How many slices of toast make up a portion?
I've just had 2 and an easy peeler for breakfast and I'm sat here wondering do I have 2 slices just because the toaster says so.
I suppose some people may have an egg or squashed avocado on a slice of toast, but if you order a full English you inevitably end up with 2. So it's not really about the quantity of additional bits.

Is it one of those things pushed by electric goods manufacturers such as eggs kept in the fridge when they are better off on the side. We have 2 slices because toasters come in 2 or 4 and we are secretly worried that the other side will catch fire if left toastless. Back in the day when we used the grill or even further back with a toasting fork and an open fire did we just have one.

So how many slices is a portion and is my toaster to blame for me being a fat bastard.

Please no competitive undereating though where a quarter slice on the 2nd sunday of the month will do you to Christmas.

Two for me , one with marmite and one with honey and sea salt

I have 2 slices, my husband 4, so I suppose it depends on how big your appetite is. We have a 4 slice toaster with separate controls for each side so can't see how one side could catch fire.

The best toast is on an open fire with a toasting fork, nothing beats that!

Yes yes yes to the best toast being doorstops of bread toasted on an open fire with a roasting fork! Nothing else compares

flyingant · 03/08/2022 13:57

What's an easy peeler? I just googled it and came up with an orange. I assume you didn't have an orange on toast though?

It is a type of orange that's easy to peel yes. They would've had toast and an orange but not orange on toast iyswim

Idontthink · 03/08/2022 13:58

I live now not back on the back day - if you only want one slice of toast go ahead

Algbu6 · 03/08/2022 14:09

There's nothing to toast really if that's all your having to last till lunch. Currently cutting bread put as I am cutting down but tbh I could easily scoff 4 slices! I don't though

JustTheOneSwan · 03/08/2022 14:22

I've done some science (asked my Dad) and apparently it was only one slice in days of yore because you either did it on the stove or fire with a fork but with the technological advance of the eye level grill it became two slices.
Toast is a superfood here because I'm disorganised and you can toast straight from the freezer.
Also cheese on frozen bread in the airfryer is two slices (heavenly) so I don't think we can blame pop-up toaster manufacturers/Big bread for the portion size.

Comefromaway · 03/08/2022 14:25

Two for breakfast with an egg or baked beans
Three for lunch as above
One with a full English

My husband has orange on toast most days for breakfast. He says it's no different to having marmalade.

TheBatwoman · 03/08/2022 14:25

I’ve always had two but you’ve got me thinking that the sole reason for this is probably because toasters have dictated it. Just shaken my whole world view!

May try to rebel and just have one tomorrow. That might help with losing the baby weight I guess.

Usernumber1squillion · 03/08/2022 17:38

I wonder if 2 slices was more the idea of the sliced bread industry then. The thinner slices leading people into a false sense of security with their 2 slices and then boom hit them with the thick cut.

I am going to stick two fingers up to big bread and only have 1 slice tomorrow see if I feel deprived.

I am dictated to by plate size. Big plate is too big. So I just have one so if fits on the small plate.

StormzyinaTCup · 03/08/2022 20:22

Funnily enough I have just sat down with a cup of tea and a plate of toast for my dinner Blush (it's too hot for cooking although I will probably get a tea sweat on shortly!). I would have max two slices if it was in the morning but three slices works for me if it's for evening consumption. Tonight it's two slices of white with jam and one slice of brown with marmite, if anyone's interested😁.

mumofthreesmallmen3 · 03/08/2022 21:26

I don't think ive actually had one slice of toast, sure they just come in pairs as standard 😁

mumofthreesmallmen3 · 03/08/2022 21:29

I forgot how much I love toast, Marmite and real butter is the top level toast, and haven't had it in too long

Lougle · 03/08/2022 21:37

I don't eat toast now, but when I did the ideal was 2 slices, toasted one at a time. It's a race against time once it's popped.

DelilahBucket · 03/08/2022 21:42

It depends on various factors here. I can't eat processed bread so we have homemade, which is far more filling, however from the days I did eat processed:
Just toast with butter, jam, marmalade etc - 2 slices
Topped with eggs, avocado, salmon or anything else protein based for an average lunch - 1 slice
As per the previous but after exercise (a run in my case) - 2 slices

Now I really want (two) slices of toast and eggs but the only bread I have in the house is a stale end of baguette 😒

Splash the baguette with water, loosely wrap with foil and warm it up in the oven for five minutes.

You can thank me after you've had eggs and a piece of warm, fluffy, crispy baguette.

Picksomethingatrandom · 03/08/2022 21:43

I toast mine on an Aga. No slots. I just toast to appetite. I am underweight at the moment, so I eat as much as I can face. With butter and peanut butter.

Purpleforthewin · 03/08/2022 21:50

2 clearly. What came first, portion size or toaster, I'd say portion size. Toasters were designed with average portion size in mind, 2 for 1 person, 4 for 2.

@JustTheOneSwan

Tell me more about this air fryer cheesy toast... PLEASE!!

starting with which air fryer you have & every step from there in!

please x

JustTheOneSwan · 04/08/2022 06:27

@WinterMusings
this is dangerously easy, don't say I didn't warn you.
two slices from the freezer, quick buttered (easy cos frozen bread, don't need to be thorough) put in cold fryer butter side down.
plonk cheese on top (any and all cheese, especially good for using up odd bits but even a bit of laughing cow)
Press preheat (5 mins 205)
Get fat.
I have hendos on every time but have also tried onions or mushrooms or tomatoes when I'm being fancy. No grater to wash and combined cooking/ prep time of six minutes.
dangerously good.
Our fryer is cosori a basic one but deffo earns its keep.

Piglet89 · 04/08/2022 06:59

There’s a wee girl in my son’s nursery who’s always eating toast when we arrive. She often asks for some more; she’s a toast monster and my spirit animal.

Piglet89 · 04/08/2022 07:00

In answer: normally two slices but I’m trying to low carb at moment (very difficult!)
