To think £20 is too much for a window cleaner to charge?

For those of you who have a window cleaner, how much do they charge? We were only £7 or £8 in the past but after getting an extension put on, we got a window cleaner again. It’s a 3 bedroom bungalow, no climbing up ladders required, 9 windows in total. We live in a small town, I would maybe have expected prices in a city to be more. He came while I was in this morning and was there 5 minutes if that. I had no money in the house so was scrambling about trying to find coins up to about a tenner thinking it might be as much as that. He came to the door and said it would be £20. I said ‘how much?’ as I was sure I must have misheard him. £20! I know there’s a cost of living crisis, bills to pay etc but £20 for 5 minutes work.. is this what you’d expect to pay? 😳

4 bed detached, up north, £20 every 6 weeks

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 22:11

We pay £10 for ten windows, we think it’s far too cheap but he won’t take any more.

Have you written this message from 1986?

£20 in the year of our Lord 2022 for the job you've described seems entirely reasonable to me.

Haaaaaaaa haha. Amen

caringcarer · 13/07/2022 22:24

I only have mine every 12 weeks. He can only get access to 7 and charges £14. He spends about 20 mins and wipes down 2 bedroom window sills and front door. I am cutting back but will keep him on providing his prices don't increase.

Abcdefu · 13/07/2022 22:28

£6 bi monthly,19 windows + patio doors

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 13/07/2022 22:49

Before I moved last year it was £7 for 10 windows, 2 doors and a set of patio sliding doors.

Where I live now it's £10 just for 10 windows. He does a very quick job plus he's damaged planters & trampled plants etc recently. We only have him because the other 4 houses do and he has to come into our property anyway to do the next door neighbour's back windows.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 13/07/2022 23:14

£25 for 4 bed detached - 14 windows.

Dilemmaemmaaa · 13/07/2022 23:30

@Hotinnit yeah just a stick and a hose, im not convinced he even squeejeed them after and my door is still dirty from the building work but it hasn’t been touched

@A580Hojas I didn’t watch him go round them but I’m guess some just got a very light wipe down on the way past with his thing on a stick

We pay £20 every six weeks for a three bed semi - extended so about nine windows ish in total? They do doors as well and it always looks clean

zaffa · 13/07/2022 23:37

Ours has a proper set up though with a stick that squirts water and then it dries without streaks so he doesn't need to squeegee it

Dilemmaemmaaa · 13/07/2022 23:38

@Teachertotutor I think that’s the annoying thing, if he looked like he was putting some effort in I wouldn’t grudge the £20 but it was the slap dash hose of each window then rattling the door for the £20 🙈 I honestly thought he was joking when I was imagining maybe £9/10 at a push. When we had him years ago we had a birds nest beside a window so it had bird shit on the glass. It stayed there for months even though I’d come home from work to his card saying he’d been 🤦🏼‍♀️

£8 for a 2 bed terraced house in London. Only here about 10 mins but does a good job. Front windows only usually as you have to walk through our house to get to the garden.

Musicalmaestro · 14/07/2022 05:33

I’d get another window cleaner if I were you, you don’t sound happy with his standard of work.
I pay £18 which I’m happy with.

A580Hojas · 14/07/2022 07:07

I'm honestly astonished that anyone would be willing to clean 19 windows plus patio doors for £6. They must be desperate.

Clevs · 14/07/2022 07:32

£16 for a 3 bed house with conservatory.

LadyJaneHall · 14/07/2022 09:04

I'm amazed how little some people pay. I pay £18 for the front of my 3 bed house. If I want the back done as well, it is double. I paid the same at my previous house so no price increase for a long time. He is pleasant and friendly, will clean out the gutters for less than I've paid previously so no complaints here.
I also cannot believe that 9 windows could be done in five minutes.

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 14/07/2022 09:08

£60 for house and cottage annexe windows. There are a lot of windows, a lot of glass in parts due to oak frames so I don’t mind paying it. Usually get it done every 4-6 weeks depending.

drpet49 · 14/07/2022 09:13

5 minutes? Shoddy job and I certainly wouldn’t pay £20!

MidnightMeltdown · 14/07/2022 09:30

I paid £15 recently for a 3 bed semi. I wouldn't have minded if my windows were sparkling clean, but he used one of those long brush things, and there were still some marks on the windows after he'd left. I won't be using him again...

ShipwreckSunset · 14/07/2022 16:06

Think we are totally overpaying at £30 for a 4 bed, 18 windows. But I did get a quote more recently and it was higher so I guess it varies by area. Yet another one of those things that seem to be disproportionately higher in south east!

Yodaisawally · 14/07/2022 16:08

We pay £10, he doesn't do the back of the house so that's 6 windows and front door
