to think that there must be preparations taking place for terrible events that may well happen soon?

Currently behind the scenes- such as :
The government preparing ways to boost numbers in the armed services in the event of war and production of more weapons?
The government making plans to support civilians in the event of a war- preparing instructions for what to do? Water purification? Iodine tablets? Stockpiling of medications? Air-raid buzzers/some shelters etc?

Arrangements for dealing with large scale civil unrest- which looks increasingly likely to me.
How they will deal with the fall-out of a huge financial crash- and I mean huge.

Also that the very wealthy will already be moving theur money out if this country's banks to safer places to protect their wealth when the banks crash?

Exactly

These bloody threads shouldn’t be allowed. I’m 35 weeks pregnant with insomnia: just came on MN for some light entertainment and this post
was in ‘active’.

Thanks, OP. I really needed this right now. 🙄

@LuluBlakey1 "What should we be doing to protect any money we do have saved?"

Learn how to use bitcoin. Not "invest" in bitcoin, but learn how to use it.

TarasHarp55 · 24/09/2022 02:56

Preparations for terrible events? What would be the point. The government should be busying themselves with trying to make peace with Russia (if that's possible) instead of antagonising. We need diplomacy and peace talks not an acceptance we're all going to be bombed. I'd hate to see preparations for war, surely everyone would. All the preparations in the world wouldn't save you.

sunglassesonthetable · 24/09/2022 06:13

TBF there has been unrest in Leicester and Birmingham for several days now. The mood in the country isn’t exactly settled.

The "mood" of the country?? You What?

Something really specific happening in the Midlands. Not civil unrest. 🙄

What was the " mood " of the country when it was glued to the tv last week? Hardly civil unrest whilst clutching the remote control.

God alive what nonsense.

For the record there has always been planning for what happens if a 'major event' occurs. It's not a new thing.

Posterhause · 24/09/2022 06:25

Quite frankly , OP, people like you are why other people are having to delete social media and general forums.

Just a scaremongering thread that may make you feel better by getting your anxieties out, but you have upset many others.

'Threats' have always been out there in the world; be it North Korea, China, ISIS, even the I.R.A back in the day.

We have lived through worse social snd economic times in this country as well.

One of the issues we have now though is news outlets competing for website hits to justify funding or advertising revenue, so you get OTT shocking 'takes' from even the most reputable sources.

I really do think more and more people are turning away from the news now , and from social media . It just fuels anxiety, stress and depression with a warped version of reality.

How do you get started? What does one have to learn?

On a related note, our school is practicing lockdown. The scenarios they gave had me a bit Hmm. One was what to do if a helicopter lands on their sports field. Perviously they gave much less alarming scenarios. Why on earth would a helicopter land on the school grounds? This is a run of the mill state school BTW.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 06:55

They should maybe issue teens with advice on how to live without TikTok and constant validation from strangers though.

I can actually foresee reels on how to die stylishly!

LittleHanna · 24/09/2022 06:56

GladAllOver · 23/09/2022 21:37

The only real danger to people in this country is the incompetence of the present government.

So true.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 06:56

But some people would survive and would need help and the government must be preparing for that surely?

This government?

liveforsummer · 24/09/2022 06:57

Why on earth would a helicopter land on the school grounds?

Air ambulance?

rockyg · 24/09/2022 06:59

I do expect some civil unrest & economic wise probably in for some serious shit.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/09/2022 06:59

Bunnyfuller · 24/09/2022 00:28

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat ok, now I’m listening. WINE SHORTAGE WTF. WHEN, HOW, WHO LET THIS HAPPEN

Weekend plans changed to panic buy booze to fill the garage.

Drought apparently.

I'm off planting trees to save the next grape harvest.

Please join me, all and one, so we can secure a steady wine supply in the future.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:01

Those on here who are wealthy and have large savings/investments - are you doing anything to try to protect them?

We certainly don't need people panicking & pulling money out of banks. Plus the truly wealthy will have it offshore.

Not completely unfeasible as an emergency landing place but not sure lockdown would be needed!

Air ambulance that needed somewhere to land to deal with nearby RTA - no lockdown needed, probably just keep kids away from it though.

Chinook landing due to technical difficulties - let kids out to have a look assuming the pilot is happy (which happened once in a field near me, though not a school field. The pilot and crew were great at letting the kids get on and showing them around)

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:04

I have wondered if the Pounds sudden drop on the back of today’s announcement had something to do with the markets being concerned about our prospects ‘long term’.

Well yes because the markets don't have much confidence. Liz's plan is a huge gamble.

Because that approach has worked out really well in the last. Particularly in the late 1930's....

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:10

So sorry, guys, but the majority of you aren't going to get the quick flash death you seem to be planning for (while accusing other people of panicking).

Don't most people live in cities though?

liveforsummer · 24/09/2022 07:11

On a thread recently people gave examples of when schools used their lockdowns. Thing like a fox in the playground, a scuffle between parents, a teen running from police cutting through the playground. A helicopter landing would certainly trigger one in these settings, and yes it would be important that dc were kept inside and in one place which I guess is pretty much what a lockdown entails.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:14

But it's far more likely if he did press that button that he would go for a much smaller amount of key targets "to show he was serious" (which would be really really stupid because suddenly the entire world really would be moving against him but is a lot more likely).

Disagree, he would go big.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:16

You have to stay in your bunker for around 2 days to 2 weeks, depending on the wind and your proximity to the blast. Then it's safe to come out.

Safe? but it would be lawless & there might be zombies!

Willbe2under2 · 24/09/2022 07:17

Thanks @liveforsummer I was thinking 'lockdown' to mean stay inside, lock the classrooms, get under the desks, type scenario, like in the States, not... business as usual but you can't go out to play. Do they really need drills for that sort of scenario?

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:20

I always wonder why powerful /mega wealthy people would want to get into bunkers, however luxurious they might be, given that if the world as they knew it had gone, there'd be nothing left when they got out.

their bunkers are also for uprising of the poor, not just armageddon. I think some can stay there for years, they probably all have a whatsapp group where they plan the new world.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:24

@LittleHanna school lockdowns have been in the planning stages for years. I think they came about for "lone wolf" scenarios

People were apparently hiding under desks in some of the examples given although other people reported it just to be staying at desks with blinds down. I work in a school but the only drills we do are fire ones so don't have any personal experience- just what I've read but some seemed ridiculous reasons.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:26

it's not a leg requirement though
