Poor ds1 was squished and red faced and swollen, a really ugly newborn. He was adorable to us but even now, I know he was ugly. He was a forceps delivery and was really bruised and swollen with a squished head.

He turned into a cute older baby though, bright orange hair and ice blue eyes.

Enko · 09/08/2022 12:20

My 4th was not an attractive baby. She was however adorably sweet and due to that cute. For years we called her ugly bugs. At age 18 she is stunning. Of my 4 by far the most attractive child. She grew into her features

drawacircleroundit · 09/08/2022 12:23

My DC1 was beautiful. Faintly tanned with jaundice, and bright blonde hair.
My DC2 was shocking. Monobrow, an eruption of dark hair, lots of it, and she shat on the midwife’s shoes as she was born.

My son looked like a roswell style alien. He was born at 37 weeks. Such a thin triangular face! It kind of shocked me! He grew chubby and cute later, but I remember once when he was ten months old and he had cradle cap and his checks were almost weeping pus from teething, I thought "omg, only a mother could love this face!"

Haha I always think that about the stage around where they turn 1 and haven't started walking yet so they're verging from adorably chubby into mordibly obese, and their hair grows in random tufts all over the place Grin

pierpoint · 09/08/2022 12:33

I always said I would say if my babies were ugly. I had my 1st and she really was a gorgeous baby and everyone complimented her. But I look at some pictures I took of her and I think she looks ugly on some. Same now. She's a really stunning girl, stands out and always told to get her into modelling (she's 11 now) but I still take pictures and wouldn't post them because there not the best ones. Sometimes she does faces on purpose because she looks not nice!

UniBallEye · 09/08/2022 12:56

This thread is hilarious!
When dd was born she was small and petit and she was pretty cute. One of the younger nurses on the ward took her off to the nurses station to show her to the other nurses (and I'm sure they were thrilled about that !)
I remember looking at her in awe and similar to someone up the thread , feeling sorry for all the other parents with their ugly newborns! Honestly those hormones have a lot to answer for!

Looking back at photos, she was cute but nowhere near the utter perfection I believed she was at the time!

A friend had a baby the year after me and before her baby was born she was very adamant that she would be able to tell if her baby was not attractive and that she would say it like it was etc

I wared her that this would probably not be the case and that nature would ensure that she thought her baby was the nicest etc. Her baby was born and objectively was not a good looking baby - she was huge, with a squished red face and looked like a very angry old man.

Cue...oh my god, isn't she divine...she's so perfect I could stare at her all day...she the cutest baby in the world and I would say if she wasn't - it was hilarious!!

DS was really ugly. Looked like Phil Mitchell! I knew at the time. I loved and adored him and thought he was gorgeous but at the same time I knew it was just not me and DH thought that - he was objectively quite ugly. He's gorgeous now though (7).

Arthursmom · 09/08/2022 13:19

This thread is hilarious 😂 love it!! DS has always been the most beautiful child (I'm a 'room for improvement' kinda mom so have been told by many who stop to comment). He always smiled, is mixed race, has great teeth and 3 dimples!! He lucked out but we shall see what the future brings. His cousin is the same but with the most fantastic eye lashes and curly blond hair. His other cousin however, Jesus the boy looks like an alien 👽 lovely wee lad just needs to grow into his features. It all evens out eventually.

Goldbar · 09/08/2022 13:33

It all evens out eventually.

I love your optimism 😁.

crosstalk · 09/08/2022 13:41

DC both ugly, hairless, rotund babies, toddlers (more hair less fat) and children (even more hair). I knew it as did DP. We still loved them to bits.

rosegoldivy · 09/08/2022 13:44

My girl twin looked like the bald cat from austin powers. insanely bald and huge stick out ears and petite facial features. we took the piss out of her a lot.

luckily has now grown into her ears and has lots of blonde hair

LewisLittUp · 09/08/2022 13:46

DD1 was cute but looking back at pictures, bloody hell did she have a big head! It's ok, she has grown into it 😂

DD2 was (IMO) a very gorgeous and cute baby, big blue eyes, heart shape face, little button nose and lovely rosebud lips. She is still so melt-your-ice-cold-heart cute. Looking back at pictures of her I just think "how could someone so perfect looking have been such a twatty baby?" She was an absolute devil baby/toddler. Now she is 4 she is much nicer to me!!

Phil Mitchell hahaha am buckled!

LaMadrilena · 09/08/2022 13:50

I was determined to be objective about DD and actually tried really hard to find imperfections, like her forehead being ever so slightly big. But if I'm honest, 14m later, I'm struggling to hold myself back from posting a photo of how utterly flipping gorgeous she is, hahaha!

Having said that, I'm aware of when I find other babies prettier. A friend has the most ridiculously beautiful 14m ever. And he makes donkey noises on demand.

