To send back that Jubilee book?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:51

My DS came back with the Jubilee book this week. I didn't know anything about it (the Jubilee wasn't something that I was remotely bothered by) but apparently every family with a primary aged child is getting one. I'm massively annoyed by this book... It strikes me as an enormous waste of money, especially at a time when so many people/organisations/schools etc are struggling. I also hate having patriotism shoved down my (and my kids') throat. But it's mainly the money...

WIBU to send the book back (haven't figured out to whom yet. I'm guessing not the queen) with a note saying 'no, thank you'?

YABU.
Just because you don't want the book. Doesn't mean everyone else should be deprived of the chance to own a piece of history and memorabilia to celebrate the jubilee.
Some families may not have the spare cash to buy anything to commemorate the jubilee, at least they have the free book to enjoy with their children. My children have loved looking through the book and have asked to go on a trip to London to see the sights, it's been a great book to read and learn from, not to mention a keepsake as well.
If you don't want it, just donate it so that others can enjoy it.

All our kids were really excited to receive it. I thought it was a lovely book and really educational. They all knew about the jubilee and the book was a great historical resource.

This.

I think there's much bigger and more deserving issues in the country/world to get worked up about.

Crazyhousewife · 11/07/2022 19:02

Pass it on to home edders, we never even got offered one of these

WishingWell5 · 11/07/2022 19:39

I loved the book. I wasn't born in this country, but my parents were. And I am not ashamed to be proud of being British. Honestly, the scorn that some Brits have for their own country and history astonishes me. It isn't propaganda it's patriotism. Being patriotic is not a bad thing. We need, and our children need, a sense of solidarity and pride. Britain stands for so much good. Of course there are bad things, that is the case of everywhere.

There are an estimated 46 million slaves living right now, today, more then ever in history. There are literally parts of the world where there are baby farms, with babies sold for organ harvesting, There are still Africans shipped out with the promise of a better life in Europe who end up sold into slavery. In fact migration and the desire to achieve a new and better life is the cause of a large proportion of slavery today. Where do these people want to come? Shock- often Britain. Human trafficking is estimated to be a $150 billion dollar industry. There are right now babies and children being sold to traffickers and paedophiles every day. In some parts of West Africa almost 100% of those trafficked are children, worldwide it's about 25%.

I understand people can care about what they want to care about, but I do not see how we can say the British, and specifically the English and the monarchy should be ashamed, resentful, apologetic and disgusted with their selves, their ancestors and their history. We shouldn't be, and it's no way to live or raise our children.

blahblahblahspoons · 12/07/2022 17:01

If there was proper funding in schools. If children with mental health problems weren't told to wait for 3 years before getting to the top of the CAMHS list and help they desperately need (if they don't just give up while waiting), then I'd think it was a nice idea an extra, something well meaning and lovely.

As it is, it just highlights the horrendously stark problems with schooling in this country and that we are a country of 'haves' and 'have nots'.

blahblahblahspoons · 12/07/2022 17:04

I wonder how teachers who are paying for books, pens etc out of their own salaries because there's no school budget left feel about this.

If there was no problem with funding in schools it wouldn't be an issue of course.

I have not heard people saying that the English/ Monarchy should be ashamed of their history, more that the truth should be told about the history of this Country. Warts and all! Something they do not seem willing or able to do, for some reason.

PuckeredArseFace · 12/07/2022 17:19

Keep the book. Use it as a talking point. Let your son decide what HE wants to do with HIS book when he is older
Write a letter to your local councillor/MP to register your disapproval

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 12/07/2022 18:07

missing the point here but we home educate and my son is 11 and technically y6
he didnt get one, it it just for school kids?

Zwellers · 12/07/2022 19:06

Waste of money that could have been better spent .Tempted to raise an foi to ask how much taxpayers money has been wasted and what the benefits are meant to be, other than the indoctrination of children. Ebay will be swamped and they will be worthless and end up in the bin. So a total waste of paper.

chocolatemademefat · 12/07/2022 19:10

Whether or not you’re a fan of the royals a lot of people are.

why must someone come along to suck the joy out of every occasion?

Zwellers · 12/07/2022 19:13

chocolatemademefat fair enough if you are a roy fan. I am not. Therefore why should my taxes be spent on something I dont support and in no way benefits my children.

We could all say that though - why should my tax be spent on - take your pick of multiple things from UC to regeneration of urban areas? It's not all about you as an individual.

That's a silly argument

Of course it is. There’s very little government spending I approve of - or by my local council. Barely any of it benefits me but I understand how taxation and collective responsibility works.

Palamon · 12/07/2022 21:10

My friend gave hers back to the school. Quite simply and without a fuss. She was not the only one.

I am with her - don't assume we are all royalists or want our children to learn history with a monarchist bent. I'd rather the 12 million quid it cost the DofE (and it was printed in Italy) was spent on something less biased. Or something more worthy. Parents should have been allowed to opt-in and pay a nominal fee towards it.

Sparklybutold · 12/07/2022 21:12

The book literally epitomises what the RF are. Out of touch and a complete waste of money.

paulaparticles · 12/07/2022 21:33

Massive waste of money was put into the bin Should have had an option to opt out.

You did. You could have just handed it back. At the very least you could have dropped it in to a charity shop. What kind of message do you think you’re giving your child by putting a book in the bin? A book that wasn’t even yours.

Don't be ridiculous. Honestly grow up.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 12/07/2022 23:25

Yanbu. Just looked it up - it was funded by the DfE to the tune of £12 million. Zahawi must have a magic money tree outside his heated stables.

Wafflesnsniffles · 12/07/2022 23:29

Donate it to a charity shop. Lots of families wanted a copy (no idea why but they did) but werent eligible so any copies in a charity shop should sell.

reallypuzzledoverthis · 12/07/2022 23:51

My boys didn’t get one as theirs is an academy school so I’ll have it 😊

Yes, excellent idea.

Perhaps the RSPB (how ironic!) Sandringham branch given the disgusting info reported here:

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/15/sandringham-estate-police-barred-investigating-wildlife-crime

Anything about that in this precious book?

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 15/07/2022 10:07

OP, YADNBU. Any protest is better than none. Solidarity with the comrades.

That £12million could have been spent on the NHS. But noooooo.
