to think that there must be preparations taking place for terrible events that may well happen soon?

Currently behind the scenes- such as :
The government preparing ways to boost numbers in the armed services in the event of war and production of more weapons?
The government making plans to support civilians in the event of a war- preparing instructions for what to do? Water purification? Iodine tablets? Stockpiling of medications? Air-raid buzzers/some shelters etc?

Arrangements for dealing with large scale civil unrest- which looks increasingly likely to me.
How they will deal with the fall-out of a huge financial crash- and I mean huge.

Also that the very wealthy will already be moving theur money out if this country's banks to safer places to protect their wealth when the banks crash?

legal!

Apparently there is also a wine shortage looming.

is anyone prepared for that?

Yes, we’ve enough stored to last a couple of years, so no concern there.

LittleHanna · 24/09/2022 07:40

Our school lockdown drill involved hiding under desks. Ds loved it. I just couldn't think of a reason a helicopter might land at school but RTA is the most likely.

With Putin's rhetoric though, my first thought was they are prepping the kids for a war scenario.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:01

Those on here who are wealthy and have large savings/investments - are you doing anything to try to protect them?

We certainly don't need people panicking & pulling money out of banks. Plus the truly wealthy will have it offshore.

Why would it be held offshore? Offshore just means abroad, which doesn’t really get you any benefit when the UK has no wealth tax.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:47

@ImNotGreta I don't understand. Are you saying the 1% don't hide money offshore?

Not in general, no, what would be the point?

We’re far from super-rich, but have a fair few million in investments, and as with our friends in similar circumstances we just hold most of it in the UK.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:58

But your not the 1% are you? 😆

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:58

I said truly wealthy...

All civil defense relating to nuclear weapons was dismantled post 1991. There is no way to "warn" the country in the vanishingly unlikely event nuclear strike was incoming on the UK. Essentially the duty officer at fylingdales would have maybe 15 minutes to make a few calls to key people/locations before he is vaporised as that would be a number one target. The main aim would be to get our nuclear weapons away before the infrastructure to achieve this was destroyed.

There are no "nuclear bunkers" beyond the one under the MoD, maybe one or two others, but nothing like the regional network of bunkers of the cold war anyway.

Just to note that the main aim of British cold war civil defense planning was to ensure "continuity of government" not to protect the general population (which was virtually impossible on the island the size of GB)

Do you work at RAF Fylingdales @Flapjacker48 ?
really interesting would you tell us more?

MarmadukeSpillageEsquire · 23/09/2022 22:43

Bet Holly & Phil have got a lovely bunker.

They’ll have to single handedly repopulate the world.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 07:58

But your not the 1% are you? 😆

Well yes, quite a way up in the 1% in the UK. Do you understand where the 1% starts?

Preparations for terrible events? What would be the point. The government should be busying themselves with trying to make peace with Russia (if that's possible) instead of antagonising. We need diplomacy and peace talks not an acceptance we're all going to be bombed. I'd hate to see preparations for war, surely everyone would. All the preparations in the world wouldn't save you.

Thats easy to solve. Putin gets the fuck out of Ukraine, remains inside his borders and stops killing British citizens in cities like Salisbury.

Job done.

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/09/2022 08:40

Why on earth would a helicopter land on the school grounds?

Santa arriving to visit the military kids.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 08:47

@ImNotGreta

I'm talking about the truly wealthy, the global elite. The people who do use offshore trusts to hide money & influence. What don't you understand?

rockyg · 24/09/2022 08:48

You yourself said you were not super rich so why are you arguing that you are?

rockyg · 24/09/2022 08:52

My parents have a few million if you add property, pensions, investments etc which I assume would put them in the U.K. 1%. It doesn't mean they are anything close to Jeff & Lauren 😆

ShirtingForkBalls · 24/09/2022 09:25

WagathaChristieMystery · 23/09/2022 20:26

Christ knows what this government is planning. Building a massive bunker for them and their nearest and dearest, and leaving the rest of us to perish?

Oh deffo.

andtheweedonkey · 24/09/2022 09:28

Who in their right mind would join the armed services at the mo?

Putin's a knob with a nuke...having extra army etc won't stop him being a knob.

sunglassesonthetable · 24/09/2022 09:35

Why on earth would a helicopter land on the school grounds?

A helicopter once landed in the park in front of my house. Someone had badly broken their legs.

Sixtyfourteen · 24/09/2022 10:14

I think I read that there's a bunker under the Ministry of Defence? Certainly under a government building in central London.
Frankly, the thought of Liz Truss and similar people coming out of that bunker and seeing the world they're decided to keep for themselves is the one positive in this hellish situation. We seriously are better off not surviving.

I don’t understand why you think anyone needs to “hide” money when we have no wealth tax in the UK, or why you are so dishonestly shifting the goalposts about who you mean when you are questioned.

rockyg · 24/09/2022 11:06

@ImNotGreta what are you missing?

I'm not shifting any goalposts

I literally replied to a post about large savings/investments & said Plus the truly wealthy will have it offshore.

I'm not sure why you have a problem with that point. The super rich/global elite/truly wealthy/whatever term you prefer but I thought it was very clear who the truly wealthy are do make use of offshore accounts. You can disagree if you want...

rockyg · 24/09/2022 11:11

And I have no idea why when I said truly wealthy you assumed I was talking only about the U.K?

rockyg · 24/09/2022 11:17

It's really odd that you have interpreted my post as an attack on you & your finances 😆. Honestly do you normally centre yourself like this in threads? No one cares! The back & forth is boring me, and I'm sure it's killed the thread, well done 👏🏻.

Of course you are, you shifted from talking about “the 1%”, and then shifted it to mean only people with a great many millions in investments.

You are either being dishonest now or genuinely think that the average member of the 1% has millions of pounds in investments. They don’t.

I think that as a household we are at about the 0.1% level, so we’ll into the top 1%, and exactly the sort of people that you are talking about.
