Groupies Wtf

stratocast · 14/07/2022 19:39

My boyfriend's a guitarist and is playing with a group as stand-in. They have GROUPIES. Actual groupies. Women of a certain age (40 ish) who slavishly follow the group from concert to concert, sit at their table to eat (pay for their own food) and literally have their tongues hanging out. Clap feverishly every 5 minutes.

Why? And wtaf?

AIBU to say get a grip girls?

OP posts:

Why is it sad?
They're enjoying themselves.

MrsMontyD · 17/07/2022 17:45

Maireas · 17/07/2022 17:42

What's the harm, @MrsMontyD ?
They're fans. Where would bands be without fans?
I genuinely cannot see the problem.

I didn't say there was a problem, they seem happy enough.

Quite! Although you did categorise some of the behaviour as "unseemly"?

MrsMontyD · 17/07/2022 17:52

@Maireas It's often unseemly, but harmless.

Thebeastofsleep · 17/07/2022 17:53

I had friends who were groupies of 911 (yep, remember them!) They just absolutely loved them and would follow them around like a fan club, hoping to get a hug or photo with them. Spent £££££s doing it.

I wouldn't say I was groupie but I did used to hang around the stage doors after gigs or the bars I knew the band's would likely have a drink in. I wanted more than a hug and a photo though!

Bllueblazerblack · 17/07/2022 18:00

I wonder if it's the Foo Fighters tribute band.

Well, I think it's great that people have fun, and don't think it's unseemly, so we'll just need to agree to disagree!...
I intend to grow old very disgracefully 😉

I think it's The Wurzels

honkeytonkwoman38 · 17/07/2022 19:28

Would they prefer not to have fans? I'm not sure what the point of your post is? It's either to gloat or to belittle women aged 30-50. Which?

Sparklingbrook · 17/07/2022 19:53

I don't know what to make of them at all. Like Stars in Your Eyes but for bands.

StopStartStop · 17/07/2022 20:01

travelling all over the country to see them, literally planning their holidays around seeing them, even following them abroad.

People are allowed to have hobbies and interests, you know.

Harridance · 17/07/2022 20:05

It's a bit weird at any age but each to their own I guess

Maybe they think 'I have more chance of shagging Paul from Halifax who looks a bit like Dave Grohl if you have 5 pints and squint your eyes a bit, than shagging Dave Grohl himself'.

Sparklingbrook · 17/07/2022 20:42

They are probably right. Lucky old Paul. 😬

BritWifeInUSA · 17/07/2022 21:03

You obviously haven’t been with him very long if 40+ posts in you are still expressing your surprise that musicians have fans. That’s the whole point of touring.

But it makes a nice income for your boyfriend. I bet you don’t object to that part.

If he stays with you, you’ll get used to it.

Sparklingbrook · 17/07/2022 21:11

Sounds like this bunch are a bit more than just fans though.

MorganKitten · 17/07/2022 21:55

If they are having sex with the band they are groupies, just going to shows they are fans.
Groupies are way more chill about it.

I used to spend a lot of time on well known bands tour buses, was a groupie, Rae all were chilled out.

@Summerslam - whole thread was making me laugh, esp your post.

As a teenager I was a huge Bay City Roller fan - about four years ago I went to see 'Les McKeown's Rollers' when I spotted they were playing near where I was on holiday.
I was ridiculously excited when I realised they were sitting at a table in the same restaurant before the show.
Well, amused maybe - I didn't let it put me off of my pizza😂

I feel sorry for Leslie Mckeown's backing band, they are still touring, calling themselves The Legendaries, singing all of the Rollers greatest hits. I'm not sure what audience they are getting, because surely the draw was their lead singer? Stuart Wood still has his version of the Bay City Rollers (he got the name back after Les died).

I love reading about the arguments they had, with Woody calling Les a fat dart's player and Alan and Woody's wife having fisticuffs at the last reunion at T in the Park a few years ago.

There are BCR fan pages on facebook and it's all a bit sad, because their remaining fans are still super obsessed, all these years on.

I think it's reliving teenage years for a lot of people, when life wasn't so complicated and we were all going to marry a Bay City Roller. Well, I was, anyway.

mrsmadiba · 18/07/2022 12:47

I feel like everyone accusing the OP of being jealous and thinking her partner is all that, have entirely missed the point that she said he is depping for the band and not a band member. None of this adulation will be aimed at him specifically and OP sounds like she is aware of that and is just a bit bemused.

anyway, I’m a musician (female) and I must say that it is an amazing feeling when your band picks up a few superfans! I’m in a scene that is very much the opposite of rock n roll so it’s all very innocent and driven by shared passion for the music itself. I am a huge fan of a couple of bigger bands in our genre and have flown to Europe to watch them, meet them backstage etc - no shame whatsoever as I am so passionate about their music. Anyway, as a woman the only attention I ever get off fans is blokes trying to show off their knowledge to me or quizzing me about gear or music theory 🙄😂

Summerslam · 18/07/2022 16:18

There’s a big difference between groupies and super fans though. Super fans love the music as well as the musicians and don’t necessarily want to shag them.

Sparklingbrook · 18/07/2022 16:25

How do you achieve 'superfan' status without turning into a stalker? Grin What's wrong with just being a fan and respecting the music, and the band's personal boundaries? They are just people like anyone else.

Summerslam · 18/07/2022 17:29

I think you can be a super fan without actually being a stalker, as long as you confine your super fan activities to following the band and going to gigs, and not trying to break into their houses or hide in their wheelie bins to get close to them.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 18/07/2022 17:31

I have a friend who does this.

She asked to to join her and her friends but I declined because it is bonkers.

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 18/07/2022 17:32
