How much is your monthly phone bill?

I'm with 3 Mobile, unlimited data. Was paying £24 a month but it's just gone up to £29 a month, SIM only. I can't afford this every month, I'm going to cancel it even though I know there will be a fee attached. I'm only in the contract until September so hopefully it won't be too high.
Just interested to know what sort of prices people are paying, I'd like something with as much data as possible as I use it a lot, minutes and texts are less important.

@sashh I agree I don't need a top of the range phone (teens do though, its important to them) but at no point will I have a spare 4-500 to buy one outright, so the only way to get a smartphone is to get a contract and end up paying more overall. Its the same with a lot of things - every winter I spend £40 on boots and they're ruined by the end and I need a new pair the next winter. If I spent £100 they would probably last 5y+ but I dont have £100. So we are where we are

But you're more likely to be able to buy decent boots if you're not paying for such expensive phone contracts. You'd only need a minor downgrade in phone expense to free up the extra £60 for longer lasting boots.

If your teens are expecting high end phones, they have to have them for Christmas and/or birthdays, or earn some of their own money to pay for them rather than being given phones that are unaffordable at the expense of more important household expenses.

@BigYellowElephant
You need the good boots, your teens do not need the latest phones. Learning to have what is affordable rather than what is fashionable is a good gift to give them.

PAYG 20/month unlimited everything

Do your teens realise that you are struggling for suitable winter footwear because they have the latest phones.

You would be teaching them a useful life lesson.

sashh · 11/07/2022 11:52

@BigYellowElephant how often do they need the latest phone? A phone should last a few years, if they are used to getting a new one every 18 months then have no incentive to look after them.

Also how much data are they using, if you have WiFi then they don't need much data they only need it out of the house.

You are not doing them any favours.

Sit them down and go through the figures. Tell them when the contract ends you are going sim only. They have already got expensive phones if they want to keep upgrading then they need to pay for them themselves.

Oh my god I feel like a mug now! I pay £86 a month for mine and my teens phones - that includes two iPhone 12s though and 100gb data each. By the time the contracts up she will definitely be ready for another upgrade and I've got two toddlers so my phones usually full of cracks by the end of my contract and needs another one too. How are you all paying so little? Do you buy the phone outright and isn't that like £7-800?

Get a good chinese/far east phone for 2-300 £.... And then the cheapest sim only that suits...

I've done this several times... I'm paying a third /or a quarter what my friends are paying

I've been in this position... What I did... I bought one last cheap pair of boots... And every Monday morning I put 2£ into a money box... I didn't miss that... And then when anniversary came to buy boots... Had £100... Theyve lasted ages!

I'm on ID mobile, with a phone I have 30gb data and I pay £16pm
