As the title says.

We will have a new PM and the decision on who it is will ultimately reside with CP members.

I would rather this wasn't a political thread in the sense of Conservative/Labour/LidDem/Green etc.

I'm simply very interested to understand the direction of travel here for party members and would ask that people posting respect that and don't pounce on party members who post.

For reference I'm not a party member, but my uncle is and in his constituency he's saying it's a run off between Sunak, Mordant and Badenoch in terms of local support.

@ofwarren

you support a candidate who says the UK spends too much on welfare???

i want the candidate who is least likely to include Rees-Mogg, Dorries and Truss in their cabinet. All three are the epitome of evil who would see the weakest in society rot. Same goes for Priti Patel but at least she’s withdrawn.

This 100% .Shockingly all the candidates agree with sending immigrants to Rawanda…I personally will never vote for a government with such appalling values !

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2022 22:36

I’m really interested in this thread though I have no skin in the game. Quite the opposite in fact (Labour Party member). But I assumed Rishi was a shoein (how do you spell that?!) and supposed he was super popular. Apparently not. I was especially interested in @user1497207191 ’s comments as I was one of the supposed tax dodging (I wish!) small business owners who were overlooked in the pandemic too.

Kidsaretryingtodestroyme · 12/07/2022 22:49

Interesting topic. I’m not a member. If I had to pigeonhole myself it would be Blairite and I can’t abide the current government. However, my friendship group is broad and I do know a member and surprisingly Kemi is looking good. I think she’s seen as a genuine Conservative. She’s quite admired. I don’t think she’ll win but I think she’ll end up with a strong cabinet position.

BreadInCaptivity · 12/07/2022 22:56

Please can I just re-iterate the request to state if you are a party member (or not) in any posts on the thread.

Otherwise it makes the thread pointless as it becomes a general opinion thread rather than an insight into what I was hoping to seek into the thoughts of the membership.

I'm not asking non-members not to comment, but to declare your status as it were.

Thank you.

I'm a member and will vote for Penny Mordaunt.

Thanks for your response.

Can I ask why she is your preferred candidate.

I have a major problem with all of the candidates. I have been a lifelong tory voter but when Boris came on the scene, No!, just No! It didn’t need anyone clever to know what a complete balls up it was going to be. It has been a disaster from start to finish. Corrupt, dishonest, disgraceful, and with long reaching consequences. We will be paying for this government’s. incompetence for many years to come.
In my opinion no-one who was in Boris’ cabinet is fit to run as PM. They supported him, applauded him, conspired with him until it became clear that they were going to be tainted with his lies and incompetence. The only reason any of them are speaking out now is for self serving, skin saving, purposes. I could never again ever vote tory. I could never vote for a party whose judgement was so skewed that they thought he was fit to lead the country.
No to Truss, No to Sunak, and No to anyone else who genuflected before the Boris altar. If any if those self servers become our PM then we are likely to be subjected to more of the same. They are not to be trusted.

I am hearing good things about Tugendhat but, honestly, when your claim to fame is having the biggest bar bill in the officers mess, is this really what you want?

Please don’t knock my politics. I did what I thought was right, the same as you all did but now I am politically homeless. I like what I hear from Angela Raynor, Jess Phillips, and Lisa Nandy but I struggle to vote for a party who want to decimate women’s rights. Kier Starmer’s statement that he will not look to rejoin the EU is also worrying.

God help us all!

It's a very stong diverse field, strong intellects, unusual backstories. Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Black, Brown, Immigrant, UK born, private and state schools all in the mix. Zaheed Nahawi was super competent overseeing the vaccine rollout. Tugenhadt has an impressive military cv, is telegenic, with Blairite zeal. Badenoch, in only five years as an mp, has made a real impression. Mordaunt stood up to doormat May's disastrous EU proposals, did that cool backflip off the 3 metre board on live tv, and has risen from nothing. Rishi (for me) has been to happy to aimlessly splash the cash. Tending towards Mordaunt, but want to here more from Braverman and Badenoch....and if it is her -
a bright, black, immigrant, anti-woke, women (who served fries at MacDonald's), would probably not be the opponent labour would choose (Party member). ps. Labour need to up its game in the diversity stakes.

Absolutely agree with your last comment.

Member here- as ex armed forces I like Tom T, would also be happy with Rishi.

youngerself · 12/07/2022 23:08

I got my email today telling me I could vote
Tugenhat or Sunak for me - leaning towards Tugenhat

JemimaPuddleducksWaddle · 12/07/2022 23:11

He was a dahm good soldier by all accounts if you ask those that served with him.

People moan that they want people who have had a previous life and aren't just career politicians and then when said people come along things are found to tear them apart.

Cherryblossoms85 · 12/07/2022 23:12

Not a member. If I was, tugendhat or really anyone who isn't massively right wing. I'm one of the many political orphans who doesn't want to vote labour or conservative, and what's the point of the lib Dems ....

Misstes · 12/07/2022 23:16

Simply someone who could follow their own bloody covid rules like the rest of us did. What’s the point in getting rid of Boris to replace him with another over privileged liar who think their above there own policies.

TomPinch · 12/07/2022 23:22

I'm not a Tory member or voter. But I have three questions for the Tories.

  1. The candidates other than Sunak want to cut taxes. Are people in the Tory party asking how those tax cuts will be funded?
  1. What do people think about scrapping net zero?
  1. I get the impression that Tugendhat is popular because he's a 'good egg and ex army'. Is it just that?
Purrfecto · 12/07/2022 23:22

First choice Tugenhat, then Mordaunt.

Definitely no to Sunak or Truss, can’t stand either.
Sunak has been chancellor and look at the mess the country is in, eat out to help out etc. He’s been fined over Partygate and I don’t think someone that wealthy being PM would be good for the party at all. That’s all before his wife’s tax avoidance in the UK and his green card.

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 12/07/2022 23:26

I'm not a tory either although would have voted for Rory Stuart against Corbyn. I thought the whole premise of MN is discussion and debate. I'm genuinely fascinated why people vote in a particular way so the pp commenting favourably about Suella B and her desire to slash benefits piqued my interest. Why on earth would someone feel that way ?
Fwiw the tory subreddit is an excellent place to debate, far more open minded than the labour ones (there are several) and MN actually, which can be vitriolic to say the least.

darlingdodo · 12/07/2022 23:26

Not a member. Tugendhat seems like a decent human being. We need someone steady, intelligent, who has a world view, can communicate, is without hubris and wants what is best for all of us, not just their wealthy, well connected mates. Someone who understands that people in receipt of benefits aren't scrounging dole cheats. Someone who knows what a woman is.

DdraigGoch · 12/07/2022 23:27

I'm a lapsed member so won't have a vote. If I did it would be for Kemi Badenoch. I don't want Mordant anywhere near the levers of power.

xalo · 12/07/2022 23:29

A choice between Tom T and Kemi B would be fantastic! Win win! ( not a member though)

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 12/07/2022 23:30

It's interesting that Tugendhat who is seen as a bit bland by some media commentators isn't subjected to the same disdain as Starmer who is equally bland in some respects.

SushiShopSearch · 12/07/2022 23:42

Penny Mordaunt thinks transwomen are women so she's' a huge no no.

Your view has no relevance unless you are a party member though.

*To ask again, if posting please state if you are a party member or not.

I did not intend to start a general thread on preferred candidates - though obviously anyone is free to post.

The point is to ascertain the perspectives of PARTY MEMBERS.

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 13/07/2022 00:02

Party member.
I'll vote for whoever has impressed me most in terms of understanding and committing to protecting women's rights. I liked Javid, but Badenoch is good. Basically #anyonebutpenny
