Sat outside a lovely cafe by the canal in the sun, lovely except for the wafting of some ladies cigarette smoke across the table. i probably am a bit unreasonable but I just hate smoke when eating. Seems a shame that to enjoy outdoor dining I need to suffer smokers second hand smoke. So...

YABU - Suck that second hand smoke up
YANBU - There should be no smoking where food is being enjoyed outdoors

Passive smoking (inhaling others' smoke) literally DOES cause harm to those inhaling it. So it's not just unpleasant, it's harmful. Why should non smokers and children suffer?

They shouldn’t. They fought for inside to be smokefree so they can sit there.

Fifife · 13/08/2022 10:12

I'm a non smoker but now the suns out people want it banned 🤣. The rest of year it's only the smokers who are out in the cold and wet weather.

Yes outdoor dining areas should be treated as indoor when it comes to smoking.

MrsDThomas · 13/08/2022 10:17

That’s not true @Fifife . There are many who love being outdoors in the wind and rain. Im one of them.

Good luck with that. 😂

Yes, I came to enjoy the outdoorinesss of smoking. You become quite skilled in adapting to the elements, there's either the nice regular moments of meditation throughout the day, or sometimes the social aspect of chatting with other smokers.

Smoker here. Fine with smoking being disallowed outside restaurants, but pubs are adult spaces where (in technical terms) people go to poison themselves with alcohol, so I don't agree poisoning yourself with nicotine should be banned outside pubs. I'm not a person who thinks children should be banned from pubs, but it's really for their parents to moderate their behaviour in an adult space; i.e. move them away from smoke or anything else not child-friendly - easily done as they can go indoors, and many pubs have playgrounds and so on too.

No more so than the exhaust fumes you don't wring your hands over. All that 'won't somebody think of the children' doesn't seem to apply to the actual air pollution killing us, it's just the odd smoker 🙄

Really, this issue would be resolved if they made smokers go indoors.

By which I mean, have a remote shed or dome or something outside for smokers to go into, and they have to keep the doors shut. I’ve seen this sort of thing in US airports.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 13/08/2022 13:02

As an ex smoker who now gets asthma just by being near smokers, I think there should be a separate smoking area

houseonthehill · 13/08/2022 13:54

I think there should be a separate smoking area

In the context of the OP, there is, though.

Smoking rooms are useful in places like airports, especially in Departures, and are welcomed by smokers, I think. As you say, they are a feature in many countries. I'm pretty sure that they are not allowed under the UK law, though - an example of not thinking legislation through. A few UK airports do have smoking areas after Security, in the form of semi-enclosed balconies, with a mesh over the open part. They work quite well.
