How many slices of toast make up a portion?
I've just had 2 and an easy peeler for breakfast and I'm sat here wondering do I have 2 slices just because the toaster says so.
I suppose some people may have an egg or squashed avocado on a slice of toast, but if you order a full English you inevitably end up with 2. So it's not really about the quantity of additional bits.

Is it one of those things pushed by electric goods manufacturers such as eggs kept in the fridge when they are better off on the side. We have 2 slices because toasters come in 2 or 4 and we are secretly worried that the other side will catch fire if left toastless. Back in the day when we used the grill or even further back with a toasting fork and an open fire did we just have one.

So how many slices is a portion and is my toaster to blame for me being a fat bastard.

Please no competitive undereating though where a quarter slice on the 2nd sunday of the month will do you to Christmas.

We have to have 2.

If we do only one, the toaster is so powerful that we end up with none, and the floor gets the toast instead!

georgarina · 03/08/2022 12:19

1, 2, or 4, depending on how hungry I am

1 if it's with an egg or avocado

10HailMarys · 03/08/2022 12:21

Two slices of toast and a piece of fruit for breakfast is totally normal and fine; I don't think people's toasters are making them fat Grin

My mum is always going on about how bread must be fattening because she's put weight on now that she eats more toast than she eats 'proper' meals. I have pointed out to her that it's probably the fact that the huge amount of butter she puts on her toast contains more calories than the toast itself and that this is probably the main culprit but she doesn't believe me because 'It's only butter, that doesn't count'

It's an excellent test of our reaction skills otherwise. Stand and wait for the toaster, keeping a watchful eye, waiting, and waiting, and waiting, then BAM! try and catch it before it lands on the floor!

I had 4 slices with chocolate spread as a snack last night. But I'm a fat bastard at heart 😂

Chocoqueen · 03/08/2022 12:35

2, unless I'm feeling particularly hungry or can't decide on toppings, then I might have 3 to make the decision easier.

Crunchymum · 03/08/2022 12:39

1 with peanut butter for breakfast.

2 if it's for lunch (IE scambled eggs or beans on toast). I know I do it the wrong way round but I am never usually hungry at breakfast whereas I am by lunch time.

gamerchick · 03/08/2022 12:39

1 for me, with a splodge of peanut butter. But have a protien coffee and a banana with it. If it was just toast with butter, it would be 2.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 03/08/2022 12:45

Four. 2 with dairylea, 2 with pate.

lugeforlife · 03/08/2022 12:47

I have 2 if having toast as a meal (my favourite is one slice pnb, one marmalade - one main course one pudding ;))

If I am having it with stuff like eggs or as part of a breakfast then one usually. If it's a small load I have two because that equals one big slice. I will have 2 if hungry.

Dh has 3. 2 not enough, 4 too much. Dd1 has between 1 and 3. Dd2 who eats for a living will look sorrowful at least than 4 but I do try and direct her to some protein by that stage. Ah the joys of hollow legged early teens.

What?? I have never thought of this. Is it a thing?

I almost always have 1 piece of toast and leave the other empty.

Or I’ll cut a bagel in half and then both sides need roasting.

namechange7654 · 03/08/2022 12:48

A sandwich would need 2 slices of bread, ergo 2 slices is a portion. Sometimes I even have 3, with real butter and everything 👍🏻

Wishyfishy · 03/08/2022 12:50

I know it’s lighthearted but I don’t ever think of the toaster as being part of some conspiracy to make us eat more. It would be annoying if it could only toast one piece at a time because often you’re making toast for more than one person.
I don’t feel the need to use all 5 rings on my hob at the same time just because they’re there, same with the toaster.

Goatinthegarden · 03/08/2022 12:50

I hardly ever buy bread because because I’m a toast addict who cannot stop once I start. When I do buy bread, I buy the bakery loaves that are taller in the middle, so depending on where in the loaf I cut the slice from, I might have two, or I might have several.

I bought a mini giraffe baguette the other day and cut it into little round slices. I think I had six or seven….

Mochacino · 03/08/2022 12:55
  1. Incase you need to add cheese or something and a lid is required😂
I love toast. It can be as simple or as formal as you want 😂
PollysPockets · 03/08/2022 12:59

So if it's just with butter or a spread like marmite I would have two slices (DH would have 4)
If it's for breakfast but with something substantial/protein based eg. Eggs or baked beans then I would have one slice BUT if it was the same topping but for lunch time instead I would have two slices 🤷
No idea why, it's just automatic and I've never really thought about it until this thread lol

WaterMeloncholy · 03/08/2022 13:03

1, but we buy a tiger bloomer so it’s 1 massive slice. (Although my 9 month old eats a while slice to himself so I’m probably being very unreasonable)

Whichwhatnow · 03/08/2022 13:03

I don't ever really eat toast just on its own, it's always with egg/avocado/bacon/beans/soup etc. So I'd always just have one slice. If I was having it on its own with just butter and marmite or whatever I imagine I'd need two!

Ah, my toaster doesn’t have an automatic lift so I don’t have this problem.

SudokuMania · 03/08/2022 13:04

When I was younger my friend offered me a slice of toast as she'd cooked two but had only wanted the one.
On questioning why she'd cooked two - it wasn't that the other side would catch fire but the elements would burn out quicker as they had nothing to cook but themselves Confused

TheBestSpoon · 03/08/2022 13:05

Two if it's part of a meal (usually lunch, as cheese on toast or with beans or eggs or a toasted sandwich). Rarely have it otherwise - I prefer porridge or cereal at breakfast. Saying that, now I'm breastfeeding sometimes have a cheeky slice with pate or jam mid morning to keep me going!

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 03/08/2022 13:20

2 if I just have a spread on them like jam or PB. 1 if I have a topping like avo, beans, egg etc

Blackdiame · 03/08/2022 13:23

Jam or butter on toast is 2 slices. Something more substantial like eggs, beans, avocado, tomatoes, mushrooms etc would be 1 slice.

Aokay1 · 03/08/2022 13:26

I have 2 but if I'm particularly hungry I'll have 3. That probably happens 1-2 days a week

SallyWD · 03/08/2022 13:28

I think 2 but it's nothing to do with the toaster. It's simply because 1 seems too little and 3 seems too much! I only have 3 if I'm ravenous.
