Smoking in outdoor dining areas should be banned - AIBU?

Sat outside a lovely cafe by the canal in the sun, lovely except for the wafting of some ladies cigarette smoke across the table. i probably am a bit unreasonable but I just hate smoke when eating. Seems a shame that to enjoy outdoor dining I need to suffer smokers second hand smoke. So...

YABU - Suck that second hand smoke up
YANBU - There should be no smoking where food is being enjoyed outdoors

I smoke but I agree. Vaping not so much though. Yes it's not great, but much better than the smell of smoke

Blossomtoes · 08/08/2022 17:15

In any case, the smokers are the ones choosing to inconvenience everyone else - not the other way around

No, they’re not. They’re smoking where they always smoke. It’s tobacco fascists who invade the smokers’ space who are the inconvenience. Don’t like it? Fuck off back inside where you are for the other nine months of the year.

Tobacco fascists 😂😂😂

@BlackForestCake As someone who worked in pubs both before and after the indoor smoking ban, I can attest that people ARE repeatedly farting next to you in a traditional pub setting. At least outside it's masked somewhat by the smoke Wink

SexyLittleNosferatu · 08/08/2022 12:24

You are unreasonable. Smokers have already been forced outside in all weathers. You aren't coming to any harm for the 60 minutes or whatever that you are sat there, you just don't like the smell which to be honest is tough.

Not always true. People like me with serious lung issues can come to harm, and I have done (ended up in hospital with severe respiratory distress after someone lighting up next to me outside in a bus queue, I had nowhere to go if I wanted to get on that bus.)

Op YANBU.

Most irritations like this are solved by unpursing one's lips, unclutching one's pearls, unclenching one's buttocks and thinking 'this is just life, these are just other people, it's ok really.'

TheGraceFace · 08/08/2022 17:28

They have absolutely, no idea, how bad, they smell. Sew their mouths up 😀

A ban isn't enough imo, let's shoot all smokers on sight

You sound delightful 😂

😂😂

I remember after the ban on indoor smoking realising just how bad some pubs smelled. The years of spills, vomit, piss, farts and things that you don't want to think about 😳 maybe this insta makeover of our pubs is a good thing after all!

I'll take a bit of smoke outside

Its vile. They are 100% selfish. Me me me. Never any consideration for others. They may think they are considerate by going over the road for a fag but the bloody stink when coming back. And they chew mint to cover it or spray cheap scent

and that vaping grates on me. My colleague goes out at lunchtime and ive seen her with her filler trout sucking on a pink piece of plastic like there’s no tomorrow. What a mess

Other than being forced outside you could say the same about farting, and no-one would think that was very polite of someone to do while people are eating.

Vile thing to post.

I honestly think I'd rather sit with a smoker than someone who speaks about others like this.

houseonthehill · 08/08/2022 17:38

Surely the MeMeMe sense of entitlement is to decide you are going to plonk yourself down in the area where people are allowed to relax and indulge in a perfectly legal habit and then demand that they adjust their behaviour to your requirements.

Back indoors with you!

MrsDThomas · 08/08/2022 17:40

And smoking isn’t vile?

im past caring what anyone thinks!

Smoking is an absolutely vile addiction.

You however, made yourself sound like a vile person when you described that woman like that.

Well if you're going to be so aggressively misogynistic in your abusing of her, she might as well go back to smoking cigarettes.

Circlesandtriangles · 08/08/2022 16:51

@gamerchick I'm usually only here for the parking threads but that wisp of stinking smoke this morning got me going!

You've made my Mumsnet day man. Cheers Grin

QueSyrahSyrah · 08/08/2022 17:54

I'd rather get a blowback from Boris Johnson than associate with one some of the nasty judgemental personalities on this thread.

thefizz · 08/08/2022 17:59

Some people are just so perfect in every way. Get right back in your clenched arse boxes.😂

Judge not, lest you be judged.

BTW I fear Covid indoors in an establishment than I do smoking by others outdoors.

Threelittlelambs · 08/08/2022 18:00

I think providing a space for smokers away from non smokers would be ideal but impractical for most small businesses.

I think given the smoker has the outdoors all year, you suggest the non smokers get a special area for outside dining.

CapMarvel · 08/08/2022 18:00

Smoking should just be banned full stop.

BellaLab · 08/08/2022 18:00

Lots of restaurants have signs on the outdoor tables saying no smoking but have designated smoking areas away from eating areas.

I remember when smoking was looked on planes - now that was grim.

LeevMarie · 08/08/2022 17:17

The only thing that annoys me is its so effective why aren't they using it for obesity, driving, drinking, gambling.

This is satire, right? (Even after 20 years, I still can't understand British sarcasm).

Nope. Straight up.
