Tradesperson inviting people into my home

1000 replies

IvyPlant · 17/09/2022 17:03

Currently got a tradesperson in to do a job. They quoted me a day rate of 8 days work (which I think will take less time than that, but they're the expert...)

Anyway, that's not my AIBU. I checked my security footage this week and noticed a woman popped round to my house when I was out and tradesperson was working alone in my house. I can only see her walk past my front door to the back garden gate, she knocks and then the feed ends. She's seen leaving 4 hours later. The next day, same thing, except 3 hours.

At present the tradesperson gets here for about 8am and has already stopped working by 3pm. So that's 7 hours of work, fair enough, but 4 (and 3) of them an unknown woman here is (it's not his wife, I did a little social media digging and it's not her).

AIBU if I question him about it next week? He still has 4 days left to finish the job next week and I don't l like the fact there's an unknown and univited person in my house when I'm not there, plus, how much work can he really be doing if his "mate" is there for 4 hours.

At this stage, I think I would say to him
"Hey Elec, I have a query, Does your approximate 8 days, take into account lost time for when your girlfriend is round? Because 3 to 4 hours lost each time she sneeks in seems a royal piss take to me"... tilts head, raises eyebrow. Waits with calm curiosity for his reply as the blood drains from his face...
If he feignes incomprehension, ask would he like to see the vids ?....

Omg I’m so excited <squeeaaal> I feel like I’m part way through a really gripping drama series on TV!

Can’t wait for tonights episode 😁

Catastrophejane · 21/09/2022 16:24

he’s shagging her.

id wait until he was finished ( so to speak) and presents you with the bill.

you then deduct the ‘shagging hours’ from the bill.

he won’t complain 😉

I just hope he isn’t a good tradesman.

Around here good tradesmen are so thin on the ground, I’d probably be offering to cook for the couple and go out for the evening to leave them to it - if I meant I had a good tradesmen doing the job!

Catastrophejane · 21/09/2022 16:31

@Doingprettywellthanks 😂😂😂 this is very true!

Same here. I've been trying for 18 months to find a kitchen fitter interested in my small, eccentric , 100-year-old kitchen to no avail. Hell he could shag ME if that would get the renovations done.

Flyinggeesei234 · 21/09/2022 16:52

@KosherDill that made me laugh! Brilliant.

I totally get your softly softly approach OP.

millymog11 · 21/09/2022 17:10

Manuscript invoice adjustment by you:

"8 days working as your sparky @ £x per day = £y"

"Minus Z days for your work on your spark with your bit on the side and £W for use of my personal facilities for that purpose. You are welcome"

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/09/2022 17:18

I asked before @IvyPlant where did you find him

did you check refs or was he word of mouth

don’t answer that now as know you are having a day with master Ivy as his birthday

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/09/2022 17:32

I think you are remaining calmer than I would. I suppose the outbuilding helps as in, he’s not conducting his activities inside your home.

I look forward to the outcome. This is why I’m so wary of letting tradespeople into my house when I’m out.

Fingeronthebutton · 21/09/2022 17:51

PDAmomma
I think your going to be sorely disappointed.

MRSRUDEBOX · 21/09/2022 17:57

Some electric jobs are a lot easier with two people. (pulling new wires etc)
She may need cushion/blanket for kneeing on the floor, outbuildings may be dirty.
Your cushions were moved from the window to let more light in.
She parked over the road as she is not legally declared & you are a ex copper.
He tried to block her from view of camera for the same reason.
She is his daughter/sister....
😂
or not.

That must be it.
I was watching on a building site electricians pulling a big fat electrical cable through an underground conduit. To coordinate the pushing and pulling they were making some repetitive weird noises.
Good to know in case you have neighbours enquiring about unorthodox noises coming from the outhouse in daytime.

Stringing everyone along? I am many things, but I can't speed up time.

I'm getting tired of defending my choices.

Tomorrow I won't be posting updates at all. It's my little boy's birthday. I suppose I planned his birth x years ago because I knew one day it would come in handy as an excuse to keep stringing along strangers online.

For what it's worth, I am verbose by nature. If you think I'm stringing you along, stop reading.

IvyPlant, you rock !

purplehair1 · 21/09/2022 18:41

Can we get updates? (Reaches for popcorn)

LetMeSpeak · 21/09/2022 18:42

If she’s not stolen anything then it’s not a crime.

The OP said yesterday she won’t be updating today as it’s her child’s birthday.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 21/09/2022 19:17

It's one of the downsides to buying blindly online. I'll give that camera another try tomorrow and if the same thing happens, I'll return for a refund. Definitely won't be recommending that piece of equipment, that's for sure!

That would be an excellent and very popular Mumsnet Recommends.

BlackCountryWench2 · 21/09/2022 19:42

I’m totally agog for tomorrow’s gripping instalment!

Snackdealer · 21/09/2022 19:49

Omg this is the best thread and I have only read your posts OP. Good luck for tomorrow

ThatMiddleClassFood · 21/09/2022 19:49

Shamelessly place marking for tomorrows installment

Solonge · 21/09/2022 19:52

next time you see her arriving....tell your boss you feel terrible and need to go home.... I would be very unhappy knowing someone is at my house for that long....without knowing why.
