up and bury her again to stop this nonsense?

Ohtsd · 23/09/2022 21:45

I think OP just really wants a riot

Luxurysleuth007 · 23/09/2022 21:45

I have wondered if the Pounds sudden drop on the back of today’s announcement had something to do with the markets being concerned about our prospects ‘long term’. I hope that there is something happening behind the scenes in anticipation of something happening here. What that something could be is anyones guess.

XenoBitch · 23/09/2022 21:46

Chicken Licken, or a written panic attack.

Avoid the news and live your life.

crochetmonkey74 · 23/09/2022 21:46

I'm confused. Has something new happened? My news feed hasn't got anything ?

I don’t fancy living for years in a bunker naked either.

Yes. Op, are you going to join in the riot and maybe do some looting if the opportunity presents itself, or cheer from the sidelines?

justasking111 · 23/09/2022 21:47

If the OP thinks this is our first nuclear threat where was she in history lessons 🙄

BasilParsley · 23/09/2022 21:48

LuluBlakey1 · 23/09/2022 21:36

No I'm not. They are perfectly valid questions that are really worrying me. I am certainly not 'deliberately scaremongering'.

With respect @LuluBlakey1 I think you are catastrophising.... I wonder if you have similar thoughts and worries over other matters?

Devilishpyjamas · 23/09/2022 21:50

This govt won’t have prepared for anything. Have you seen who’s in charge? However, I think civil
unrest is more likely to arise because of the policies of our govt rather than nuclear war.

Munchyseeds2 · 23/09/2022 21:50

I would like to think there is planning in the background but I very much doubt it
The general population would just be left to get on with it
If the worst happens here's hoping I'm one of the first to go!

Motorcycleemptyness · 23/09/2022 21:51

There was no competent planning for brexit, or any pandemic. If there is a nuclear war we are absolutely fucked.

swg1 · 23/09/2022 21:51

People have weird concepts over nuclear war. If it happens, it's vanishingly unlikely to wipe the whole island out. It'll be a few strategically chosen targets and the rest of us will have to live through it, so I do wonder how far these people planning to drive towards the explosion are planning to drive. It's a minimum 6 hours from here to London and that's without accounting for all the traffic caused by other people assumedly trying to drive towards the explosion.

So sorry, guys, but the majority of you aren't going to get the quick flash death you seem to be planning for (while accusing other people of panicking). Unless you're near a key strategic point you might have to plan for living.

MultiTulip · 23/09/2022 21:51

This isn’t a government for the people, it’s government for the very wealthy. They aren’t preparing for anything that would only affect normal people because they give no shits. They’ll have a plan to protect their own wealth. If you’re lucky you’ll live in an area with a non Tory council which may well be doing its best to prepare for bad stuff happening, but their resources have been so stripped that it will be limited.

Flapjacker48 · 23/09/2022 21:53

All civil defense relating to nuclear weapons was dismantled post 1991. There is no way to "warn" the country in the vanishingly unlikely event nuclear strike was incoming on the UK. Essentially the duty officer at fylingdales would have maybe 15 minutes to make a few calls to key people/locations before he is vaporised as that would be a number one target. The main aim would be to get our nuclear weapons away before the infrastructure to achieve this was destroyed.

There are no "nuclear bunkers" beyond the one under the MoD, maybe one or two others, but nothing like the regional network of bunkers of the cold war anyway.

Just to note that the main aim of British cold war civil defense planning was to ensure "continuity of government" not to protect the general population (which was virtually impossible on the island the size of GB)

Very few people would actually drive towards the explosion, whatever they tell themselves now. The survival instinct is stronger than that.

notsosoftanymore · 23/09/2022 21:54

I was wondering about this only yesterday. In the 1980s when American bombers were stationed at Greenham Common and the Cold War was still on, we were all terrified of being nuked and there were instructions about what you should do. Blank out your windows and hide under the table I think, plus stockpile food and water. There were films, eg. the Day After and lots of tracks, eg www.stereogum.com/1978060/38-essential-80s-songs-about-nuclear-anxiety/lists/ultimate-playlist/

So I was actually thinking last night of writing to my local councillors and my MP asking what the plans were, if any (not much hope of those under this lot in government).

I did read earlier this year that the French were buying iodine tablets in relatively large quantities - protects your thyroid gland.

Posterhause · 23/09/2022 21:54

No chance of Nuclear war, it's just Putin running his deranged mouth. He can't push the button on his own.

Russia & Ukraine are now like two scared kids fighting in a playground, willing a teacher to come and break it up. Pretty sure it will end with Russia getting a small region of Ukraine that has always been pro Russia anyway, and claiming a victory, whilst Ukraine can claim they drove the enemy out.

I am prone to it but can usually control it. This time, I don't think it's me though.
