Groupies Wtf

stratocast · 14/07/2022 19:39

My boyfriend's a guitarist and is playing with a group as stand-in. They have GROUPIES. Actual groupies. Women of a certain age (40 ish) who slavishly follow the group from concert to concert, sit at their table to eat (pay for their own food) and literally have their tongues hanging out. Clap feverishly every 5 minutes.

Why? And wtaf?

AIBU to say get a grip girls?

Mate's boyfriend is a 'guitarist' in a band ( his other hobby is cycling). She claims women are throwing themselves at him whereas in reality I think they are just throwing up under the table

Hardly Dave Grohl or whoever

Royalbloo · 14/07/2022 19:58

They're a valuable commodity - and probably find a lot of these gigs? Like locals at the pub, annoying but pay their way!?

Royalbloo · 14/07/2022 19:58

*fund ooops

Are you getting annoyed with these women because it’s easier than admitting you don’t totally trust your boyfriend around them?

Ooooh. Interesting...

A woman I work with is a massive groupie for a late 90s band who have made a recent comeback

It is so weird. She is quite senior, really clever, very sensible and has this secret kind of double life following them around. She follows every one of the band on twitter and tweets them saying how much she loves them, but multiple multiple times. They have individual side projects - one launched a mens clothing brand and she queued for hours to get to meet him and bought some items even though she’s a woman and they were mens things.

They now know her name and she has a relationship with the other groupies, they have their own name for the fan group.

It’s really bizarre. Absolutely understand loving music bands, enjoying going to see them etc but it’s an obsession which seems a bit far.

Not as weird though as someone else I know who had this absolute obsession with Darius from X Factor and used to follow him around in the same way. He’s hardly famous is he!

JaneJeffer · 14/07/2022 20:00

Cover band
So they're just pretending to be groupies then.

UnnecessaryFennel · 14/07/2022 20:00

Are they 'of a certain age' or 'girlies'? Not sure they can be both.

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:00

Dia12 · 14/07/2022 19:56

What relevance is their age? Sounds completely appropriate considering the band members are also around their 40s!!

Obviously, you're not supposed to be fans past 22. At that age you should be at home, crocheting and listening to a nice Val Doonican LP. Literally

MissMaple82 · 14/07/2022 20:01

You sound unbelievably jealous! And massively judgemental

BigDayToday · 14/07/2022 20:01

YABU for 'girlies'.

This is exactly it.

So fans are going to see a band, buying drinks / having food, having a good time - and you see the need to act like they're stood, fanny to the breeze putting their flaps in your boyfriends face?! Jeeeesh, get over it. Nothing like a bit of woman on woman hate!

phishy · 14/07/2022 20:03

Can you stop referring to women as ‘girls’ and ‘girlies’?

And if they’re not having sex with your balding, paunch bellied Dave then they’re not groupies.

Your boyfriend is nowhere as attractive as you think he is.

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:04

Why is it weird, @ShirleyPhallus? Is it her age?
Why not have an enthusiasm for a musician or a band or whoever? What's the harm? I'm guessing she's not actually a groupie, although good luck to her if she is!

The Wurzels

Ooh ah, now yer talkin'

I do hope they do my favorite,
'I've got mangle wurzle in me garden...'

Travis1 · 14/07/2022 20:05

You realise these women you are disparaging are contributing to his pay? And he’s only a stand in? If you trust him so little ask him to give it up. YABU, ageist and a bit of a bitch to be honest

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:05

@MrszClaus 😂😂😂😂😂

People are sneering at the OP, but I do ha e a friend who is a groupie, and it really is tragic on all sides. She follows the band around, has befriended the less famous singer, and has gone back to his room on occasions. Though as she says, with fluttering overexcitement "nothing's happened, and his girlfriend is totally cool with it".

The girlfriend being an ex groupie who replaced the mother of the singer's children, and who probably knows that she'd go the same way if she stopped being "cool with it".

All in all it's so LAME.

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:08

Genuinely, strato what's wrong with their behaviour? They're fans!
Don't fret! (see what I did there...😉)

Not asking him to give it up. Just seriously amazed that grown women behave like this.

This is the reality of life for an international rock star. Not everyone can handle the fame and adulation.

Have you thought about trying cocaine or something? A lot of them seem to do that.

I'm tapping along my friend. OP's boyfriend is the one with the kerchief and tweed waistcoat.