Then on the other hand I was introduced to a couple the other day whose little girl had been born with several characteristics that they confessed to be a bit disappointed about. Just cosmetic things, but very obvious and an unlucky combination of several at once, and I think that must be hard.

Wolfiee · 09/08/2022 13:51

My son looked like an alien as a baby. He had a really odd shaped head (really wide at the top and narrow at the chin). He had massive sticky out ears and huge eyes. Even his grandma said he was a “funny looking little thing”.

Now he’s 21 and looks like a male model (as said by others, not me)

Wouldloveanother · 09/08/2022 13:51

RenegadeMatron · 09/08/2022 03:51

This thread is amusing.

’My DC was fugly/funny looking as a baby. Oh, but s/he’s gorgeous now!’ Grin

Kind of confirming the OP’s wondering - children are beautiful to their parents.

I wonder if anyone is going to come on and say ‘my child was unattractive as a baby - and still is’. Doubt it!

Haha this!

Googlecanthelpme · 09/08/2022 13:52

Oh lord one of mine was not cute in the slightest! Of course I absolutely loved them to bits and thought them the most beautiful thing ever, but objectively I knew he was a scrunched up funny little potato head.
Few years on and he’s absolutely beautiful and that’s not me being biased, he’s gorgeous to look at. Beautiful skin, lovely hair, big eyes. Just scrummy. As a young baby he was very questionable.
my other, beautiful from the moment they popped out and super photogenic too.

Wouldloveanother · 09/08/2022 13:52

@LaMadrilena what characteristics out of interest?

SallyWD · 09/08/2022 13:54

My son looked really odd for the first few months! I took loads of photos of him but just couldn't get a nice one. He improved after a few months and looked completely lovely and normal. He's now 9 and exceptionally handsome in my opinion! I certainly wasn't deluded in those first few months though. I knew he looked like a little goblin.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 09/08/2022 13:56

side note: me and her dad are average looking

Just wanted to hone in on this part of a previous post - the funniest (and meanest!) thing my sister ever said to me was when I was gazing at my gorgeous twin boys, misty eyed, wondering how their dad and I had produced such gorgeous babies - when she said “well, it’s like a double negative, innit?!” Cheeky toe rag Grin

Anyway - immediate newborns are not that good looking - and the aforementioned twins definitely not as they were early so scrawny as anything - but yes I did think (and still think!) by babies are beautiful!

LaMadrilena · 09/08/2022 13:58

@Wouldloveanother she had a large growth on her nose, a skin tag on the surface of her eye (it has a proper name, which I've forgotten), and a very large strawberry mark over one leg.

BeanCounterBabe · 09/08/2022 14:09

I was convinced DD1 was a beautiful newborn despite jaundice and losing nearly 10% birth weight. She was scrawny and yellow, a cross between ET and an ancient tortoise. She was a very cute toddler and not bad looking at 14. DD2 is less pretty but was extremely cute and very good at flashing a smile and getting a lot of attention.

SpicyMama · 09/08/2022 01:17

Funny you should post this as I wonder.

I have a 6 month old baby and she is gorgeous. She is mixed race with a full head of a huge curly Afro, dark skin and green eyes. She has a cute button nose and Cupid bow lips. She really is a beautiful baby.

She gets stopped ALL the time by people and her pictures have even been stolen online and put on various ‘cute babies of instagram’ accounts (pissed me off actually and i no longer post her even though I want to show her off).

My health visitor actually said she’s the prettiest baby she’s seen which was sweet.

side note: me and her dad are average looking.

This sounds really shallow but when I see other parents post about their ‘beautiful’ babies I do wonder, do you genuinely believe your baby is objectively beautiful to the world or are just saying that because your meant too? Because these babies are bald and plain. They all look similar.
Then I read the comments that say ‘beautiful prince’ etc and I think aren’t we seeing the same thing? An average at best baby? All babies are cute but do the parents genuinely believe their babies are above average/striking etc.

I never paid much thought before I became a mum. But I think because my baby gets so much attention for her looks I notice more.
I also notice some ridiculously gorgeous babies and I wonder if their parents realise just how gorgeous their baby!

FYI - I am under no illusion that she will stay looking above average in looks forever. She may become a plain toddler or awkward looking child. It doesn’t matter a jot. Looks fade regardless so I don’t put any weight on it and don’t want her to feel that aesthetics have any importance whatsoever. I’m just posting about her looks because of this thread topic.

I think this. And it annoys me how they think it's cute but it's not and everyone is agreeing with them I don't know why it annoys me so much. I'm a terrible person.

Sartre · 09/08/2022 14:31

Honestly my DD was not cute at all as a baby. She’s lovely looking now she’s 11 but as a baby, no she just wasn’t. She never bloody smiled which made matters worse. I have a pic of her sitting next to DS in front of the Christmas tree both dressed as Santa, he’s grinning and she’s miserable as sin.
