How many slices of toast make up a portion?
I've just had 2 and an easy peeler for breakfast and I'm sat here wondering do I have 2 slices just because the toaster says so.
I suppose some people may have an egg or squashed avocado on a slice of toast, but if you order a full English you inevitably end up with 2. So it's not really about the quantity of additional bits.

Is it one of those things pushed by electric goods manufacturers such as eggs kept in the fridge when they are better off on the side. We have 2 slices because toasters come in 2 or 4 and we are secretly worried that the other side will catch fire if left toastless. Back in the day when we used the grill or even further back with a toasting fork and an open fire did we just have one.

So how many slices is a portion and is my toaster to blame for me being a fat bastard.

Please no competitive undereating though where a quarter slice on the 2nd sunday of the month will do you to Christmas.

2 slices every time.

One with Avocado + egg
or just poached egg on its own.
2nd slice with my home made marmalade.
Fresh coffee.
Perfect!
Yep, 2 slices is my perfect portion!

JenniferBarkley · 03/08/2022 10:46

We do two for adults and one for children in our house. Sometimes I'd just have one with scrambled eggs for lunch if I've been a greedy pig and stuffed my face all morning I'm not that hungry.

Mamamia7962 · 03/08/2022 10:47

I have 2 slices, my husband 4, so I suppose it depends on how big your appetite is. We have a 4 slice toaster with separate controls for each side so can't see how one side could catch fire.

The best toast is on an open fire with a toasting fork, nothing beats that!

usernamenotaccepted · 03/08/2022 10:47

I love toast unhelpful

Mumdiva99 · 03/08/2022 10:48

I've just had a small cooked breakfast and 2 slices of toast.....I am on holiday though.....and i am overweight.
(2 before work with spread, or 1 with an egg.)

ChampagneCharlieIsMyName · 03/08/2022 10:48

I’m a one slice gal, but I have a tiny appetite. I don’t think 2 or 3 slices is unreasonable.

SuperPets · 03/08/2022 10:49

I was going to say 2 is the natural and obvious portion size, but now you have me wondering if that's just due to a lifetime of toaster enforced socialisation.
I'm pondering now. And I want toast

SuperlativeOxymoron · 03/08/2022 10:49

2 slices with jam and a cup of tea here everytime. Doesn't matter if it is a meal or snack.

1 slice for ds (3yrs) as pp said. And even then he'll sometimes only eat half.

Dh on the other hand will have 4 slices.

mynameiscalypso · 03/08/2022 10:50

My toddler would eat 2 for breakfast easily.

Ostryga · 03/08/2022 10:50

I have 1 slice, not because I’m a competitive tiny eater but I never leave enough time in the morning to eat 2.

Weekends I have 2 with bacon and eggs.

recklessgran · 03/08/2022 10:52

Nah. Two at least with Lurpak and marmite. [Even though I'd LOVE four but am overweight so....]

LynneBenfield · 03/08/2022 10:54

I would say 2 is usual.

If you order toast in cafes, hotels or have it in hospital, you get two slices.

I have two at home, as does my husband.

JustTheOneSwan · 03/08/2022 10:54

I'm going to have some toast now.

I think the egg thing is for Americans and egg washers.

TheZenOne22 · 03/08/2022 10:55

If having for breakfast I have 2 slices regardless of whether it’s with eggs, beans, avocado, cheese or jam and peanut butter.

If I’m snacking I’ll have one slice.

I use my grill as I don’t have a toaster.

ScreamingInfidelities · 03/08/2022 10:57

2 slices but I buy a 400g loaf so the slices are smaller (only because a normal 800g loaf doesn’t fit in my freezer drawers without getting squashed)

MyLifeIsFictional · 03/08/2022 10:59

Two is standard but I don't have any if I can help it as it bloats me. Love it though.

PinkButtercups · 03/08/2022 10:59

We all have 2 including DS who's 3. I could easily eat 4 though!

dudsville · 03/08/2022 11:01

Depends. If it's an evening or afternoon treat with marmalade and a up of tea then it can be lexible, one or two. If its a quick breakfast with peanut butter, n butter butter, and with out without fruit then it's two. But if it's a meal with stuff on it then one. This morning I had one, buttered with fish and veggie chilli on top.

PixieLaLa · 03/08/2022 11:02

2 for breakfast and 1 for a snack, really fancy some toast now!

Ifailed · 03/08/2022 11:02

Depends on the bread, 1 slice if I cut if off a decent loaf, 2 if they are cheap sliced-white.

refreshingseahorse · 03/08/2022 11:04

Going against the grain - one slice with an egg for breakfast. Also one slice if its a late night snacking quest. I cut hefty doorstop slices though, so its really two slices but in one chunky slice.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 03/08/2022 11:04

I'd say two but mainly because one isn't enough. I sometimes leave some of the second slice.

easyday · 03/08/2022 11:06

If you order at a café you get two slices. That's a portion.

TibetanTerrah · 03/08/2022 11:09

Toast is too good to only have one slice. Sometime I try and restrain myselfwith one (always heavy handed with the butter!) but end up toasting a second slice after eating the first anyway... more economical to just run the toaster once with two slices in the first place really Wink

FictionalCharacter · 03/08/2022 11:09

Two - I’d still be very hungry after 1
