Groupies Wtf

stratocast · 14/07/2022 19:39

My boyfriend's a guitarist and is playing with a group as stand-in. They have GROUPIES. Actual groupies. Women of a certain age (40 ish) who slavishly follow the group from concert to concert, sit at their table to eat (pay for their own food) and literally have their tongues hanging out. Clap feverishly every 5 minutes.

Why? And wtaf?

AIBU to say get a grip girls?

I find @ShirleyPhallus post really offensive. What harm is this intelligent woman doing?

OP sounds like a jealous, judgemental snob.

And no I've never followed any artist or band to any such level. Best bands I've seen ? (All only once) : GreenDay, Keane and The Killers.

So your boyfriend is a stand in guitarist for a tribute act and he has groupies? He and his bandmates should be fucking delighted, not annoyed.

An old school friend of mine goes to nostalgia concerts featuring 80's bands, and gets ridiculously excited being within touching distance of the likes of Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones and people of that era.

They are the real thing, mind you, albeit older, not like your guy who, it seems, is not famous in his own right at all.

This sounds like a stealth boast that your boyfriend is a rockstar. Except he's not.

Not a rockstar thank fuck.

Plays in a jazz/blues group and is doing this as a favour as the guitarist is off sick.

His group has fans but this is another level.

Girl singer but not a single male groupie amongst them. She has a great voice.

"Just seriously amazed that grown women behave like this."

Well then you are ignorant and naieve, surely? Hardly unknown is it?

MichelleScarn · 14/07/2022 20:28

Has anyone else watched Drifters? Thinking of the 'rock band' episode and op will be on stage joining in soon to mark her territory!

Loads of bands have this. The Doors in 1967. The Beatles in 1963. Many bands before them I'm sure. How can you not know this?

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:31

@tomatopsste - can you find pictures of women literally throwing themselves at a band? I've never seen such a thing.

It’s not offensive at all. It’s showing the huge difference between what she’s like at work and what she’s like in her personal life which is totally at odds with one another.

id expect a 17 year old girl to follow One Direction around, standing at the stage door for hours and tweeting them to declare their undying love for the band; not a woman in her 40s.

Its one thing to be a big fan of the music and to go to gigs, festivals etc. It’s another thing entirely to become so obsessed with them personally that you actually want to be a part of their life, which is what lots of these groupies actually want

Same for most people.

I think the woman with the tambourine is ready to give groupies a clout.
Especially the over 35 😠

Money for nothing and chicks for free.

Them groupie girls ain't all they're cracked up to be...

Linnetbirds · 14/07/2022 20:35

I think it’s basically just a hobby for some folk, OP - a bit like how some people buy a season ticket for the footie. It doesn’t sound like they’re actual groupies (read I’m with the Band by Pamela Des Barres and you’ll see why)

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:36

.... some of those blokes that go to footie matches are well into their 40s, screaming and shouting, following the team around.... shameless.

I get the big groups. This is a popular but non-descript cover group. I'd never heard of them before now.

It's the obsession I find difficult to fathom

That was me, Oblomov!
Do you think a 12 seater would be enough?
Shall we have a show of hands?

Summerslam · 14/07/2022 20:40

I read 'My Tragic Love Affair with the Bay City Rollers' by Caroline Sullivan, a woman old enough to know better, who slavishly followed the Bay City Rollers around America, when they were way past their boyband brilliance of the mid 70's.

It's quite a disconcerting read, and these days she would be slapped with a restraining order and branded a stalker. She managed to get into their hotel rooms and took used tissues (ugh), half eaten toast and still warm tea bags as souvenirs.

She did manage to shag one of them in the end though.

Theimpossiblegirl · 14/07/2022 20:40

I went to a gig with someone who did this. She was throwing herself at the lead singer and was apparently quite well known for it. Cringey.

The next time I saw him play, his wife was there and he was dedicating lots of songs to her. Making a point I think.

It is weird for grown women to still be obsessing over pop stars like teenagers. Normally, by the time you’ve exited your 20s you have real stuff going on in your life and the fantasies that consumed you when you were younger, fade. So I’m get it op, I wouldn’t be worried about it, but I see why you’re perplexed. It would be a bit like adults running around with a towel around their shoulders pretending to be Supernan.

This!!

Yeah I can understand tweenagers doing this! It's all new and exciting, and almost understand older less mature teenagers doing it.

But anyone over the age of 20, yeah there is something missing from their lives.

I worked with a woman like that, used to walk in the other direction when I saw her. All she talked about was "her" boys!

Oh do fuck off love, they give no shits about you!

But they are not doing any harm, well except maybe to their families.

But I get you OP, def strange!

But of course this is Mnet and you're sooooo obviously jealous!!

You'll be getting called hard work next OP!

Yodaisawally · 14/07/2022 20:44
