To send back that Jubilee book?

My DS came back with the Jubilee book this week. I didn't know anything about it (the Jubilee wasn't something that I was remotely bothered by) but apparently every family with a primary aged child is getting one. I'm massively annoyed by this book... It strikes me as an enormous waste of money, especially at a time when so many people/organisations/schools etc are struggling. I also hate having patriotism shoved down my (and my kids') throat. But it's mainly the money...

WIBU to send the book back (haven't figured out to whom yet. I'm guessing not the queen) with a note saying 'no, thank you'?

I'm not remotely royalist, or sentimental but I think it was nice. My dc loved being given a whole book, for free, just for them. I think their teachers said how it was one for each child.

Floydthebarber · 09/07/2022 21:16

And they do get other books. They've come home with a few things. The Cave was a big hit.

If you don't want it feel free to post it to me -and I'll cover the cost..😂 my daughter didn't get one as she is not school age yet. I believe they are selling on ebay?

They're selling for £5 on ebay second hand! I had two but gave them away. Wish I had sold them now!

rodham · 09/07/2022 21:18

@ImJustNotMeAnymore you're absolutely right, it's definitely the unpatriotic who are to blame for this country's problems.

If we all waved flags at once then we could power giant wind farms for free, which would really help with the energy cost crisis.

Comedycook · 09/07/2022 21:18

My DD loved it. I thought it was great that all the kids got one.

QueenOfHiraeth · 09/07/2022 21:19

Sending it back is just waste - a totally empty gesture.
Bear in mind this was not given to you, it was sent to your child as a keepsake and what if they want it at some point? If you must get rid then send it someone who wants it

I got a beautiful silver jubilee mug before my first birthday. My mother bought me a ladybird Charles and Di royal wedding book which I absolutely lapped up. I'm a primary school teacher and dutifully handed out the jubilee books a couple of weeks ago. However, I am a republican and I know my Year 1 class will reach adulthood and be perfectly able to form their own opinion of the monarchy regardless of the book.

WimbyAce · 09/07/2022 21:20

I was q pleased with the book and we also got a mug. Little one says the book is boring but I think she will be more interested when she's older. Find it bizarre you are moaning about a nice free memento for the children.

ByeByeBoree · 09/07/2022 21:20

I've not seen it but others are saying it teaches children about the royal family.

If that's the case, maybe it's a good thing after all. But how do they manage to explain inbreeding, Nazi-ism and paedophilia in child-appropriate language? I mean, are there pictures?? 😮😮😱

SkeletonFight · 09/07/2022 21:20

Donate it to a library.

MarshaMelrose · 09/07/2022 21:21

It strikes me as an enormous waste of money,

So you're going to pay postage to sent it or a letter and waste more money? You'd be better to give it to a charity shop and the postage you saved, put in the charity box.

Or if you really want to pay postage, post it to me, with a ranty letter if you like for my blue bin, and I'll happily have it. I never get anything for free. 😔

juliainthedeepwater · 09/07/2022 21:22

The worst thing about that royalist propaganda is it wasn’t even GOOD royalist propaganda - just so shockingly poorly produced and yes most likely for an eye watering amount of money!

beautifulworldwhereareyou · 09/07/2022 21:22

YANBU, honestly I would love it if a parent of a child in my class did this. I absolutely hate the monarchy and resented having to teach lessons on “the queen’s greatest achievement”.

ByeByeBoree · 09/07/2022 21:22

Send it without a stamp and then the recipient has to pay postage. 👌

I think if all of us who are disgusted by this book sent it back, it might make a point. Who's with me?!

The Queen will never see it; it’s doubtful she’ll even hear about it. And while people may agree with you on Mumsnet, quite a few won’t bother to follow through.

JanDec · 09/07/2022 21:24

Wow you are really rude op. It was gift, if you don't like it be gracious about it. Do you really wish to bother the school by sending it back? I mean do you think school staff have nothing better to do than be extras in your little staged protest?

You say it's a waste of money? Well, someone will have made money with it and paid taxes on that. Also, do you only buy absolute essentials? If not you re wasting money yourself.

Stop being so attention seeking.

I'm really surprised that there are people whose children enjoyed this book! My kids were really excited about it but it was so awful they gave up on it after a few pages. I'm not at all anti Royal, but it was a bit much in places wasn't it? I didn't think the characters were very relatable either. Lovely illustrations though!

Starlightstarbright1 · 09/07/2022 21:30

Yep send it back with a note.. then when you have a serious point to make they can all say thats that parent..

Honestly do you really think schools have nothing better to do ??

What are you suggesting about those people's children?

ByeByeBoree · 09/07/2022 21:33

Satanism?

Sylvaniandream · 09/07/2022 21:33

I have a daughter at primary and we didn't get a book.... I'll have yours if you like!

itsgoodtobehome · 09/07/2022 21:33

I have been reading it myself and I am finding it really interesting. I am learning a lot about our history and the commonwealth etc that I didn't know before. Maybe give it a read before you dismiss it.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 09/07/2022 21:34

I was pleasantly surprised that I thought it was a well thought out book full of history. Not sure why you’d be so cross about it - encouraging dc to read and understand their country’s modern history seems like a good thing to me.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 09/07/2022 21:34

Yes, agree with if you don't want it donate to a charity shop.

twilightermummy · 09/07/2022 21:34

I thought exactly the same as you op and I got lumbered with two of them! I didn’t think of sending them back though. They’re hidden in a draw currently and will work their way to charity at some stage.
