To think £20 is too much for a window cleaner to charge?

For those of you who have a window cleaner, how much do they charge? We were only £7 or £8 in the past but after getting an extension put on, we got a window cleaner again. It’s a 3 bedroom bungalow, no climbing up ladders required, 9 windows in total. We live in a small town, I would maybe have expected prices in a city to be more. He came while I was in this morning and was there 5 minutes if that. I had no money in the house so was scrambling about trying to find coins up to about a tenner thinking it might be as much as that. He came to the door and said it would be £20. I said ‘how much?’ as I was sure I must have misheard him. £20! I know there’s a cost of living crisis, bills to pay etc but £20 for 5 minutes work.. is this what you’d expect to pay? 😳

About 20 windows, a front door, and 2 set of bifold doors in the NW, long pole with running water, no ladders, takes about 40 minutes. He comes once every 2 months and it costs £25.

£24 for a three bed house with a conservatory here, every three months. He cleans the front door and windowsills as well, does a great job. We're in mid-Essex.

However the conservatory roof is insanely expensive, I think they quoted an extra £100 last time I asked. Consequently it is green and covered in moss! Might get it done next spring.

I pay £5 for two bay windows (one up one down) plus a porch, it does seem a bit steep! This is London prices too

alphons · 13/07/2022 15:52

5 minutes?!

What can anyone do in 5 mins?

Doesnt it take one minute to walk around the house? 4 mins, 9 windows, less than 30 seconds per window - that’s not cleaning!

HangOnToYourself · 13/07/2022 15:53

£10 for a 3 bed detached including patio doors. I'm in south Yorkshire

BrioNotBiro · 13/07/2022 15:54

£10 monthly for 5 windows (4 at first floor), plus a bay window, a glass door and a glass Juliet balcony.

Alwayspaintyournails · 13/07/2022 15:56

8 windows plus bifold doors and front door is £10 here.

supadupapupascupa · 13/07/2022 15:56

£20 every 3 weeks for a 3 bed semi with extended kitchen and French doors. They need to climb the flat roof to get to the rear upstairs windows. Worth every penny. When you consider a minimum wage, travel times, weather stopping you work......

PurpleDaisies · 13/07/2022 15:58

£25 for a four bed house with lots of windows.

notanothertakeaway · 13/07/2022 16:00

£25 for 8 windows + a conservatory

Ratched · 13/07/2022 16:00

£8 fortnightly.

4 bed house, 14 windows and 2 sets of patio doors.

Old fashioned bucket of soapy water, a ladder and some cloths. Window cleaner is 70 if he's a day😅

bigbluebus · 13/07/2022 16:01

£20 for a 5 bed detached. He doesn't use a ladder though - it's one of those brush on a pole systems linked to a tank in his van. Takes him 20mins - I'm usually here when he comes.

dutysuite · 13/07/2022 16:02

I was charged £28 for back and front semi detached with side extension. My issues had more to do with the fact I didn’t want to set up a subscription for window cleaning every 3 weeks, my windows don’t need it as I’m set back from the road and don’t really get too dirty in 3 weeks. I do the insides myself.

ColadhSamh · 13/07/2022 16:07

9 windows in 5 minutes? Not physically possible without missing some. I presume that was your perception not you timing him.

Teachertotutor · 13/07/2022 17:34

It's not the price that shocks me but the fact he only spends 5 minutes!! I would have thought a proper job would take him around 20 mins. I pay £30 for a 4 bed semi-detached, and he spends around 45 mins here.

Plantstrees · 13/07/2022 17:41

£35 for a semi on three levels including conservatory but we are in rural South East so prices are high.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/07/2022 17:41

We have to have Spiderman or someone with a brush wash system to clean ours. We also have a glass roof which gets cleaned around 4 times a year. We struggled to get someone reliable, who actually cleaned the windows regularly and did a good job.

Loics · 13/07/2022 17:46

Wow! 5 bedroom detached in rural Yorkshire, all windows and patio doors cleaned for £10, I would find £20 steep for our house!

abblie · 13/07/2022 17:50

My window cleaner does 3 windows a door window and my door for £5 😳

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 13/07/2022 17:51

£7 for a 4 bed house every 4 weeks. Yorkshire, nice area.
im shocked by some of the prices!

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 13/07/2022 17:52

£25 every 8 weeks, SE England, 4 bed with loft conversion. Fancy brushes on poles thing.

ItsDangerousInKingsmarkham · 13/07/2022 17:52

£24 every 6 weeks for our 4 bed semi in Fife. One of those really long poles attached to the van.

I forgot to pay last time so just paid him £48 yesterday 😬

Harridan1981 · 13/07/2022 17:53

We pay 20, but that includes bi-folds, skylights etc. Sounds a lot for what you had done.

Lazypuppy · 13/07/2022 17:54

Did you not agree a price when you booked him in? Ours came round to look at house, said how much it would be then we are booked in for every 6 weeks

Runnerduck34 · 13/07/2022 17:55

I think £20 sounds OK, we pay £16, have 14 windows and 3 glazed doors.it doesn't take him long he has extendable brush on a pole but tbh isn't always thorough.
