To think £20 is too much for a window cleaner to charge?

For those of you who have a window cleaner, how much do they charge? We were only £7 or £8 in the past but after getting an extension put on, we got a window cleaner again. It’s a 3 bedroom bungalow, no climbing up ladders required, 9 windows in total. We live in a small town, I would maybe have expected prices in a city to be more. He came while I was in this morning and was there 5 minutes if that. I had no money in the house so was scrambling about trying to find coins up to about a tenner thinking it might be as much as that. He came to the door and said it would be £20. I said ‘how much?’ as I was sure I must have misheard him. £20! I know there’s a cost of living crisis, bills to pay etc but £20 for 5 minutes work.. is this what you’d expect to pay? 😳

I do the accounts for a residential home and their window cleaner only charges £40. I think you're being ripped off.

Bluebuddha10 · 13/07/2022 17:56

Wow that sounds a lot OP. I pay 5 quid roughly every fortnight, for 11 windows , terraced house.

Notarealmeatnotarealmeat · 13/07/2022 17:56

£5 here every other month. Does most of the street and we're mid terrace so only two bay windows for him to do. Takes him around 6 mind I'd say.

Blossomandbee · 13/07/2022 17:59

I pay £16 for a 3 bed detached. They do most of our road so aren't coming specially for us. They use the long handled brushes and some solution that they slap on and it dries clear, so no climbing ladders or scrubbing. It does the job but I wouldn't pay more unless they were cleaning the frames and being more thorough.

deedledeedledum · 13/07/2022 18:02

9 windows. Less than 5 mins. That's about 30 sec a window. I smell an exaggeration

sueelleker · 13/07/2022 19:30

We have 9 windows and 2 half glazed doors. He charges £10. Last time I asked if he could remove some grass from the guttering while he was up there-he didn't charge me anything for that.

Babdoc · 13/07/2022 19:40

I have a 4 bed, 2 storey detached house with floor to ceiling glass in the living room and several glass external doors.
My window cleaner has charged £5.50 for about the last 10 years. He said he tried to put it up to £6 a while ago, but his customers refused to pay it or told him to cut his visits to once a month. I took pity on him with the current inflation/cost of living rise, so I have unilaterally put his pay up to £7. He is v grateful, but I feel even £7 is a bit on the mean side!

MarshaBradyo · 13/07/2022 19:42

These sound cheap £40 to £45 here - 4 bed three levels

Moonchair1 · 13/07/2022 19:49

2 bed house here.. 8 windows and it’s £6

9 windows in 5 minutes? Not physically possible without missing some. I presume that was your perception not you timing him.

Agree with this, no way was he there for literally 5 minutes talk about over egging the pudding.

Tumbleweed101 · 13/07/2022 19:54

£14 for three bed semi. He does a proper job, going up ladder for upstairs and cleaning frames and sills.

I feel really sorry for your window cleaner, he’s the one being ripped off by his customers, poor bloke, and yes £7 for what you have listed is mean. Does he doff his cap to you with his gratitude?

Dahliasrule · 13/07/2022 19:56

Oh my goodness we are underpaying. 9 windows, a patio door and a conservatory,
We we’re paying ten pounds but I put it up to 12 without him asking. He uses one of those lances. We have had him for years.

TattiePants · 13/07/2022 19:57

I pay £20 every 4 weeks but I have a lot of big windows.

ThinWomansBrain · 13/07/2022 19:58

If he does that in 5minutes sounds expensive - but if he does a decent job it sounds reasonable.

His busieness, he decides what he is charging - more you fool you for not agreeing the price in advance.

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 13/07/2022 19:58

£11 here - townhouse so 3 floors. 10 windows plus front and back doors. Some of these prices are crazy, maybe I’m in the wrong job!

AliTheMinx · 13/07/2022 20:00

We pay £24 for a 3 storey detached (no conservatory). We're in a small town.

Justwingingit2005 · 13/07/2022 20:00

I pay £8 for for 10 windows, some large windows, 2 doors and a conservatory. Weve been in our house since 2005 and it's always been £8! I was chatting to him about a month ago when he was last here and he said customers are cancelling him due to the cost of living

PinkButtercups · 13/07/2022 20:02

£13 for a 2 bed flat. 14 windows.

StoneofDestiny · 13/07/2022 20:03

Depends where you live. I found my bill climbed X3 when I moved from a north of england city to a village in the south midlands. I've moved around the UK and the prices change. Urban to rural makes a big difference.

Daisytomhope · 13/07/2022 20:06

£7 for 12 Windows. Semi detached house with ground floor extension. Every 4 weeks.

BettyBootsie · 13/07/2022 20:09

To me £20 sounds absolutely ridiculous. Mine charges £5 and does nearly all the houses on the street (all small) once a fortnight. He uses a brush on an extendable rod which shoots out cold water, so no climbing of ladders and also no drying off the windows afterwards. They are left to just air dry so always a bit streaky. Takes maybe a minute or so to do each side of the house - not worth more than £5 for that!

Jalisco · 13/07/2022 20:12

Detached 3 bed bungalow type cottage with conservatory. £6 every six weeks.

SarahSissions · 13/07/2022 20:15

Don’t pay it and do your own windows. If you can’t the jobs obviously not that easy

toooldtocarewhoknows · 13/07/2022 20:22

Mine is £25! That's been the same for all three we've had in the last five years.
