My boyfriend's a guitarist and is playing with a group as stand-in. They have GROUPIES. Actual groupies. Women of a certain age (40 ish) who slavishly follow the group from concert to concert, sit at their table to eat (pay for their own food) and literally have their tongues hanging out. Clap feverishly every 5 minutes.

Why? And wtaf?

AIBU to say get a grip girls?

Genuinely, strato what's wrong with their behaviour? They're fans!
Don't fret! (see what I did there...😉)

This is the reality of life for an international rock star. Not everyone can handle the fame and adulation.

Have you thought about trying cocaine or something? A lot of them seem to do that.

Yep

OP is right. It's definitely a thing. Last time my OH was touring, there were the same women at every date following the headliner, hanging around the stage door, reporting back to each other any interactions with him, eating in the same restaurant as the musicians and the crew, posting endless out of focus photos on Facebook. The ringleader is in her 70s and has just been doing the same thing across the US. It's bonkers.

iklboo · 14/07/2022 20:14

It's the slippery slope OP. You'll ask for his Christmas wish list & he'll say

I want a brand new house on an episode of Cribs
And a bathroom I can play baseball in
And a king-size tub, big enough for ten plus me

I'll need a credit card that's got no limit
And a big black jet with a bedroom in it
Gonna join the mile high club at 37, 000 feet

I want a new tour bus full of old guitars
My own star on Hollywood Boulevard
Somewhere between Cher and James Dean is fine for me

I wanna be a rock star.

See? It's mad. I honestly don't get it.

Money for nothing and chicks for free.

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:16

Well, Mick Jagger is a great grandfather and yet still spreading the groupie joy well into his 80s, or however old he is.
You could have years of this!

OldTinHat · 14/07/2022 20:16

Christ, you have issues!

If these 'girls' of a 'certain age' didn't dare throw themselves at your hunk of a partner, then perhaps he wouldn't have an audience and wouldn't earn any money.

Guess you've got to suck it up and know you have the leather trousers and waistcoat all to yourself when he gets home... 🤣

Lanawashington · 14/07/2022 20:16

YABU just for the use of the word girlies🤢

ShirleyPhallus · 14/07/2022 20:16

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:04

Why is it weird, @ShirleyPhallus? Is it her age?
Why not have an enthusiasm for a musician or a band or whoever? What's the harm? I'm guessing she's not actually a groupie, although good luck to her if she is!

Of course it’s weird!!! It’s not real life, she isn’t friends with these people, she is following them around putting all her money and time in to it.

Just seriously amazed that grown women behave like this.

Behave like what? Enjoying live music and a bit of harmless flirting? Shock, horror. How dare they.

What's wrong with being a fan of a group?

Dontwanttoberudeorwastetime · 14/07/2022 20:19

I wouldn’t like this but I know jealousy is a massive flaw in my character.

Gnomechange · 14/07/2022 20:19

I think to be fair to the OP, anyone obsessing about a tribute group and following them around is weird. That is not saying they are throwing themselves at her BF, it is just an odd thing to do.

Oblomov22 · 14/07/2022 20:19

Eh? What are you expecting? Literally every artist or group has a huge fan base, loads of people clapping, some women dribbling. Name me a group who doesn't have this. Get real!

Now, you know women over 28 can't have fun.

Ooooh, Mark Knopfler 🥰

ThreeLittleDots · 14/07/2022 20:22

They're a band's bread and butter. Venues are happy when they sell more drinks, food.. a band with dedicated fans who pay up will be asked back to venues.

They're doing no harm.

Maireas · 14/07/2022 20:22

Anyone else like the sound of these women? Shall we hire a minibus and join them for an evening of debauchery?

Summerslam · 14/07/2022 20:22

So your boyfriend is a stand in guitarist for a tribute act and he has groupies? He and his bandmates should be fucking delighted, not annoyed.

An old school friend of mine goes to nostalgia concerts featuring 80's bands, and gets ridiculously excited being within touching distance of the likes of Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones and people of that era.

They are the real thing, mind you, albeit older, not like your guy who, it seems, is not famous in his own right at all.

This sounds like a stealth boast that your boyfriend is a rockstar. Except he's not.

Easilystartled · 14/07/2022 20:24

It is weird for grown women to still be obsessing over pop stars like teenagers. Normally, by the time you’ve exited your 20s you have real stuff going on in your life and the fantasies that consumed you when you were younger, fade. So I’m get it op, I wouldn’t be worried about it, but I see why you’re perplexed. It would be a bit like adults running around with a towel around their shoulders pretending to be Supernan.
