I'm with 3 Mobile, unlimited data. Was paying £24 a month but it's just gone up to £29 a month, SIM only. I can't afford this every month, I'm going to cancel it even though I know there will be a fee attached. I'm only in the contract until September so hopefully it won't be too high.
Just interested to know what sort of prices people are paying, I'd like something with as much data as possible as I use it a lot, minutes and texts are less important.

I'm sim only with Sky.

Unlimited data and unlimited calls £10 a month.

They offered a new deal of 6gb data which rolls over and unlimited calls for £6 a month so I've switched to that.

O2 £15.49 a month, off contract and I wouldn't sign up for another. They always push this big air time plans for unlimited everything and I don't use it. 15gb data plenty for me.

That's expensive for O2. There's currently a sim only deal of £8 for 20gb on O2. Check uswitch

sashh · 10/07/2022 08:50

£3 a month with EE

The longer you stay with them the more discount you get so full price this would be £19. This is SIM only, unlimited calls and texts and 40 GB data.

I think they probably have me for life now.

SummerPuddings · 10/07/2022 08:52

Have you never thought to phone up and try to get a better deal? £40 for SIM only is ridiculous!

Oh my god I feel like a mug now! I pay £86 a month for mine and my teens phones - that includes two iPhone 12s though and 100gb data each. By the time the contracts up she will definitely be ready for another upgrade and I've got two toddlers so my phones usually full of cracks by the end of my contract and needs another one too. How are you all paying so little? Do you buy the phone outright and isn't that like £7-800?

I just bought a new phone outright for £450 (not an Iphone, that's your first mistake if you want to save money). My last phone I had for over 3 years so it worked out a lot cheaper than getting a contract for 2 years and upgrading straight away.

I don't let my toddler play on my phone but mine did get one crack, I just used it anyway as they don't affect the use. I upgraded because the battery started to go, but I probably could have managed another 6 months if necessary.

vegang · 10/07/2022 09:18

£10 SIM only
15GB, unlimited social media, unlimited calls, unlimited texts

Adversity · 10/07/2022 09:20

£12.50 with virgin sim only with everything. I’m going to ring and negotiate later after reading the £7 deal someone has.

mrsfoof · 10/07/2022 09:24

£8 with O2. 20Gb data (which is plenty as I have WiFi broadband at home / work).

Ireolu · 10/07/2022 09:29

EE 10/month 15gb data unlimited everything. Got them to match DHs giffgaff deal. Sim only. Have been with them for years so I get them to match whatever I can get elsewhere or I tell them I am going. Have never heard of smarty but may be using their rates for bargaining at next upgrade on the basis of what I have seen on this thread!

Madcats · 10/07/2022 11:28

We've recently bought DD(15) a 256GB refurbed unlocked iPhone XS for just short of £270. She'll probably have it for 2-3 years paying £7/month for 5GB data (we have wifi).

So it will be costing £438 (or £18.25/month) if she keeps it for 2 years or £522 (or £14.50/month) if it lasts 3 years.

I think we've bought two new batteries in the past decade (and a new screen).

I never buy the latest handset and certainly wouldn't for a school child, mine had second hand until they left school. They pay for their own top ups from pocket money.
I've also never let my toddlers when I had them anywhere near my phone!
Mine is cracked at the back because I'm clumsy but as long as it works it's not a problem. DH cracked his screen and paid for a replacement, it was about £60 I think.

BalloonsAndWhistles · 10/07/2022 11:50

We have an EE family plan with 3 mobiles. It’s £79 a month. I can’t remember the exact details of everyone’s plans. I’ve got 1gb of data and we’re still paying off my phone. DS’s is £9, sim only, don’t know how much data. DH is unlimited data which was done deliberately so he can give me and DS data as and when we need it. It works pretty well.

FarmGirl78 · 10/07/2022 12:17

So many people seem lbinkered into getting the latest release phone. Why? If you're thinking about an upgrade ask yourself what does it do that your old phone didn't do? Do you need an S22 or whatever iphone? Or can you find a phone that does all you need for cheaper?

I use this website to compare phones and then pick which one I like most...

£15 for 25gb and unlimited texts and calls.

I have never changed my provider ever.

Is that because you don't mind paying more than you need to?

Scarecrowrowboat · 10/07/2022 12:37

£10 with Giffgaff

HerbaceousB0arder · 10/07/2022 13:19

Zero
Unlimited everything
Employee discount

bwfcchick88 · 10/07/2022 13:22

£10 with giffgaff for £15 a month. Also earned £97 last month posting on their community page!

ducktape · 10/07/2022 20:52

You could contact three to see if they will renegotiate early to keep you though you may end up tied in to a contract for another 12 months, DH was coming to end of contract a couple of weeks ago and they said they would match smarty deal of £6/month for unlimited calls & texts and 4gb of data with 1 month contract. In the end chose to go with smarty anyway as three charge extra for roaming and smarty don't. I have a smarty sim too which is £8/month for 80gb of data (was a special offer) but I don't use anything like that much

LaWench · 10/07/2022 20:56

Giffgaff - I am PAYG and barely use it so pay a tenner every 8 months or so.
DH and DD1 have the £10pm golden goody bag.
DD2 has the £6pm goody bag.

sashh · 11/07/2022 05:42

I think you should look at phones like you would buying a car.

iPhones are like the rolls Royce crossed with a Lamborghini, they get you places in style and possibly faster but they still use the same roads.

If you are a farmer a tractor might be better, sports cars are not much good for taking the kids to school.

No one actually needs an iphone.

When you take out a contract with a phone you are not getting a free handset you are paying for it, but your contract is probably 2 years and most people pay for the phone in the first year, the second year the difference between the sim only deal and your contract is pure profit.

@BigYellowElephant

Argos is selling the iphone 13 for £729.00, so three of those is £2187, the iphone 11 is under £429, they don't have a 12.

You are paying £86 a month = £1032, I assume your contract is 2 years so £2064 over 2 years, so buying three top of the range phones is only £123 a year more. I know you have to add on the actual cost of the contract or PAYG.

If you were to get the iphone 11 then 3 handsets are £1287, over 2 years that's £777 less, that's £32 a month you would have to play with to negotiate a contract.

If you switched to another phone, you would have even more. Argos has the latest Samsung Galaxy for £369.99 (1109.97 for 3)

But you don't have to buy three new phones every year. I've assumed it's 3 phones, if you can make your phone last 3 years, which they should last at least 5 years you could rotate buying one new handset each year.

And that's with top of the range phones, do you really need them? You can get a smart phone for £40. Your teens might complain but you could potentially pay for a holiday with the saving.
