To send back that Jubilee book?

My DS came back with the Jubilee book this week. I didn't know anything about it (the Jubilee wasn't something that I was remotely bothered by) but apparently every family with a primary aged child is getting one. I'm massively annoyed by this book... It strikes me as an enormous waste of money, especially at a time when so many people/organisations/schools etc are struggling. I also hate having patriotism shoved down my (and my kids') throat. But it's mainly the money...

WIBU to send the book back (haven't figured out to whom yet. I'm guessing not the queen) with a note saying 'no, thank you'?

How do you think sending it back is going to save money?

SoupDragon · 09/07/2022 20:53

How will sending it back make any kind of point about "the money"?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:53

It's obviously not saving money. I'm just making a point, having a little tiny protest.

not even one per household. We now have two of these bastard books.

bullywee · 09/07/2022 20:53

If you don't want it, donate it to a charity shop.

NoSquirrels · 09/07/2022 20:54

What pissed me off most about that book is the total lack of acknowledgment or credit to the illustrator/s.

rodham · 09/07/2022 20:55

I was really irritated by ours too. Like you say, such a waste of money. We put ours in the book bank.

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:55

I suppose my note could be more detailed explaining why I'm sending it back and why I'm making that protest?

Lancrelady80 · 09/07/2022 20:56

Nice gesture but massive waste of money.

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:57

I think if all of us who are disgusted by this book sent it back, it might make a point. Who's with me?!

inpixiehollow · 09/07/2022 20:57

If you don't want it feel free to post it to me -and I'll cover the cost..😂 my daughter didn't get one as she is not school age yet. I believe they are selling on ebay?

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 09/07/2022 20:57

You sound like you want to make a point.

If you return the book it will be binned.
So what does that say?

Maybe email your MP? Tell them that it's a waste of taxpayers ' money and , if you're daring, send the book to them?

Your school is but a hub and will just be doing what it has been told.

ByeByeBoree · 09/07/2022 20:57

Send it to whomever you wish with a note explaining why. The Queen would do. You know her address, don't you? So send it. It's not a crime to send books and notes to the queen. It'll make you feel better.

Fullofhotcrossbuns · 09/07/2022 20:58

What is wrong with you?

5foot5 · 09/07/2022 20:58

Well I don't have a primary aged child so don't know the book you are talking about, but I have voted YABU.

Firstly because it sounds like it is not yours to give away, it is your DS's book.

Also I think it is kind of nice to have some sort of souvenir. I am sure I still have a Silver Jubilee crown coin somewhere that was given to all the school children at that time.

drpet49 · 09/07/2022 20:59

Oh get a life

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/07/2022 21:00

Whether you agree with it or not it is part of history. If you don't want it give it away. Nobody will care if you send it back.

AppleHa · 09/07/2022 21:00

My sister got a silver Jubilee mug in 1977. My Dad got a coronation mug in 1953. Would you have sent those back? Or is it just books you object to?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 21:00

@Fullofhotcrossbuns um, nothing I don't think? That's a bit harsh... Care to elaborate what you think is wrong with me?

YANBU. The book isn't at all child friendly, and who cares about the Jubilee anyway? Massive waste of money - charity shops are going to be overrun.

rodham · 09/07/2022 21:01

The OP doesn't need to get a life, she's making a valid point. How many primary school children are there - how much did it cost?! There's better things for money to be spent on surely

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:55

Yeah cos the school will really give a shit about that.

The school were told to hand them out by the government. Sent it to your mp if you really want to make that point, but if you send it to school with your protest note you will look a twat to the staff.

Womencanlift · 09/07/2022 21:03

The school won’t take much notice of your protest so go ahead but don’t think it will have the impact you think it will.

Send it back to the new Education minister if you must.

Have you asked your child if they want to keep it? Maybe they do. It is their book after all

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 21:03

@WishILivedInThrushGreen i absolutely want to make a point. I don't blame the school at all. But, yeah, it probably is a complete waste of time.

My daughter was really excited to get it, I thought it was quite decent, she was really interested in it and we read it a few times, its now on her bookshelf with her favourite books.
i did think it was a waste of money but a lot of kids enjoyed it so hey ho.
