To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

Plus literally means 'plus' as in 'extra' - so above the norm.

Well that's where I was going wrong. I just thought it meant 'plus' as in 'extra' as in 'big'

hellosunshineagainx · 22/08/2022 01:10

I think plus sized isn't about health or weight as such its just means it's not straight size. Straight size being you can shop the brand normal range/shop on the usual high street. All brands seem to go to a 16 these days so probably wouldn't say it is plus sized.

Also someone saying you can't weigh 16 stone and be an 18 is wrong Im the proof. Im 16 stone and a size 16 in dresses and 18 in bottoms. Its the heaviest I have been since having a baby, pnd and gallbladder removal. I eat too much.

At 14 stone I was a 14 and at my usual (ie the weight I have been most my life) 12 stone I was a size 10-12 in dresses and 14 in bottoms.

No matter my size most of my weight is on my hips and bottom so can wear smaller size in dresses

I would class myself as plus sized now as I wear 18s in bottoms and that isn't a size everywhere carries in their 'normal range'

Yes that doesn't ring true to me either. I weighed 12 stone as a Size 14, so 16 stone for an 18 doesn't seem that off to me?

Monday55 · 22/08/2022 01:12

Size 18 is plus size. The way things are going though it's going to be a medium size in about 10years time.

TeapotTitties · 22/08/2022 01:12

You have to remember as well that the style makes a difference.

If there are no zips or buttons, most of us can buy a size below.

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 22/08/2022 01:14

Average weight and over/underweight are factual and can be measured.

'Normal' and 'plus size' are objective terms that mean different things to different people.

hellosunshineagainx · 22/08/2022 01:21

Reading some of the comments here has made me feel really sad. I haven't been obese my whole like just since I had my son, pnd and digestive issues. I can't believe this is how people see me, I'm still a human being its not a personal failure or disgusting to have put in weight in hard times. Our relationships with food are complicated and the modern lifestyle isn't helpful

Hilarious. I’m 5’10 and was an 18 until about a year ago. Nothing unhealthy about what I was doing it was actually meds from doctors. Actually sitting here acting like the health police when you know nothing about others lives. 16 has been ‘average’ womens size for about 5 years. Catch up.

Size 16 being average and normal is NOT a good thing regardless of how body positive you are. Simply because this has massive implications for health. We were aware of this 5 years ago too.

Minimising this reality is just more of fantasy land destruction of the truth because it suits what people want to belief.

However it doesn't actually help them.

Yes size 18 is plus size.

mackthepony · 22/08/2022 01:22

Just because it's average doesn't mean it's healthy.

mamabear715 · 22/08/2022 01:23

Yep, I feel quite offended, being a HUGE size 18.
Didn't realise I was quite so ugly & offensive..

See you how, exactly??

I think you're projecting

Just because it's average doesn't mean it's healthy.

Most of us who are fat know this
I do my best to stay healthy. I fast daily until lunch time, exercise almost daily, take vitamins etc etc. I just happen to still (currently) be fat

Hopefully the cardio (spin classes 30-90 mins daily) keeps my heart and lungs healthy and the weight training is good for my bones

LilacPoppy · 22/08/2022 01:25

@hellosunshineagainx you are confusing being plus size with being unattractive. It's just a statistical fact, it's not healthy to be overweight but nobody is looking at you in a negative way.

Several people saying how HUGE I am

mamabear715 · 22/08/2022 01:25

Some of us are older, less mobile, after a lifetime of being stick thin. Be careful what you say, it might come back to haunt you.. I have ONE meal a day, mostly veggie.

chocolatemademefat · 22/08/2022 01:28

Thanks for pointing that out to us because it’s a well known fact that size 18 and above women have no idea that they’re fat. Thank goodness there’s up their own arse skinny Minnie’s willing to point that out to us. I feel so blessed. Consider it your good deed for the day. 🙄

PeloAddict · 22/08/2022 01:28

It's just one of those things people comment on more
It's not healthy to drink too much alcohol or eat no veg or never exercise or a million other things, but that stuff isn't visible on the outside

People can say a size 20 isn't healthy but might say a size 8 is, when maybe they're as healthy/unhealthy as each other. If the size 8 drinks too much and eats all processed food is that more unhealthy than the size 20 who eats 10 portions of veg and doesn't drink? I dunno, it's complicated

Kerrrmieee · 22/08/2022 01:29

AuntTwacky · 22/08/2022 00:34

Wow so aggressive. 16 stone is actually way bigger than size 18

Not always, I've just dropped to 15.5 stone from 16 stone. I was 16 on top and 18 on bottom. Now I'm 16 on both. If I drop another 2 stone I'll be 14 top but still 16 bottom cos I've got massive hips n arse! I'm 5'9 btw.

Gingerkittykat · 22/08/2022 01:29

It was Snag Tights who made this post, they sell tights and other clothing from a size 4 up to a size 32 so 18 would be a normal size for them. They design their clothes around a size 24 and then scale up or down, the size 36 is designed for someone with a waist size of 66 inches.

Most plus size ranges start at an 18 these days.

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 01:29

RhubarbMoon · 22/08/2022 01:05

Size 16 being average doesn't stop it being plus size. It just means that the average size of women in the UK is plus sized - the average UK woman is overweight.

This in spades

OP posts:
Blaggertyjibbet · 22/08/2022 01:29

Of course 18 is plus size. However, as close to 2 in 3 (62.8%) UK adults is overweight and 27.8% are actually obese, it is not your imagination that a 16 looks/is average. Just because it’s average, though, doesn’t mean it’s not plus. It’s more a case that the majority of women are plus sizes these days. Personally, I don’t think we should change the definition of what is or isn’t ‘plus’ on the basis of what’s average as it just normalizes unhealthy weight.

Kerrrmieee · 22/08/2022 01:30

But yes, it is plus size and I am way overweight.

MaryJoLisa · 22/08/2022 01:33

mackthepony · 22/08/2022 01:22

Just because it's average doesn't mean it's healthy.

Totally agree. I'm size 16. Call me curvy, plus size, whatever. I'm medically obese, I'm fat. I know I'm fat and when I'm size 12 or under I look better and feel far better. I've got a pair of size 16 jeans I had post DD in 2005 and can't get them over my thighs. We are kidding ourselves we are healthy or as 'plus size" as we think we are.

hellosunshineagainx · 22/08/2022 01:34

Why do people care so much about other peoples weight and size anyway.

YellowPlumbob · 22/08/2022 01:39

I went from mid range normal 9st (8st to 10st for my height and age - but the only time I’ve ever been 8st or less is when I was severely depressed/anxious and wasn’t eating), to the 16st which put my well into “morbidly obese” in the space of a few months. More or less doubled my body weight. I felt I was disgusting.

I do not think this about other people.

What I do think is disgusting is that being obese is as unhealthy as smoking or drinking to excess, and claiming otherwise is just stupid. Its damaging. As a nation are are mostly overweight, we no longe recognise what a health weight looks like, and as the average weight continues to go up, this will only get worse for future generations.
