To think it's odd that our first 'Period Dignity Officer' is a man?

So pretty much what the title says. The first Period Dignity Officer has been appointed and they are male. One one hand I'm thinking 'WTF' and the other I'm thinking this is a very good PR stint/opportunity to actively involve men in the conversation.

It’s just disgraceful that the one job that should be for women has been given to a man. It’s a joke

I haven't seen that post but posted in here are I don't think it's only a 'feminist' issue.

Apparently he used to work for Imperial Tobacco.

SpinCityBlues · 16/08/2022 21:27

I don't think a bloke in a public health position who used to work for Imperial Tobacco is a 'feminist issue'. It's a public health issue. It's a public confidence issue.

RincewindsHat · 16/08/2022 21:29

Unbelievably poor recruitment. What was Scotland trying to achieve, the ultimate in mansplaining?

Fucking hell.

Allmarbleslost · 16/08/2022 21:32

It's more than odd it's fucking ridiculous. I thought it was a bad joke at first!

mycatisannoying · 16/08/2022 21:32

I'm Scottish and this is the first I've heard of this. To be fair, I've just started a new job and my head is full of it.
Oh my goodness, what WERE they thinking BlushConfused

What would a man know about how to make females feel they have dignity around their periods? No male could ever fully understand.

JohnsShirt · 16/08/2022 21:37

Welcome to Scotland.
Ugh.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 16/08/2022 21:38

This is the third thread I've seen on this.

It's also on the BBC news page.

So, it's obviously an issue. And with bloody good right too.

Never mind that he is a bloke.

Never mind that this is a 36k a year job that he is not qualified for (and I say that based on the job description and his pitiful CV)

Utter. Fucking. Disgrace.

It should be neither!
Now we're glad it's a man as opposed to a man in a dress..Wtf?

daretodenim · 16/08/2022 21:38

That he's a man in itself may not have been such an issue if he was medically experienced plus experienced working with women and girls. Not great, but not as bad.

This guy's neither.

There must be hundreds of women who have experience of both. If they weren't applying, then clearly the SS wasn't out in the right places. If they did apply I'd like to know what it was about him that made him better suited for this role than them.

Apparently he's got four women supporting him in the role.

So there's no way to look at this which has good optics.

He's able to wear a red polo though, I guess that's..helpful?

daretodenim · 16/08/2022 21:40

*SS = ad

MumEeeee · 16/08/2022 21:40

Oh…well… great choice for diversity. I’m sure all cultural and ethnic groups will welcome a man talking periods to their young women. Great access for all and ensuring equality 😒

Topgub · 16/08/2022 21:40

Wtf is a period dignity officer?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2022 21:42

It's ridiculous.

But the entire job is ridiculous. It shouldn't take somebody being paid nearly 40 grand a year to make places support period poverty.

Because only feminists have periods, right? 🤣

user1234560480 · 16/08/2022 21:45

It wouldn't be so bad if he had a background eg in health or social work but he doesn't seem to. And there's no way some females will want to speak to a man about periods. Bizarre and inappropriate decision.

TokyoTen · 16/08/2022 21:52

I am not sure why anyone needs a Period Dignity Officer in the first place. Women have had periods for hundreds of years... but if they have one and its a man I don't see a problem. It opens up the conversation with men (if that's what is needed) which is a good thing.

BeenHereAWhileNow · 16/08/2022 21:54

Any man that would take this job is not someone I would want to discuss periods with

Scotsnet, more like!

FOJN · 16/08/2022 21:57

They're just trolling us now. Its not as if Scotland doesn't have form for this kind of bullshit, there is already a biological male running Edinburgh Rape Crisis.

LizzieSiddal · 16/08/2022 21:58

Any man who would apply for this job should stay well away from teenage girls and women and the people who appointed him should be fucking ashamed of themselves!

I’m so angry about it. I wouldn’t want my teenage girls anywhere near these people.
