Lighthearted*

What do you want to say to me?

I do too in the bedroom! It’s fab, although noisy and I’m a bit concerned at how much it costs to run!

Alarae · 18/07/2022 07:23

Bought our portable unit last week.

I wasn't expecting much but it is very useful!

willowglass · 18/07/2022 07:23

How is it vented? Anyone have it vented through a wall? Is it hard to do that? Do the window kits work? Even for awning type openings? I'm sooooo jealous but good for you all the sameSmile

HotAsHades · 18/07/2022 07:24

Nothing, we have too. Nothing fancy, just a couple of portable units for bedrooms and we share for the few nights a year we need the air con but it lets everyone sleep at least.

People have heating for when the temps drop below comfort levels in this country, it always makes me Confused when someone doesn’t put in solutions for the reverse if it’s really uncomfortable for them.

ChagSameachDoreen · 18/07/2022 07:32

I don't think it's particularly uncommon. We have it and all of our neighbours do.

I understand your logic. But I'd argue that for 90% of the time if its hot in the UK, you can generally cool down sufficiently by opening a window. Or maybe having to pop a fan on if it's really hot.

People are moaning about the cost of living and being able to afford heating their homes in winter. Most can't then afford to pay to install and run aircon for a couple of days in the summer.

MollytheTrolleyDolly · 18/07/2022 07:37

You great big softie, OP! We had the air con removed when we moved here because we like being stoical and enduring the heat. In fact I'm going to spend all day in front to the pizza oven to prove we Brits are tough 😁

Breezybarbara · 18/07/2022 08:11

The air con also does heat so when it is cold there is an extra boost to help each room stay at a fixed temperature.

I like the idea of Molly being near the pizza oven. 😆😆

15y ago my elderly ILs loved sitting out in the hottest of weather. Heat warmed their old bones, they said. So it seemed a ridiculous indulgence when they had aircon installed in two rooms in their house. Expensive to run and barely used.

This week we are delighted they have it!

Breezybarbara · 18/07/2022 08:13

To use a couple of days of the year??

Let me introduce you to menopause!
🤣🤣

If you’re talking about a portable unit, so have I. If you’re talking about it being fitted in every room in your house, then I’m jealous !

DangerouslyBored · 18/07/2022 08:18

Odd thread. We also have air con and so do loads of people I know Confused

Would you post a thread telling us all you have heating in the winter, considering many cannot afford it?

Oblomov22 · 18/07/2022 08:20

Us too. Lounge and bedroom. Had it installed years ago. So worth it.

Breezybarbara · 18/07/2022 08:23

Ooh somebody missed the lighthearted memo.

You had best not tell people about food you eat at restaurants then as there are many struggling.

KangarooKenny fitted in rooms 😉

We've had "you paid that for a week or so every year?"
Yes! I'd rather not be uncomfortably hot when the extreme heat is here, even if it is just for a day or 2. We do actually use it more often too, it's nice on days that aren't heatwave-level, but still quite hot.

chiffchaffchiff · 18/07/2022 08:28

DH and I are house hunting and saw a new-ish build that had an air con unit in the main bedroom. I immediately said to DH, "I bet the woman is going through menopause". We have air con in our kitchen. We were doing an extension and replacing everything so it seemed like a good time. It's big enough that in desperate times we can move the table and put an air mattress on the floor. He thought I was mad but he'll be thanking me tonight.

Van34 · 18/07/2022 08:33

We have too! Fitted unit in the kitchen/living room and another in the main bedroom. I currently have a cardigan on because it's a little chilly in here.
Our neighbours have followed suit and are converts. Couldn't live without it now

I want to say.... where do you live? Because I’m coming round. 😅

anybloodyname · 18/07/2022 08:35

Me too ! I'm on my way and bringing my cat !

Pinklimey · 18/07/2022 08:36

I have feet

lochmaree · 18/07/2022 08:39

we have a portable one, it's brilliant! would love fully installed air con system. DH says the portable one costs 30p an hour to run.

But you wanted these reactions OP, otherwise you wouldn’t have bothered posting. You’re on the wind up and you know it.

Also, it’s not special to have air con other people just don’t brag about it like some sort of weird achievement.

Hugasauras · 18/07/2022 08:40

We bought a portable unit during that heatwave a few years ago. It's amazing but it absolutely guzzles electricity, which didn't matter then but definitely does now! So we haven't used it this year at all, but considering using it for next couple of days as we have a four-week-old and don't want our bedroom getting too hot. But then it's going away again before it bankrupts us!

shinynewapple22 · 18/07/2022 08:40

If we keep on getting neutral hot weather in future, it's certainly something I would consider .

However I also read yesterday that aircon contributes towards global warming (something to do with some refrigeration stuff used in it) ..... so makes it seem a bit self perpetuating.

shinynewapple22 · 18/07/2022 08:42

Neutral? Not sure what word I meant to use but it wasn't that! Extra hot weather perhaps
