Smoking in outdoor dining areas should be banned - AIBU?

Sat outside a lovely cafe by the canal in the sun, lovely except for the wafting of some ladies cigarette smoke across the table. i probably am a bit unreasonable but I just hate smoke when eating. Seems a shame that to enjoy outdoor dining I need to suffer smokers second hand smoke. So...

YABU - Suck that second hand smoke up
YANBU - There should be no smoking where food is being enjoyed outdoors

@Miffee good luck, it's a hard habit to crack and it was only for health reasons my bad finally could kick it - he was in hospital for three weeks (not smoking related) but was too poorly to go out and smoke so he literally broke the habit!

I'm not sure the "three weeks of outdoor dining" arguments hold water as it's not just 3 weeks of the year any more is it? We've been dining outdoors lots more since Covid in the many creative new covered outdoor spaces that businesses have invested in that are heated in winter etc. they weren't created just for smokers, they were made for everyone to enjoy but sadly smoking does detract from the enjoyment of a coffee or food.

I think providing a space for smokers away from non smokers would be ideal but impractical for most small businesses.

I appreciate the many considerate smokers here who use discretion and will not smoke when beside diners, your consideration is appreciated!

Nah bollocks to that, we're not a protected class. Perhaps one small disabled smoking area for those who are not able to leave the premises as easily but otherwise fuck us.

I am a dying breed (lol) among my peers and family. Out of the 20ish people I would call close to me who used to smoke there are 2 of us left. This is 100% due to the constant barrage of disdain and obstruction that's been thrown at us over 20 years.

The only thing that annoys me is its so effective why aren't they using it for obesity, driving, drinking, gambling. They have demonstrated they can do it.

Whammyyammy · 08/08/2022 16:20

Non smoker here. But a few years ago smokers were forced outside to smoke, shall we allow them back in?

I managed for 5 months once, it remains one of my biggest regrets that I went back to it. Not as big as starting in first place.

fyn · 08/08/2022 16:22

I would like it banned in public places, it’s a real trigger for my asthma.

Circlesandtriangles · 08/08/2022 16:24

@Whammyyammy Smokers are welcome indoors. They're just not welcome to smoke there.

couldn't help myself!

Some people are just never satisfied. Smokers have to endure being outside in the rain and cold in the winter when nobody wants to be outside. Then they become pariahs for the few weeks everyone else wants to use their space. I’m not a smoker but smoke doesn’t bother me and it’s not going to damage anyone’s health outdoors.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 08/08/2022 12:24

You are unreasonable. Smokers have already been forced outside in all weathers. You aren't coming to any harm for the 60 minutes or whatever that you are sat there, you just don't like the smell which to be honest is tough.

But if you are with 6ft of them you are coming to harm.

LoveLarry · 08/08/2022 16:36

YANBU

it's more obvious abroad on holiday with people lighting up at breakfast, lunch and dinner

But this isn’t true.

DaanSaaf · 08/08/2022 16:42

A ban isn't enough imo, let's shoot all smokers on sight

Tallulasdancingshoes · 08/08/2022 16:43

I’m in total agreement OP. I absolutely detest the smell of cigarette smoke, it actually makes me feel quite sick. I wish it was banned in all public areas even if they are outside. I know some people will think IABU but I really don’t care. I think they’re unreasonable for smoking near me and my children.

houseonthehill · 08/08/2022 16:43

Tsk. You wanted the indoor spaces all to yourself, and now you want the outdoor areas all to yourself as well. Nah. We've put in the hard yards out there all year round, so it's basically our space. You may join us if you are polite. Otherwise, off you pop back indoors.

Blossomtoes · 08/08/2022 16:44

What isn’t true @Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas?

gamerchick · 08/08/2022 16:44

This is glorious. A council.house thread AND a smoking thread within a few days of each other Grin

have we had the 'im pregnants' and token asthmatics who die and have a funeral at a mere whisp of fag smoke yet?

Love a smoking thread me.

SleeplessInEngland · 08/08/2022 16:50

I don’t care I’ve way of another about it but I expect it will be banned in those areas before long.

Circlesandtriangles · 08/08/2022 16:51

@gamerchick I'm usually only here for the parking threads but that wisp of stinking smoke this morning got me going!

I'm a non-smoker who actually don't mind the smell of cigarette smoke outdoors at all; it really doesn't bother me in the slightest. But I still think smoking in any dining area, even outdoors, is quite inconsiderate - although it doesn't bother me, I think it probably does bother most people and obviously it's not good for people to be breathing second-hand smoke, even outside.

I also think that the less smokers are accommodated, the less socially acceptable it becomes and the less likely people are to do it.

Personally I am more annoyed by dogs when I am eating than by smoke, the cigarette lasts a few minutes whereas the dog is there the whole
time. But that is just me :)

So if there was a dog lying asleep under someone's table in a beer garden, that would annoy you? Do you have a phobia or something that means you can't look at them? I genuinely don't understand how the presence of a still, silent dog in a beer garden would affect you otherwise.

houseonthehill · 08/08/2022 16:54

Into every life a little rain must fall. It's not Novochock.

Breathing in cigarette smoke doesn't cause harm?

In any case, the smokers are the ones choosing to inconvenience everyone else - not the other way around. YABU

How about if someone stands next to you farting repeatedly while you’re eating? Or having a piss? Wouldn’t do you any harm, would it?

Blossomtoes · 08/08/2022 17:15

No, they’re not. They’re smoking where they always smoke. It’s tobacco fascists who invade the smokers’ space who are the inconvenience. Don’t like it? Fuck off back inside where you are for the other nine months of the year.

TeapotTitties · 08/08/2022 17:16

I'm a non smoker

I detest the smell

I think it's downright rude to smoke in front of any non smoker whether they're eating or not.

But I refuse to believe a tiny bit of cigarette smoke in the outside breeze on the odd occasion, is going to do anyone any harm ever, unless they're asthmatic/have COPD.

If that was the case, those people could never leave the house.

LeevMarie · 08/08/2022 17:17

This is satire, right? (Even after 20 years, I still can't understand British sarcasm).
