To think £20 is too much for a window cleaner to charge?

For those of you who have a window cleaner, how much do they charge? We were only £7 or £8 in the past but after getting an extension put on, we got a window cleaner again. It’s a 3 bedroom bungalow, no climbing up ladders required, 9 windows in total. We live in a small town, I would maybe have expected prices in a city to be more. He came while I was in this morning and was there 5 minutes if that. I had no money in the house so was scrambling about trying to find coins up to about a tenner thinking it might be as much as that. He came to the door and said it would be £20. I said ‘how much?’ as I was sure I must have misheard him. £20! I know there’s a cost of living crisis, bills to pay etc but £20 for 5 minutes work.. is this what you’d expect to pay? 😳

Did you not agree how much it would be in advance? I pay more than that for a 3 bed house so don't think its unreasonable, but he does spend more than 5 mins, and cleans down the doors as well.

I would say it also depends on how many other houses he does in your area - in a city he can maybe do several houses in an hour, but in a small town he might need to travel 20 minutes to his next job, so will need to charge more to make it worth his time.

Lovelycheese · 13/07/2022 15:26

I think I've paid a LOT more than that before 🙂
I don't know though but it's not five minutes. It's 30/60 depending on where he's travelling from and then on to. The equipment. Insurance. Blah blah blah.

xogossipgirlxo · 13/07/2022 15:28

£14 for 12 weekly clean. Semi-detached 2 bed house.

Hugasauras · 13/07/2022 15:28

£16 for a four-bed detached.

SquigglePigs · 13/07/2022 15:30

It depends on your area I think. Before we moved 5 years ago we paid around £10-£15 (I can't quite remember) for a 3 bed mid terrace (big bay window at the front + two upstairs windows, big kitchen window and two upstairs windows at the back). Now we're in a two-storey, 5 bed with a conservatory and it costs £35. I think for yours I'd have been expecting something more like what we used to pay.

beepbeep · 13/07/2022 15:31

£40 for a 4 bed detached here 😢

dontblameme · 13/07/2022 15:31

£9 here for a first floor flat in a city. I take it at £20 you won't be asking him back? His loss.

IncompleteSenten · 13/07/2022 15:31

If he's doing 9 windows in 5 minutes he can't be doing a very good job!

I don't think £20 is too much but I'd want my windows looking properly cleaned and dried!

loudbatperson · 13/07/2022 15:31

We pay £20 every four weeks for a three bed semi m, which includes doors and windows. Always very pleased with the job.

AbleCable · 13/07/2022 15:32

I would expect cleaning 9 windows to take more than five minutes. Are you happy with the result?!
You were unreasonable to agree for him to do the job without first fixing the price. I think you were lucky he only charged you 20 pounds - but I don't know the going rate.

I've never used a window cleaner - my windows take me about 10 minutes each to do inside and out - that's sponging the surface dust off, squirting the window cleaner at them and using the squidgee thing to clear it off, and wiping off any remaining smears, and drips from with window cleaning fluid.

MRSAHILL · 13/07/2022 15:33

£6 once a fortnight for a small 3 bed semi. He's also here for about 5 minutes.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/07/2022 15:34

I have 33 windows. The window cleaner jet

BasiliskStare · 13/07/2022 15:34

That does sound cheap to me but maybe ask your neighbours what they pay - He is going have to pay to get there and back and so just the time there isn't all his costs. If it is a good job I would settle on £20 unless your neighbours in similar properties are paying much less. But before all that - is he doing a good job )

gogohmm · 13/07/2022 15:34

£30 here, but we are on a wait list! It's a lucrative business around here

10HailMarys · 13/07/2022 15:34

Our window cleaner charges £6.50! We live in a three-bed semi in a relatively nice suburb of Manchester. It takes him about five or ten minutes to do the lot, I think.

However, he does loads of other houses in our street, so he's not having to drive out on a special trip just to do ours, and he comes every few weeks, so I don't know if he charges people more if it's out of his way or a one-off.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/07/2022 15:35

I have 33 windows. The window cleaner had jet was type equipment. Takes about 30 minutes and charges £20. Has charged the same for years and I'd happily pay £40. Large house.

luckylavender · 13/07/2022 15:35

3/ 4 bed bungalow here, SE. Prices have just gone up to £19 from £17. Monthly

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 13/07/2022 15:36

Have you written this message from 1986?

£20 in the year of our Lord 2022 for the job you've described seems entirely reasonable to me.

Whaaat?! 😧 maybe I should be delighted with £20 for a rough job then 🤣

Was it honestly only 5mins? Did he have one of those mop on a stick things?

DockOTheBay · 13/07/2022 15:40

£20 for a 3 bed semi once every 8 weeks, plus an extra £10 for the conservatory roof every other time. Two people took about 15 minutes and they did a really good job.

We recently moved to a different company. The previous guy charge £20 for the windows and £20 for the conservatory but did a shoddy job and only took about 10 mins (one man)

minou123 · 13/07/2022 15:40

Crikey that really expensive for me

£6.50 for a 2 bed semi, but 7 windows, plus a glass frosted front door.

And I think that is expensive
<sheepishly goes off to apologise to window cleaner>

escapingthecity · 13/07/2022 15:41

In London, four bed terrace with a glazed side return roof, £70 to do it all inside and out. We only get it done about twice a year as a result.

LunaLoveFood · 13/07/2022 15:42

We pay £20 for 12 windows and 2 sets of patio doors.

Justme10 · 13/07/2022 15:43

£5 for 9 windows and patio doors. But he does pretty much the whole street and most of the local area.
