As the title says.

We will have a new PM and the decision on who it is will ultimately reside with CP members.

I would rather this wasn't a political thread in the sense of Conservative/Labour/LidDem/Green etc.

I'm simply very interested to understand the direction of travel here for party members and would ask that people posting respect that and don't pounce on party members who post.

For reference I'm not a party member, but my uncle is and in his constituency he's saying it's a run off between Sunak, Mordant and Badenoch in terms of local support.

Not a member but tempted to join to vote for Kemi Badenoch. The current line up really put Labour to shame in terms of making them look stupid and hypocritical. The party that’s accused of racism puts up more diverse candidates than Labour could even dream of.

And if Kemi was the next PM, Labour would have absolutely no idea where to hide. She is inexperienced, but an eloquent public speaker, comes across as no-nonsense and would rip to shreds the sad Labour front bench.

To have a vote this time, you have to have already joined by 3 June 2022.

Yes I am, so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

No need to be rude.

You could have simply stated it as politely requested.

Ah I see. They must be trying to prevent non-Tories from joining and sabotaging the result by voting for one of the atrocious options, like Jeremy Hunt or someone.

AquaVite · 13/07/2022 00:56

I gather that research indicates that more than half of party member votes will be coming from white males, over the age of 60, residing in southern England.

So there's that.

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 00:57

Not a member but married to one. A member who wanted Ben Wallace and who’s really struggling now. He thinks it’s a ridiculous time to even think about tax cuts and the deportation to Rwanda sickens him. Yesterday he muttered “I suppose it’s fucking Sunak then”.

Tr1skel1on · 13/07/2022 00:59

I would never vote for a Tory, but Kemi would get my vote of I had to. Will never forgive them for ignoring Rory Stewart, he actually knows his stuff, his book, the Places in Between should be required reading for anyone wanting to know more about Afghanistan and how we ended up where we are

AquaVite · 13/07/2022 01:02

Ben Wallace would have been the best candidate, imo. It is a loss for the party and country that he withdrew. There are so few competent, barely employable people in that cabinet.

Just as a matter of interest, the Rwanda deportations are indeed sickening. Is it enough to stop your DH from voting Tory in the next GE?

Ooh, as someone with a love of politics, I'd just love to see Kemi against Angela at PMQs

Sloebluewalls · 13/07/2022 01:09

Kemi would have my vote BUT I worry that the social care crisis wouldn’t be tackled due to cutting back. Social care is in serious crisis - retention, recruitment, poor pay yet high levels of training, responsibility and regulations.

Kemi for me
Suella if not
Truss if none of those two are in the last 2.
Never Penny Mordaunt

Tory vice-chair Kemi Badenoch admits hacking Labour MP's website
The Saffron Walden MP, a rising star, is apologising for accessing the website and changing it to "say nice things about Tories".

She was 28 at the time, so hardly a pranking teenager.

Sloebluewalls · 13/07/2022 01:14

I’d HATE to see Penny Rishi Suella and Tom as PM. I’m a floating voter anyway

kemi is the only one I’d like to see as PM. Totally fresh start and would give Labour a run for their dish

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 01:17

Is it enough to stop your DH from voting Tory in the next GE?

Sadly not. However they weigh the Tory votes here so his won’t make any difference. Of course my Labour one won’t either.

liliainterfrutices · 13/07/2022 01:42

Badenoch hacked Harriet Harman’s website and Harman kindly didn’t press charges.
she wants to cut support staff and extracurricular activities in schools. She seems absolutely dreadful to me.

MintJulia · 13/07/2022 02:39

Tom T. or Kemi.

Definitely not Penny Mordaunt

Not a party member

Scurryfunge12 · 13/07/2022 03:36

All of them appear to have repugnant values. Suella is an awful human being. Trying to leave the ECHR is a fascist move, and her ideas surrounding the welfare state are also appalling.

I’m not a Tory voter anyway, but this is definitely the worst government I have ever experienced and I’m genuinely worried for the country whichever gets the job. They are all rotten, frankly.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 13/07/2022 04:20

Not a party member. But I am a floating voter and have voted for all three of the major parties at different times.

