Sat outside a lovely cafe by the canal in the sun, lovely except for the wafting of some ladies cigarette smoke across the table. i probably am a bit unreasonable but I just hate smoke when eating. Seems a shame that to enjoy outdoor dining I need to suffer smokers second hand smoke. So...

YABU - Suck that second hand smoke up
YANBU - There should be no smoking where food is being enjoyed outdoors

YANBU (and I smoke). I tend these days to never take my fags further than my patio down the end of my garden. I don’t feel comfortable smoking in public these days. It should be banned in any outdoor food extablishment.

Threelittlelambs · 08/08/2022 12:51

They should just ban smoking in all public places. In fact, they should have done that years ago. Let people smoke in their own homes, and that's it

Non smokers can eat in their own gardens too - they don’t have to visit cafes and pubs for food.

I would just like to see smoking banned completely, not gonna happen but I can dream.

Dream away

Many restaurants and pubs ban smoking at outside tables even though they are not obliged to. Go to one of those if you want to sit outside and not encounter cigarette smoke. That's what I do. I am not a smoker.

For the rest of the time which is mostly rainy and cold I stay inside where it is smoke-free and smokers have to go out and usually have to stand well clear of the door. It seems a bit churlish to insist they stay away from me when I am on their "territory" because it's sunny and I fancy it.

I don't understand why non-smokers get exercised by this when most outside areas near me are on busy streets choked with traffic fumes. I suppose if you lived in a countryside idyll it would be different. Though my BIL lives in such a place and we have to drive to the pub along with everyone else because there's no public transport so on a warm, still Sunday afternoon the air pollution will be very high. But it's not as noticeable as a few people smoking fags.

But it's not 'their territory'. Some smokers just assume they have the monopoly on outdoor dining spaces because there's no legal ban on smoking out there and show absolutely no consideration for anyone else.

Tigerstigers · 08/08/2022 12:53

Same, hate it when everyone wants to enjoy the sunshine and can't because of the second hand smoke wafting your way. Vaping doesn't bother me as there's no harmful effects to anyone else from the vapour, but still don't think it should be allowed in dining areas.

WillPowerLite · 08/08/2022 12:46

Yes, outdoor smoking is anti-social.

I think the worst is people smoking in their own homes, when they live in flats or terraces and the neighbours get the smoke. I think it should be banned near anyone else's home.

So where exactly should people be allowed to smoke if they can’t even smoke in their own homes?

I am not a smoker by the way!

Lots of places have a no smoking policy in their outdoor dining areas and instead have a separate designated smoking area. I can think of very few places where I have come across people smoking in the outdoor dining area.

Agree. Yanbu.

You don't get addiction?

I agree, it's often a very complicated thing for each individual but surely you can get the concept itself?

Arbesque · 08/08/2022 13:08

I've never seen a smoker take drags of a cigarette in between having formula of their food. But they seem happy to force people around them to inhale their second hand smoke while trying to eat their lunch.

Arbesque · 08/08/2022 13:08

Forkfuls of their food that should have read.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 08/08/2022 13:13

What makes the establishment most money? The smokers sitting outside possibly all year round or the people that eat outside a few times a year? The establishment is going to go with which ever one it is as they have a living to make.

StClare101 · 08/08/2022 13:14

Smoking is such a vile habit. It’s incredibly rude to smoke where people are eating, or frankly, near people.

Luckily in Australia smoking seems to be a rarity these days.

LovelyLovelyWarmCoffee · 08/08/2022 13:14

The smokers are customers as well, which is why the cafes/restaurants don’t want to ban smoking.
Personally I am more annoyed by dogs when I am eating than by smoke, the cigarette lasts a few minutes whereas the dog is there the whole
time. But that is just me :)

chipsandpeas · 08/08/2022 13:19

i witnessed an altercation between smokers and people outside eating who objected to them smoking, the manager got involved and took the side of the smokers as they were regulars and were there pretty much every day and probably spent more than the non smokers who popped in once in a blue moon

'YANBU

Quite aside from the fact it' unattractive and smelly, the fact it's voluntarily contributing more tax to the govt would be enough to put me off Grin

Circlesandtriangles · 08/08/2022 13:20

My dad used to smoke and the worst was him smoking in the car when we were kids, ugh. Not having been around it for a long time, I really notice now when someone lights up and I do feel it ruins an outdoor meal, especially with the kids. I feel like I just want to get away and out of it immediately. Glad it's been gone from indoors for such a long time! Still remember the smell of smoke in my hair the next day after nights out before the ban!

Smoking is a dying trend these days anyway. The younger generation all vape or just don't smoke anything. It's seen as an old people thing these days.
As a previous smoker I started to feel uncomfortable smoking in public.

Apparently the uk are thinking about doing what New Zealand are doing and banning anyone born after a certain year from ever buying cigarettes legally, which will essentially mean at some point nobody will ever be able to legally buy Fags

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 08/08/2022 13:23

Oh and again as an ex smoker, it stinks ! But when you smoke you don't notice it at all weirdly !!

If you go to a restaurant or cafe that does not accept dogs though you won't find a dog next to you when seated in an outdoor area of that place. Far easier to avoid

Rainbowshit · 08/08/2022 13:26

YANBU. It's totally anti social to smoke anywhere near other people.

Skyeheather · 08/08/2022 13:26

I used to smoke and I agree. Even as a smoker I hated eating outside with other peoples smoke blowing on me whilst eating. I always used to move somewhere else if there were no smokers in the area.

They should do what they did in Spain during lockdown, have a smoking/vaping area but across the road/round the back, where there are no people.

Minesril · 08/08/2022 13:27

My neighbours two doors down smoke. I can smell it in my garden and sometimes in my conservatory (which doubles as the dining room/ playroom). Gross but what can you do?

maranella · 08/08/2022 13:27

Vaping should be banned too. I'm sick of being enveloped in a cloud of some revolting, cloying, fruit-smelling fug everywhere I go. Bleugh!
