As the title says.

We will have a new PM and the decision on who it is will ultimately reside with CP members.

I would rather this wasn't a political thread in the sense of Conservative/Labour/LidDem/Green etc.

I'm simply very interested to understand the direction of travel here for party members and would ask that people posting respect that and don't pounce on party members who post.

For reference I'm not a party member, but my uncle is and in his constituency he's saying it's a run off between Sunak, Mordant and Badenoch in terms of local support.

Yes I am a party member and I will vote Rishi

ChrisS36 · 12/07/2022 20:02

Second part of your question I ask myself this person was leader would they win a general election. Ultimately that’s all that matters.

user1497207191 · 12/07/2022 20:04

I'm a party member and will vote for whoever stands against Rishi. I know someone who committed suicide due to lack of covid support and others who lost their homes and/or their businesses. He lied his way out of the criticism at the time by implying those excluded were tax evaders or fraudsters. I'll never forgive him for trying to weasel himself out of the deliberate and illogical/unfair policy decisions he made which did untold harm to millions!

BreadInCaptivity · 12/07/2022 20:10

Thank you very much for your responses.

I'm really sorry you experienced that.

Not a party member but feel that is going to be either Sunak or Truss. I like Mordaunt and Hunt but they don't have enough recent experience of cabinet level jobs. Surprised that Javid pulled out, I thought he'd be quite a strong candidate.

So, looks like the Tories will have another pm who isn't a white man. Unlike labour.

gryilla · 12/07/2022 20:39

Find it hard to trust Rishi - he's untested and too linked to Boris, not in a "I'm worried he's corrupt" sense but more in a "I can't tell what he stands for as his actions don't line up with his words". His biggest achievement (furlough) enabled a policy I still find reprehensible and unconservative (lockdown). He might not have had a choice, but also I find it hard to give him points for doing something that so greatly increased his own personal popularity. But I think he will be in final 2 and overall I'm okay/neutral on him as PM even if I don't vote for him in the ballot.

Really liked Sajid (now out) and Kemi. My whole association has always liked Kemi but even we are surprised at her popularity in the polls already. Glad she is standing and hope she gets a good ministry at least. I think she stands for conservative values of hard work and self-determination. I also find it easy to tell what Liz Truss stands for and I like her vision of global Britain (I'm a non-EU immigrant) but think I'm a minority in my association for liking her!

Penny's TWAW stance concerns me. She is experienced and would probably make an okay PM but if she won I would step up my efforts within the party to make sure that didn't become policy.

Please name any previous Tory PM's who were not 'white'?

Margaret Thatcher
Teresa May

Neither of those are white men

crowsfeet57 · 12/07/2022 20:46

Tom Tugendhat is untainted by partygate and has the mettle to be a good prime minister.

ofwarren · 12/07/2022 20:54

Kemi for me
Suella if not
Truss if none of those two are in the last 2.
Never Penny Mordaunt

balalake · 12/07/2022 20:58

Benjamin Disraeli came from a Jewish family, so you could argue he was from a minority background.

CalistoNoSolo · 12/07/2022 21:01

They are all appalling, with the possible exception of Tugendhat. I don't think any of them have the intelligence or attention to detail to cope with Ukraine, inflation, wage stagnation, climate change, the shitshow that is Brexit etc, etc, etc. The tory party used to have some excellent ministers but the current lot are scarily inept.

Scautish · 12/07/2022 21:01

@ofwarren

you support a candidate who says the UK spends too much on welfare???

i want the candidate who is least likely to include Rees-Mogg, Dorries and Truss in their cabinet. All three are the epitome of evil who would see the weakest in society rot. Same goes for Priti Patel but at least she’s withdrawn.

liliainterfrutices · 12/07/2022 21:05

I’d probably have preferred Penny Mordaunt, but using Jo Cox in her video was a disgusting move.
probably Tom Tugendhat.
They all seem pretty dreadful to me. Braverman seems the worst.

BreadInCaptivity · 12/07/2022 21:10

So far I'm not feeling a lot of love for any candidate.

My Uncle says there is no clear winner in his local party and whilst they think Sunak can cut it as PM there is a worry how he will play to the electorate.

OP posts:
Glencanto · 12/07/2022 21:10

Agree that Braverman is the worst. Probably the only one that would be a downgrade on Boris.

BreadInCaptivity · 12/07/2022 21:12

Sorry don't mean to be rude, but if you post can you confirm if you're a party member or not please.

I am not asking other people not to post (respectfully) but the point of the thread was to gauge the thinking of party members, so if you are not, please also state that.

Thank you.

Why Suella?

I know a lot about her personally and she's a self serving bully who goes through staff like clean underwear.

She also is against welfare state to support those who need it. Completely backed up by the fact she doesn't ever go anywhere near the areas of deprivation in our constituency - not even at election time.

DianaBarry5 · 12/07/2022 21:14

Is a billionaire prime minister a good idea????

I'm beginning to think none of the ones running are expect perhaps Tugenhat.

Not a member.

ShandaLear · 12/07/2022 21:19

It is a very weak line up. There are none that I can actually see as a convincing PM with the possible exception of Hunt who has held senior cabinet posts in the past, but he IS the past, and a remainer (which I applaud but recognise it’s an unpopular view across conservative voters) so he’s tainted by that. It’s a shame there’s nobody of the stature of Clarke or Heseltine - no big hitters. They all feel like a pile of also rans.

CactusBlossom · 12/07/2022 21:20
