Is this a bad time to tell you I have air con?

Lighthearted*

What do you want to say to me?

OP posts:

Op what do you think about the environmental impact?

I don’t like air con air as a norm, even when I worked in an office, but purely on climate issues it seems problematic

Hoppinggreen · 18/07/2022 11:34

We have a large portable unit that is currently cooling down the whole house very nicely.
I just popped out to the garage and the door handle was too hot to touch!!!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/07/2022 11:34

My best mate had a recording studio built in his garden last year.

The jammy fucker had the intelligence to pay for full climate control to be installed at the time, so all you hear is a little sighing noise as it steps up.

He's moved into the studio with his wife and cat, leaving his elderly mother with their old portable aircon unit on constantly. His mother is currently texting him grumbling that she's cold and the cat is curled up round the back of the console in a fake fur lined guitar case.

I did mention to him that you can go off people, you know.

We just bought a "portable" unit. Currently set up so the heat exhaust goes out of the cat flap.

Until about mid day I have all my doors and windows open. At that point I close them and turn on the AC. No way am I going to try and cope with 40 degree heat otherwise!

@CeratopsofthePharoahs

what does your cat think of that?

it's a brilliant idea though! It's worth getting a car flap put in if the positioning would work for someone's unit.

RockandRollsuicide · 18/07/2022 11:36

Those who have portabel air con could you say which one please. They are so expensive and reviews patchy.

Merryclaire · 18/07/2022 12:24

What am I doing wrong? Have bought one out of desperation as heavily pregnant. However it is SO loud - even though it’s a well reviewed, supposedly quieter model. I’d say it’s about 10 times louder than our fan.

It’s even noisy outside where it’s venting. I’m worried the neighbours might complain!

It’s also huge and too heavy to move around between rooms. So I’m having to stay in the bedroom most of the day.

Had to turn it off last night as couldn’t sleep with the noise.

Also the hose is massive and the window seal kit is crap so sometimes comes loose.

I shouldn’t complain as it is making the room cool, but all this basically makes it only usable during emergencies like today and tomorrow.

Almost regret spending the money on it!

RedRiverShore2 · 18/07/2022 13:08

The noise, weight and window kit puts me off as in the post above, they weigh about 30kg so not something you can carry up and downstairs, I am quite a heat lover anyway and the house hasn't got above 24 this year, maybe it might get a bit higher later on today but I am is a hotspot, I haven't even got the fan out yet

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 18/07/2022 13:24

I got the

MeacoCool MC Series 10000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner With Cooling & Heating - White - MC10000CH

It is loud but I honestly don't care. My lounge is huge floor to ceiling windows and it gets 31 degrees easily. This air con has been a lifesaver.

There's no moral difference between using energy in winter to heat your house via central heating/heaters/whatever, & using energy in summer to cool your house with AC.

Apart form with AC, you're more likely to have it on in the day, when it's sunny, and the countries solar generation is at its maximum, so it's arguably more environmentally justifiable than heating your house in winter.

Anothernamechangeplease · 18/07/2022 13:41

Enjoy your air con, OP.

I don't feel that we need it. We're in a red warning zone today but have managed to keep the house pleasantly cool, and we have the added bonus of not feeling guilty about the unnecessary use of air con contributing to climate change!

I wouldn’t frame it like that. Increased demand will see increase in contributors to climate issue

Anyway I’m too relaxed in shade in garden to get in to it, It’s a shame if air con use makes things worse but not much I can do except at least enjoy it

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 18/07/2022 22:54

@WinterMusings She doesn't mind, what with being dead for nearly a year. If she was still with us, she'd probably take a massive dump on it, which was her main joy in life in her last years. I miss her, but she was nearly 19.

Spaghetti0 · 18/07/2022 23:08

@BryceQuinlanTheFirst
pleade can i ask what you went for?

FlowerPig · 18/07/2022 23:54

None of my units are eyesores as it is all in keeping with the property.

10 of those units are in keeping with your property? What do you live in, a warehouse?

Glencanto · 19/07/2022 00:42

We have one and I love it. Not just for the hottest of hot days, but it helps me sleep on stuffy nights.

SaltFlakes · 19/07/2022 01:27

I've had air con for years in almost all the rooms. Truly a life changer.

@CeratopsofthePharoahs

Oh I'm sorry to hear she's no longer here. My first cat (my parents had her before me) lived until she was 19, beautiful wee girl.

Most recent two, girlcat would have just squeezed past it if possible or sat at the other nearest door to the garden.making eyes at you until you opened the other door.

boycat was a funny mix, he was bold with people/cats/dogs even, but wimpy with 'stuff'. He'd have gone to the other side of the house & demanded the front door was opened for him!

MeanderingGently · 19/07/2022 06:23

I'd say well done, you lucky thing!
I have two portables for my flat, they work well but don't get the temperature down as low as I would like in this heatwave; however, I'm grateful for them.
But I'd love to have proper non-portable units installed in every room. Sadly I rent so I don't think it's going to be possible....

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/07/2022 06:45

I had aircon fitted in my old house. Sold my portable as no longer needed it.

Then we moved house and now I am sleeping in a furnace 🔥

somewhereovertherain · 19/07/2022 06:56

We live in a barn conversion consistently cool. No need for air con.

Svara · 19/07/2022 07:13

I'm in a well insulated new build so no need for it! Only got to 28 in my west facing living room, hotter upstairs but fine to sleep by the time we went to bed as I'd opened the house up at 9.

SoupDragon · 19/07/2022 07:17

I saw this thread title and assumed it was the rather weird Air Conditioning Troll

SoupDragon · 19/07/2022 07:18

(I only discovered there was such a thing last night - so weird! 😂😂)

takemetomars · 19/07/2022 07:38

Wall fitted unit in the bedroom and in the lounge here at mine. I use it every night in the bedroom, even in winter. Costs pennies to run. It's a game changer- best money I have ever spent on a house

takemetomars · 19/07/2022 07:40

Eatthecake80 · 18/07/2022 09:27

We looked into having one but apparently it costs £33 a day to run?

Not true. We are 2 years in. Costs pennies
