How many slices of toast make up a portion?
I've just had 2 and an easy peeler for breakfast and I'm sat here wondering do I have 2 slices just because the toaster says so.
I suppose some people may have an egg or squashed avocado on a slice of toast, but if you order a full English you inevitably end up with 2. So it's not really about the quantity of additional bits.

Is it one of those things pushed by electric goods manufacturers such as eggs kept in the fridge when they are better off on the side. We have 2 slices because toasters come in 2 or 4 and we are secretly worried that the other side will catch fire if left toastless. Back in the day when we used the grill or even further back with a toasting fork and an open fire did we just have one.

So how many slices is a portion and is my toaster to blame for me being a fat bastard.

Please no competitive undereating though where a quarter slice on the 2nd sunday of the month will do you to Christmas.

2 slices of toast.
But if we have a fresh loaf of bread, breakfast becomes one slice of bread - because we cut it about an inch thick!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 03/08/2022 11:16

I only have 1 most of the time but tbh toast is one of the things that can push me into a carb binge. It's a fine old line tbh for me.
Mine has 4 slots too. Have considered removing the bastard but have dh and dd14 who like toast and have self control!

littlepeas · 03/08/2022 11:17

Sometimes just 1, other times 3! It depends how hungry I am and/or what I’m putting on it.

xogossipgirlxo · 03/08/2022 11:20

One if I'm hungry in the evening, otherwise always two.

tealandteal · 03/08/2022 11:25

Depends how hungry I am. One for a snack, usually 2 for breakfast. Sometimes three!

SaltandPepper22 · 03/08/2022 11:31

It’s not that’s simple.

At face value two slices of toast is not an unreasonable portion but whether this is contributing to weight gain depends on:

  • what you have on your toast

  • what you then have for lunch

  • what bread your toast is made from

-If you had two slices of whole meal seeded bread with a very light spread of butter or marg then that sounds fine. Thick white bread with loads of jam however is a lot of empty calories
-If you have two slices of toast for breakfast but then another two slices of bread with a sandwich for lunch then that’s probably too much bread and likely to be contributing to weight gain compared with two slices of toast for breakfast and a salad or soup for lunch.
-if you eat fluffy white bread as toast then it is less likely to fill you up or sustain you leading to more snacking…

Its all about balance, what’s the rest of your diet like?

TeapotTitties · 03/08/2022 11:38

2 is standard here.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 03/08/2022 11:40

Two slices every time. I don't think I've ever just made one slice of toast 🤔

DH could easily eat 6-8 slices!

SarahSissions · 03/08/2022 11:42

Thin sliced or thick?

liveforsummer · 03/08/2022 11:43

I often completely rebel and make the odd number of 3 on my 4 slice toaster - 2 isn't always enough but 4 would be too much!

Lilithslove · 03/08/2022 11:45

I have half a slice of toast and I'm full for 3 days. We've lost sight of what a portion size is these days .....

Not really. I don't eat toast that often but I'd generally have 2 unless I was having loads of other stuff with it or just fancied a small snack.

liveforsummer · 03/08/2022 11:47

Now I really want (two) slices of toast and eggs but the only bread I have in the house is a stale end of baguette 😒

RedRosie · 03/08/2022 11:52

Usually two slices ... But if I only have one I have lashings of butter. As toast is basically a vehicle for proper, top quality, salted butter.

Dasher789 · 03/08/2022 11:56

I'd eat 2 or 3 and then try my best to hold myself back from continuing with half the loaf. Toast and butter mmmm

cherrypiepie · 03/08/2022 11:56

I cut down and now one is standard in our household ima a massive porker though.

Also have either jam or butter and it's
I can't really tell the difference.

Thanks DH for buying bread that is 154 calories a slice though Grin

Some time I have two pieces with an egg for a main meal at dinner time.

Treabrea · 03/08/2022 11:56

Two most days but only one on the two days the kids are off nursery because we usually go to a cafe for a treat!

NeverHadANickname · 03/08/2022 11:56

I sometimes have 2 slices but often have 1 slice with 2 slices worth of butter on it 😁

Thesearmsofmine · 03/08/2022 11:58

2 for me and youngest dc(6) , 3 slices for DH and older dc(9 and 11)

icelollycraving · 03/08/2022 12:00

I often have three pieces. The end slot has a griddle thing in it which I just leave in the other slot.

nex18 · 03/08/2022 12:00

I have 2, there’s also 2 slices of bread in a sandwich, so I feel that 2 is the norm. My ds (16) only has one before school, not enough time for 2!

Dinosaurdrip · 03/08/2022 12:00

I have 3, it seems the perfect amount as I feel like 2 isn't enough and 4 is too much. We have a four slice toaster with controls for each side of 2 but i just leave one empty. I also toast on one of the highest settings or if the kids have used it and left it on a low setting I double dip it because I like it a bit burnt.

AppleBottomRats · 03/08/2022 12:01

I always have one slice. My toaster has a one slice setting so I’m not held at ransom by the toaster 😁
I like toast but I just get bored of eating it if I have more than one slice and I don’t find I’m still hungry.

KatherineJaneway · 03/08/2022 12:11

A portion of toast is 2 slices.

AffIt · 03/08/2022 12:15

It depends - if I'm having something on it, like egg or avocado, then one slice, although the exception to this is beans on toast, when two slices are required.

If it's just toast, though, then yes, two slices.

However, I am now thinking about what a PP said upthread about having been conditioned by my toaster into thinking this is the natural order of things: is this some kind of global conspiracy by Big Bread / Big Toaster?

Am I a toast sheeple?

AffIt · 03/08/2022 12:17

(Also, the more you type the word 'toast', the weirder it starts looking.)