Mordaunt - hell, no. I know she is backpedaling on TWAW but I do not trust her integrity based on her previous statements and current position. I will never vote for her or the Conservatives under her.

Tugdenhat - well, he is wrong, personally, I think a lot of votes will be won or lost on women’s rights (or trans issues as he likes to call them) but he is an option. Being ex-army is part of that.

Badenoch - only recently became aware of her and I really like what I see. Smart and articulate. Knows what a woman is. If she is the Tory leader, Labour is screwed.

Truss - meh. No strong feelings either way.

Hunt - I think he is a divisive character based on being health secretary so I can’t see the party voting for him because they fear he will lose an election. That is probably unfair because I think he deserves more credit than he gets. He didn’t destroy the NHS, it is eating itself instead.

Sunak - highest profile. Is he more spin than substance? Not sure. Jury is still out.

Zahawi - I don’t think so. I hate to say this but it is more of a gut feeling than based on any knowledge of him or his policies.

Braverman - I like her more and more. But I also don’t know a great deal about her. Unknown quantities are a little off putting. Maybe with profile boost?

I guess for me it would be Badenoch or Braverman or Tugendhat.

WinterMusings · 13/07/2022 04:25

crowsfeet57 · 12/07/2022 20:46

Tom Tugendhat is untainted by partygate and has the mettle to be a good prime minister.

I don't know much about him, so maybe that explains it, but so far his is the only name that doesn't fill me with dread.

(not a party member)

WinterMusings · 13/07/2022 04:32

DianaBarry5 · 12/07/2022 21:14

Is a billionaire prime minister a good idea????

Absolutely not. He's so far out of touch with the everyday person's life he just has NO idea. He's sneery. I shan't continue, but it would be a grave mistake.

@Blossomtoes

Curious to know why he thinks TomT isn't a better option than Sunak,

Ilovecheesetoasties · 13/07/2022 05:56

I am a party member. I would like to see Tugenhat and Badenoch in the final two. I would be delighted to vote for either of them. I think Tugenhat would be the better leader, and leadership is what is desperately needed now.

I can’t decide how I feel about Rishi. On one hand I think he’s right that difficult decisions do need to be taken and that government does need to be honest with the electorate that we can’t have low taxes and a state that does everything we want it to. On the other hand, I think that he has lived a life if such privilege that he simply doesn’t understand the reality of many peoples lives.

Difficult.

knittingaddict · 13/07/2022 06:16

Not a member but I hope Mordaunt doesn't end up winning. I think it will be the end for the Tory party at this time. What we really don't need is a PM who lacks honesty and discernment. Has the party learnt nothing?

This country needs two strong viable political parties and I'm not even slightly convinced by either.

WildFlowerBees · 13/07/2022 06:24

Not a party member, friends of ours are and they're quite despondent.

I hope it's not Rishi, his resignation came far too late to make him look like he was 'doing the right thing' as if the public are blind and/or stupid.

All candidates are your typical wealthy and clueless types we really do need a pm who shows empathy and more understanding of those much less fortunate which is most people!

Itdoesntreallymatter · 13/07/2022 06:26

user1497207191 · 12/07/2022 20:04

I'm a party member and will vote for whoever stands against Rishi. I know someone who committed suicide due to lack of covid support and others who lost their homes and/or their businesses. He lied his way out of the criticism at the time by implying those excluded were tax evaders or fraudsters. I'll never forgive him for trying to weasel himself out of the deliberate and illogical/unfair policy decisions he made which did untold harm to millions!

Glad to hear this. He was a terrible chancellor. I appreciate it was a difficult time and you can't introduce complicated policies in a pandemic, but there was too much QE and he gave billions to fraudsters and damaged people's livelihoods by not helping people who really needed it. The help should have been more targeted. Now there is very little help with the aftermath of the pandemic including the effects of the QE. People will soon realise the damage he's done in the winter when things get really bad. The fact that people are saying more financial help = more inflation shows that his strategies have backed us into a lose-lose situation economically. Terrible choice for most of the country and working and middle classes. Great choice for millionaires most likely.

I personally think this leadership contest will be like watching an episode of Ozark where all the characters in it are clones of Wendy.

Whatever happens, with the country spiralling downwards, you know that the new PM will be a woman! They always seem to inherit an utter mess.
