I’ve started seeing someone (likely for not much longer).

We were discussing what each of us were doing for bank holiday a few weeks back and I’m going to Brighton to see a friend. He commented that he didn’t like Brighton and then asked that’s the gay capital right? I said it was and is there a problem with that?

He said no but it’s very liberal there and he doesn’t like it in his face.

Ok …..

And today I was saying how I want to see Queen, he said he loves Bohemia Rhapsody. I commented did he not like any others? So I stated listing them and I said “I want to break free” - and he said no definitely not that, I asked if it’s because he’s dressed as a woman in the video. He retorted no but it’s about how he wants to break free …

Whatever that means. I’m on the fence with him anyway but this has sealed it for me I think.

I wouldn't say homophobic by definition but definitely by intent.

He clearly doesn't like gay people but dresses it up enough to not cross any official lines in that conversation

Bin

Oh bin him off ffs 🙄

This.

To nick a quote from a person whose name I can’t remember: when someone tells you who they are, believe them

Thank you!

I want to see Killer Queen but have no one to go with as clearly none of my family or friends have taste.

Agreed. I’d move to Brighton if I could afford it.

Definitely homophobic OP and you’d be well rid of you dumped him

Valeriekat · 21/08/2022 15:39

Brighton Rock(s)

Madwife123 · 21/08/2022 15:41

He’s a knob, bin him off.

I notice those voting you are being unreasonable are also not commenting, are they homophobic as well?

I wondered that, too!

Anyone who doesn't like Queen wouldn't get over my doorstep.

Can I add (I'm 64, by the way) that I saw Queen live in 1976 and 1977? The first time live in Hyde Park with over 100,000 other people, the second at Liverpool Empire and we were on the front row. Just sayin'!

sunshineandstrawberryjam · 21/08/2022 15:48

Yes. He is homophobic. I'd bin him.

kimchifox · 21/08/2022 15:49

I live in Brighton and I'm glad he doesn't want to visit because he sounds like a dickhead! Bin him and come down here to celebrate your lucky escape!

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 21/08/2022 15:50

Sounds like red flags for homophobia at the least.

I’m not a fan of Brighton, but sounds like he just doesn’t like it because of the association with gay people.

never thought about “I want to break free”
being related to sexuality.

That would have been incredible. Sad I’ll never experience that and any concert I got to now is just a sea of people with their phones out.

Brighton Rock(s)

Drat, beat me to it!
I can't imagine him saying 'You're my best friend' either...

Triffid1 · 21/08/2022 16:04

The next thing he'll be complaining about how "all the tv shows these days have to have gay people" or "why are adverts filled with black people?"

It's the kind of comment I get from my 90year old father. I wouldn't call him homophobic in the true sense of the word - he's had gay friends and has never been anything but welcoming to me and my siblings' gay friends - but he's certainly not super relaxed and comfortable with gay people. It's almost understandable (albeit annoying) in a man who is in his 10th decade. Not in a partner in 2022.....

neverbeenskiing · 21/08/2022 16:04

He said no but it’s very liberal there and he doesn’t like it in his face.

So he's fine with people being gay as long as they keep it to themselves. Twat. You can do better.

Bloodoranged · 28/08/2022 00:57

Have you dumped him yet?

OneTC · 28/08/2022 01:18

You often see comments on here about Brighton being super liberal and being described as woke though.

And men in dresses also not a crowd favourite.

NumberTheory · 28/08/2022 03:55

I think you can dislike LGBTQ+ culture in the way it manifests in the west without being homophobic in the sense of thinking people shouldn’t have sex with others of the same sex. But he likely is.

Regardless of whether he’s homophobic or not, if he doesn’t want to go to Brighton because it’s too liberal and you think Brighton’s great because it’s so liberal, he’s probably not the guy for you.

DDivaStar · 28/08/2022 06:46

To be fair Brighton is not everyone's cup of tea. I live close but visit less and less, partly for financial reasons, it can be eye wateringly expensive. But also just feel less inclined as its such a party town.....

He does sound like he has some homophobic views and you dont sound well suited.

Thats because there a lot of homophobes on MN.

Anewdayanewdawn · 28/08/2022 06:58

doesn’t sound like your values match. Personally I wouldn’t be with someone so insecure that they’d worry about visiting Brighton… London actually has a higher LGBTQ + population, is he worried about visiting there too???
yes it’s homophobic. Just as it would be racist if he was saying he didn’t w like the idea of a certain town or area as it has a rep for being more racially diverse…
