What do you want to say to me?

Thats great if you need it. We have stone walls and floors so parts of our cottage are pretty cool even on a day like today. Can be a tad chilly in winter though! 😄

Itsbackagain · 18/07/2022 10:24

I have a very old stone house and trees so no need for air con.

Rubyupbeat · 18/07/2022 10:26

We do too, fitted throughout the house, and a swimming pool, don't care that its only used a couple of months through the year, I've never been able to tolerate the heat.

Pyewhacket · 18/07/2022 10:27

We have a few portable units that we've acquired over the last few years. They work quite well and if you keep the windows closed the house stays cool enough.

SunflowerGardens · 18/07/2022 10:28

Is this like one of these tik tok videos 'what would you do if I broke into your house' and then everyone makes a load of videos taking the piss out of you Grin

CecilyP · 18/07/2022 10:30

Doesn’t bother me. I live in Scotland, I have blinds and curtains which I can keep closed so definitely don’t need air-con.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 18/07/2022 10:30

We’ve got it fitted in our south facing bedroom. DH idea when we built an extension. Literally the best idea he has ever had, especially in the time of menopause

No one likes a show off, OP 😉

Me = ☀️ 🥵 🔥 🥵

DontPassMeBy · 18/07/2022 10:38

I'm fine with it as long as you invite me over for a cup of tea. 😏

The property is 7500sq ft so need plenty as the rooms are large.
Not a boast, just explaining why so many units but neither am I ashamed either.

I would love to invite you all. It would be great to have a mumsnet gathering.
Can you imagine? 😆

We have aircon in two rooms too. Can run one of the units entirely on our own solar during the day, tend to only use one at a time as if you combine with other heat tips like curtains shut etc, the temp in the house doesn't rise too much. Obviously solar has an installation cost of its own and not all buildings/houses can accommodate it but aircon doesn't have to be an environmental disaster.

Wheretheskyisblue · 18/07/2022 10:45

We have trees.

I have just put a jumper on as I opened all the windows in the house early this morning to cool it down and because of the shading it is still only up to 17 degrees inside despite being 30 degrees outside.

Much better for the environment than aircon and the best thing is that in the winter when we need the light and heat the trees down't have any leaves so we get lots of sun.

MarshaBradyo · 18/07/2022 10:46

I’m fine and comfortable in the temperature at home, no issue, but air con is a factor in climate issues. I know it’s a downer and all that but that’s what I think on seeing your thread

Herejustforthisone · 18/07/2022 10:47

We have it built in to all bedrooms and the communal living spaces and it’s great. Lifesaving.

chopc · 18/07/2022 10:47

@Breezybarbara I want to ask you about the costs of the product and installation and if you have to have an eyesore outside ?

Breezybarbara · 18/07/2022 10:52

chopc
Happy to Pm and discuss in details.
None of my units are eyesores as it is all in keeping with the property.
There are many types and a decent company will advise what is right for your needs and your property.

They have made life much more comfortable as I can regulate temperature (they do hot and cold) and it makes rooms more comfortable to sleep in.

We don't use them during the day all year round, it is mainly at night and hot weather.
They helped when our boiler broke in winter and we had to wait for a replacement.

@HappyHappyHermit

Our cottage does too!
Instead of air con, buy an old cottage with flagstone floors. It's lovely and cool in ours.

Dolphinnoises · 18/07/2022 10:58

Talk me through how it works with a portable unit. Do you still need to run a heat exhaust outside? And if so you open a window to let it out? But doesn’t that make the air con inefficient?

By 'the property' do you mean your home or offices or something? 'The property' seems a weird way to say my home.

I don't need air con. I'm in the West of Ireland and I think it is meant to get to 29ish today but there is pretty much always a breeze where I am so it always feels cooler.

ferretface · 18/07/2022 11:18

@Dolphinnoises yes you have to vent the exhaust. Most of the portable units come with window adaptor kits that create a kind of tent around the exhaust. Not as effective as a permanently fitted unit would be but they do still cool rooms (some of the units are pretty powerful).

Breezybarbara · 18/07/2022 09:56

Be careful opening windows on the warm side of your house. It draws the heat in.

No shit, Sherlock Hmm

Breezybarbara · 18/07/2022 11:23

Choopi

Yes it is my home.

It's interesting because I could hazard a good guess you wouldn't respond like that to someone you barely knew in person.
If so, you are at best rude and at worst someone that need to hides behind a screen and anonymity to be rude.

oh but I forget, it's the internet so that makes it ok.

My advice was to those saying they are opening all windows and they may not be aware that opening on the warm side of their home may cause more discomfort.
If you are aware, good for you. Crack on.

nope no aircon here but I’m a likeable person and don’t rely on materialistic brags to make me happy 😃
