To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:09

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

Why do people care so much about other peoples weight and size anyway.

The comments were by snag. Make tights for everybody but all their images use larger ladies, some very large.

I think their comments reflect the views of their demographic of consumers. Nobody else is making a fuss about it.

Reading some of the comments here has made me feel really sad. I haven't been obese my whole like just since I had my son, pnd and digestive issues. I can't believe this is how people see me, I'm still a human being its not a personal failure or disgusting to have put in weight in hard times. Our relationships with food are complicated and the modern lifestyle isn't helpful

Try not to let this thread get to you. It's not a thread to discuss health issues or obesity problems. It's a thread so people can post whatever they want to about "plus size" under the guise of telling it straight. You are a lot more than your weight. Or your dress size. And you are right it is complicated.

Which comments have made you sad? I'm rather impressed by this thread so far for late night MN standards. I'm massive and have personally found all the comments so far to be either neutral or even pleasant.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 01:50

I do not think this about other people

Agree with this entirely. I care not about someone else’s size - really don’t notice it tbh. I do however not like it when I gain and feel better as a 10, 12 max.

I agree. I don’t think there have been any horrid comments at all. Other than stating average sizes/stats, I think it has been very respectful for a late nighter.

Same.

I’ve been left with loose skin, despite not being obese for very long - around 18 months total before the weight actually started coming off (as I had to stay on the meds) and it took 6 months to get back to my normal once I’d stopped the fucking things.

My body shape has changed more than it did after each pregnancy - half of my size 10s no longer fit properly/don’t quite sit right.

Most of my family are morbidly obese, and a handful are naturally very slender - I was always the latter. I’ve watched family members ignore their diabetes with disastrous consequences, my Grandmother is so heavy she can barely breathe properly, they all have a long list of serious health issues and not one of them works.

I spent around a decade weight training too for strength, tone and general flexibility. It’s going to take me a long time to get that previous fitness level back.

Hilarious. I’m 5’10 and was an 18 until about a year ago. Nothing unhealthy about what I was doing it was actually meds from doctors. Actually sitting here acting like the health police when you know nothing about others lives. 16 has been ‘average’ womens size for about 5 years. Catch up.

Well this thread is just lovely…

Who’s angry?
Where are all these thin wool?
I don’t think we can be reading the same thread. Genuinely curious to know what has offended people on here?

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 02:11

people (not wool)

Well its kinda fat shaming people for a start

Where? Who is fat shaming? I genuinely don’t see it.

There is a discussion about average UK size, UK weight stats for women. And Snagtights response to VB increasing her sizes to 18. I read nothing as fat-shaming, unless I’ve missed it.

You might not read it as fat shaming but thats exactly what it is!

Which part?

Have you read the link in the OP? The only ones making a fuss about body size are the snagtights followers?

Why is it fat/shaming to point out a average sizes are higher because more women are ow and obese? I haven’t seen one insult along those lines.

@AuntTwacky depends on your height
Am I plus size? But people seem to have this thing that a size 18 is heaving themselves upstairs gasping for air and unable to wipe their own arse (I've seen on here before)
This is me at an 18

No way do you look plus size . Anyone saying otherwise is clearly jealous you look fantastic

This poster herself said she looks plus-sized.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 02:21

And guess what… you can look plus size AND fantastic.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

knitnerd90 · 22/08/2022 02:22

YABU given the context. The IG post wasn't saying an 18 isn't in plus, it's that going up to an 18 isn't really "designing for plus size". It's adding an extra size up, it's not really "designing for plus size" which actually involves redoing patterns. Traditionally in the USA the top size has been a 14 which is a UK 18, and this has been true for a long time (although the sizes themselves have gotten bigger: saying a size is "average" doesn't mean much if sizing isn't consistent). Some lines go up to a US 18, but they are not considered "plus size" lines.

TBH much of this thread seems designed to look down on fat women. The correlation between health and weight is actually quite complicated and even insofar as it's true, dress size isn't a very good measurement of it. A friend and I are about the same height and weight but our dress sizes are not the same, because we carry our weight differently. There's also massive difference between a 16 and a 30. I'm tall, over 5'9". If I were a 16, I would be overweight by BMI, but I wouldn't be obese.

All the posts where people say that's huge/ that's massive

The poor lady who has said below how sad this post has made her

All the posts from the people saying I am a 6 so yes a 16 is huge etc

Nasty nasty nasty

Nobody has said ‘that’s huge’ or ‘that’s massive’

I’ve skimmed the whole thread and the only people saying this are larger women calling themselves huge because they are offended a discussion of size is being had.

There hasn’t been one personal attack re bigger ladies sizes, but there have been a few mentions of ‘skinny Minnie’s’ and ‘angry thin people’.

So what you are saying simply isn’t true.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 02:34

Calling a larger size large, or plus size, which it is, isn’t an insult. I can’t quite believe this tbh.

Marvellousmadness · 22/08/2022 02:41

Healthy should be size 10.

Size 14/16 might be the AVARAGE size now
. But it doesnt mean it is NORMAL..
There are so many fat people and obese people nowadays that people have seem to lost a realistic view on what is normal

I think that some obese people are in a bit of denial about the fact that they're large, so get upset when it's mentioned as it reminds them of how ashamed they feel. That's the only thing that I can think of really?
