To think £20 is too much for a window cleaner to charge?

For those of you who have a window cleaner, how much do they charge? We were only £7 or £8 in the past but after getting an extension put on, we got a window cleaner again. It’s a 3 bedroom bungalow, no climbing up ladders required, 9 windows in total. We live in a small town, I would maybe have expected prices in a city to be more. He came while I was in this morning and was there 5 minutes if that. I had no money in the house so was scrambling about trying to find coins up to about a tenner thinking it might be as much as that. He came to the door and said it would be £20. I said ‘how much?’ as I was sure I must have misheard him. £20! I know there’s a cost of living crisis, bills to pay etc but £20 for 5 minutes work.. is this what you’d expect to pay? 😳

£22 here (5 bed in Hertfordshire). We had someone else round first who quoted £35!

A580Hojas · 13/07/2022 20:27

Totally dumbfounded that anyone can clean 9 windows in less than 5 minutes! How on earth does that happen?

Misty999 · 13/07/2022 20:28

Think I paid £20 a few years ago so sounds about right, we have a bungalow but do have extensions and patio doors.

Amipreg1 · 13/07/2022 20:32

3 bed house plus conservatory-£10 every 4 weeks

Theoldwrinkley · 13/07/2022 20:38

I'd love any of your prices!. I am a lazy cow and hate foing windows so ask chap to do inside and out 5 bed bungalow (no ladders) and its £80, so we only have it done 4 times a year. I thought I was paying a bit over the odds so asked for a quote from another chap who said £120. That's a lot!

Mooloolabababy · 13/07/2022 20:43

We pay £12 for a 3 bed semi with a conservatory and extra windows at the side of the house, East Mids.

catfunk · 13/07/2022 20:47

Depends on area. I pay £12 for 2 front windows.
My mum up north pays £8 for her whole house - 10 windows and French doors

WibblyWobblyLane · 13/07/2022 20:51

£14 here out in the sticks. That's for 19 windows including the velux.

A580Hojas · 13/07/2022 20:53

Don't any of you question these prices?

£8 is less than NMW for 1 hour. Does it really take less than an hour to clean 10 windows and french doors?

I live in a terraced 3 bed house and don't often have the windows cleaned but if I did I'd expect to pay about £30 if not more. I think in terms of hours.

CorpusCallosum · 13/07/2022 20:54

£25 for us, and they can't even reach all the windows. I do it myself!!

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/07/2022 20:56

I pay £20 for a 6 weekly clean, we have 3 stories and some skylights. I think it's reasonable. I'm in Herts.

beastlyslumber · 13/07/2022 20:59

I pay 25 for 5 windows - so a fiver per window! It only takes him 5 minutes, too - or it would if he didn't tell me his life story while he's here.

It's crazy how varied the prices are! I guess window cleaners can set their own fees depending on the area and what people are prepared to pay.

TwiggletLover · 13/07/2022 21:00

We pay £50. 5 bed detached house. Lots of glass including around our patio. I was shocked when we got the quote but it was the cheapest of 3! Starting to think that we're definitely over paying

Scianel · 13/07/2022 21:02

I pay a tenner, four-bed detached. Doesn't take them an hour though, maybe fifteen minutes?

RoscoePeachPie · 13/07/2022 21:05

We pay £100. Four bed house London inner suburbs. Inside & out - takes a couple of hours. But seems were massively overpaying 😳

stayathomegardener · 13/07/2022 21:16

We have a lot of windows including a floor to ceiling run of about 20m
Always did it myself till I got covid in 2020, since then I have paid £80 (once) he used distilled water and a long pole thing, took about half an hour, didn't do a very good job.

Current window cleaner charges £12-£15 takes about 20 minutes, again doesn't do a great job but he's so nice I don't mind.

Always round him up to £20, let him park his car down the drive whilst he does the neighbours and pay theirs too if they are out so he doesn't need to come back for the money.

So grateful to have semi clean windows.

£20 for 5 minutes is ridiculous.

tiredanddangerous · 13/07/2022 21:19

£35 for a 4 bed semi on 3 levels here. We
get them done quarterly.

User48751490 · 13/07/2022 21:19

£7. 4 bed terraced. He does most of the surrounding streets.

FangsForTheMemory · 13/07/2022 21:21

£15 for a two-bedroomed terrace with a conservatory.

fishonabicycle · 13/07/2022 21:21

It was £17 in Tunbridge Wells, we moved to east Sussex last year and was quoted £35 for a very small cottage. Fortunately found a chap who does it for cash for £15.

brown543 · 13/07/2022 21:23

£90 for 5 bedroom house, near London. I've just swapped to one that uses a pole but doesn't dry, he charges £55.

brown543 · 13/07/2022 21:24

(Outside only)

LakieLady · 13/07/2022 21:26

Small town in the SE. £15 for a two-bed semi. He does it with a brush on a hose and a long pole to reach the upstairs, so no ladders.

StarDolphins · 13/07/2022 21:26

I have a small semi - mine cleans set of french doors, front door & 4 windows using modern jet type things where he stands in the floor & it reaches up & its £5

Norugratsatall · 13/07/2022 22:05

I pay £15 for a large 4 bedroomed house. About 20 windows (2 he can't reach). If he does the conservatory too it's £25. I'm in the SE.
