Sat outside a lovely cafe by the canal in the sun, lovely except for the wafting of some ladies cigarette smoke across the table. i probably am a bit unreasonable but I just hate smoke when eating. Seems a shame that to enjoy outdoor dining I need to suffer smokers second hand smoke. So...

YABU - Suck that second hand smoke up
YANBU - There should be no smoking where food is being enjoyed outdoors

Smoking anywhere should be banned .

Mostly because theres no positives to it apart from tax revenues

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/08/2022 12:03

I smoke and I agree, I wait till I'm away from other people.

liveforsummer · 08/08/2022 12:06

In doorways too. You often have to walk through a plume of smoke to enter say a shopping centre or high street shop. Also people walking along pavements while smoking - usually cigarette held down at toddler eye level when not in their mouth. Smoke speaking along the length of the path.

Arbesque · 08/08/2022 12:06

YANBU. We get so few sunny days when we can eat out.

The fact that smoking isn't banned out of doors doesn't mean consideration shouldn't come into play.

Spraying perfume around isn't banned, but I'm pretty sure those women would soon ask you to stop if you sat at a nearby table spraying it liberally all over the place.

RuthBrenner · 08/08/2022 12:06

Common sense should tell people not to smoke where other people are eating, it smells disgusting 😷that also applies to those awful sickly sweet smelling vapes.

Stichintimesavesstapling · 08/08/2022 12:07

I often want to sit outside because with two feral DC it's better for everyone but the smoke stops me. I agree, it should be banned from any establishment that serves food. Vaping too - I don't want to smell some weird vanilla and cherry concoction while eating a sandwich.

DillDanding · 08/08/2022 12:12

I agree. It should be banned anywhere food is served.

It’s so foul to be in a pub garden and have smoke wafting over.

LosingMyPancakes · 08/08/2022 12:18

Not to mention discarded cigs everywhere despite most places providing bins/ashtrays!

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 08/08/2022 12:21

There should be separate smoking areas. I completely agree its not nice when you're eating and smoke wafts at you, but the smokers are every bit as much customers as we are, and should have separate smoking areas to stick to.

mama93345 · 08/08/2022 12:22

Yanbu it's rank

SexyLittleNosferatu · 08/08/2022 12:24

You are unreasonable. Smokers have already been forced outside in all weathers. You aren't coming to any harm for the 60 minutes or whatever that you are sat there, you just don't like the smell which to be honest is tough.

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 08/08/2022 12:31

Smoking is a choice that one person makes and effects everyone around them though. It stinks, its not pleasant to breathe in, we know the dangers of second hand smoke, plus it's an irritant even without all that for a lot of people. As an asthmatic, I can't tell you how much difference the smoking indoors ban has made to my quality of life. My asthma has definitely improved. I can feel the smoke on my chest, even outside, within a few minutes sometimes. It's not pleasant. I make the choice not to smoke to stay healthy and not live on my inhalers, so yes it's frustrating when I have that choice taken away.

blueheaven97 · 08/08/2022 12:33

They should just ban smoking in all public places. In fact, they should have done that years ago. Let people smoke in their own homes, and that's it.

TroysMammy · 08/08/2022 12:34

Why should smokers have the monopoly of sitting outside eating and drinking? As seats are directly outside cafes you have to get through the stink of smoke just to go inside.

Hoppinggreen · 08/08/2022 12:34

They might also be customers but my food doesn’t ruin their cigarettes whereas their cigarette smoke ruins my food
Should be banned everywhere food is served

MissyB1 · 08/08/2022 12:38

YANBU smoking should be banned in all eating areas. It’s totally selfish and anti social to smoke where people are eating.

CornishGem1975 · 08/08/2022 12:39

Smoking is just vile and should be banned full stop but as that won't happen, I agree that it should be banned anywhere there is food being served.

I honestly don't get how smokers themselves can enjoy being around that stink, and they smell so badly themselves (and any smokers who want to come at me and say as per usual that 'oh I don't smell', you are wrong, very wrong).

Sally090807 · 08/08/2022 12:41

Many people at my local vape indoors, I was also on holiday recently enjoying a cocktail, watching the sunset on the terrace where the seats were extremely close together. The guy sitting about 5ft away from me lit a huge cigar that absolutely stunk. There were no other seats to move to so I had to leave. So bloody inconsiderate.

Hermonthis · 08/08/2022 12:45

Smoking is gross. I have never complained about people smoking around me but a few weeks ago another diner did complain.

It was hideous. Smoker was shouting “I’m entitled to be here as much as you are”.

In the end the other diner said “well, at least I tried. Smoking says a lot about someone’s intelligence” and she left. (I believe they were both quite rude tbh!)

He put the cigarette out after that and looked a bit sheepish 😱

limitedperiodonly · 08/08/2022 12:45

Many restaurants and pubs ban smoking at outside tables even though they are not obliged to. Go to one of those if you want to sit outside and not encounter cigarette smoke. That's what I do. I am not a smoker.

For the rest of the time which is mostly rainy and cold I stay inside where it is smoke-free and smokers have to go out and usually have to stand well clear of the door. It seems a bit churlish to insist they stay away from me when I am on their "territory" because it's sunny and I fancy it.

I don't understand why non-smokers get exercised by this when most outside areas near me are on busy streets choked with traffic fumes. I suppose if you lived in a countryside idyll it would be different. Though my BIL lives in such a place and we have to drive to the pub along with everyone else because there's no public transport so on a warm, still Sunday afternoon the air pollution will be very high. But it's not as noticeable as a few people smoking fags.

TeapotTitties · 08/08/2022 12:46

YANBU. Even when I smoked (many moons ago - before the smoking ban), I would always walk away from the eating area, have a cigarette and then return.

It doesn't take much effort to be thoughtful.

WillPowerLite · 08/08/2022 12:46

Yes, outdoor smoking is anti-social.

I think the worst is people smoking in their own homes, when they live in flats or terraces and the neighbours get the smoke. I think it should be banned near anyone else's home.

TeapotTitties · 08/08/2022 12:47

In the end the other diner said “well, at least I tried. Smoking says a lot about someone’s intelligence” and she left. (I believe they were both quite rude tbh!)

Yes they were both incredibly rude.

BasiliskStare · 08/08/2022 12:49

I think considerate smokers should walk away from those having a meal & many do .

FlyingSaucerss · 08/08/2022 12:51

I would just like to see smoking banned completely, not gonna happen but I can dream.
