To think it's odd that our first 'Period Dignity Officer' is a man?

So pretty much what the title says. The first Period Dignity Officer has been appointed and they are male. One one hand I'm thinking 'WTF' and the other I'm thinking this is a very good PR stint/opportunity to actively involve men in the conversation.

It really depends on the job description. If it’s about project managing legislation or contracts then stupid title but crack on. If it’s about representing women, educating girls, being a champion etc then it was a bloody ridiculous appointment.

MakeMineALarge1 · 16/08/2022 21:58

Surely the £36000 he is being paid could be used to fund period poverty?

LizzieSiddal · 16/08/2022 21:59

Scotsnet, more like!

Hmm The police can fuck off too.

Indiana2021 · 16/08/2022 22:01

I think the very fact that he thought he might be the best 'man' for the job says it all really. Self awareness bypass and supreme confidence. What could possibly go wrong?

Having read the job description which talks about 'young people who menstruate' 🙄I can imagine some they/them HR type in the Council positively wetting their/thems😉pants in delight when a man applied.

Mad times!

User48751490 · 16/08/2022 22:02

Give him a chance before you chastise him. Poor guy hasn't even been in his post a week and you are all ready to stick the boot in. He might do well.

FelicityFlops · 16/08/2022 22:02

When can we expect the first female shaving poverty officer?

cherish123 · 16/08/2022 22:03

Nope. Not ridiculous. Half the population have periods. Men should not be embarrassed about periods.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2022 22:04

LizzieSiddal · 16/08/2022 21:58

Any man who would apply for this job should stay well away from teenage girls and women and the people who appointed him should be fucking ashamed of themselves!

I’m so angry about it. I wouldn’t want my teenage girls anywhere near these people.

This seems a bit OTT. What exactly do you mean by, 'These people' I wonder?

CaveMum · 16/08/2022 22:05

Apparently the job was only advertised for 9 days, not exactly much opportunity for a wide ranging search for the best candidate.

What men?

BrokeAsABone · 16/08/2022 22:06

I wish I knew what is going on with government. It all feels like trolling...no, worse actually. Sadism. It feels like the elite are in some kind of sadistic game with us...see who gets elected and who can do the most damage!

I never thought Scotland or Ireland would fall prey to this evil shit. I thought suffering was meant to make you strong, and wise.

neverwakeasleepingdragon · 16/08/2022 22:07

I thought if there was a valid reason for it, certain jobs could be designated as female only. This seems to be an obvious one...

It doesn't matter whether women and girls should feel comfortable talking to a bloke about periods. The point is, many of them don't. Why put an additional barrier in place there?

The job is supposed to be about period dignity. There's no dignity in a young lass having to talk about her periods with this man.

He's an ex-PT. He's not a doctor. He's not a gynaecologist. Why should any woman feel safe discussing something so intimate with him? What makes him qualified?

"Although affecting women directly, periods are an issue for everyone. We’ll also raise awareness of the menopause, which, although a natural process for women, has wider repercussions in the world of work and family."

He may be well-meaning, but the above quote gets my back up. Periods and the menopause are awful for women. No man gets to claim a fraction of that suffering.

Just as I'll never understand what it's like to piss standing up, no man will ever understand what it's like to be a teenage girl bleeding through her clothing.

What winds me up is the idea that there wasn't a single woman out there who might be suitable for this job.

It feels like a comment on how we don't understand how our own bodies work. And how we need a man to tell us.

The role is advertise that this is what Scotland are trying to do.

ethelredonagoodday · 16/08/2022 22:10

@neverwakeasleepingdragon has it right. It's the idea that not a single woman was up to this job.

I just find it mind boggling.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/08/2022 22:11

What made him even apply for the job? What was going through his mind?

GCAcademic · 16/08/2022 22:11

Well, it’s the next logical step from companies and healthcare providers talking about “people who menstruate” and telling us that some men have periods.

PollyRockets · 16/08/2022 21:23

YABU to repost this

Head over to FWR where there has (obviously) been much discussion on this already

So in other words women STFU eh?
Same old same old 🙄

Ravenblack1 · 16/08/2022 22:16

Some people have FWR hidden.

It's good it's being discussed elsewhere

tigger1001 · 16/08/2022 22:17

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2022 21:42

It's ridiculous.

But the entire job is ridiculous. It shouldn't take somebody being paid nearly 40 grand a year to make places support period poverty.

Absolutely this!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2022 22:18

What is FWR?

I'm sure his personal experiences on periods and shit will go a long way

Omfg. That quote has made me hate him. Literally hate him. I'm currently losing my mind thanks to perimenopause and if my husband or any man tried to make the horror all about them and the impact on them / the workplace I would not be held accountable.

neverwakeasleepingdragon · 16/08/2022 22:28

@SquirrelSoShiny I know, right? If he was truly an ally to women, he'd have refused to take the job/not applied in the first damn place! He's trying to claim our issues as his own.

The only man I will tolerate talking about women's health is one who's bloody well gone to medical school!

Periods and shit. And period shit. I bet he's so clued up on how progesterone either gives you the worst diarrhoea or constipation or, better yet, both. I'm sure every young girl wants to hear him talking about those issues.

God, I'm with @SquirrelSoShiny. I just hate him already.
