To send back that Jubilee book?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:51

My DS came back with the Jubilee book this week. I didn't know anything about it (the Jubilee wasn't something that I was remotely bothered by) but apparently every family with a primary aged child is getting one. I'm massively annoyed by this book... It strikes me as an enormous waste of money, especially at a time when so many people/organisations/schools etc are struggling. I also hate having patriotism shoved down my (and my kids') throat. But it's mainly the money...

WIBU to send the book back (haven't figured out to whom yet. I'm guessing not the queen) with a note saying 'no, thank you'?

Definitely with you, it’s so badly designed as well!

Tonkerbea · 09/07/2022 21:35

YANBU, they could have sent a few to libraries/school libraries, and sent the rest of the money to food banks.

The RF PR team don't seem adept at reading the room. Children are going to go hungry as the cost of living crisis worsens. I might eBay DD's book then donate proceeds to Trussel Trust, I think that would be a better form of protest OP.

sashagabadon · 09/07/2022 21:36

It’s a nice thing! Some people just live to moan. Plus it’s not yours, it belongs to your child who may well be wondering where it is when they turn 30. Just put in their memory box or whatever you have for stuff like this and forget about it.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 09/07/2022 21:36

I'm not sure how I feel about the book. On one hand a free book for children is wonderful but on the other...£12 m is a lot of money and equates the pot the government put aside for helping vulnerable children during the lockdowns.

It also irked the staff at the school I work in because we have run out of paper and can't afford to buy any more this academic year. Or pay our above-and-beyond support staff a decent salary. Or pay for supply teachers so end up using unqualified TAs to teach groups of those same vulnerable children...

Amipreg1 · 09/07/2022 21:37

You sound like hard work.

It was given to your child so surely it's up to them if they want it or not.

If you really can't bear to have it in your house just give it away/to a charity shop.

jollymollygoesdancing · 09/07/2022 21:37

Womencanlift why do you assume you know what us Scots want? Hahaha

Imjustnotmeanymore that’s why we want independence! to live in our country and not have to be involved in bullshit to do with the queen lol

and I don’t know who made the point but 100% it’s outdated, my gran fucking loves the queen as do her generation, I highly doubt kids these days know who she is

NeedAHoliday2021 · 09/07/2022 21:37

If you’re not interested, put it in the loft as in 200 years an untouched version will be worth something.

You can't however speak for all Scots.

I’ve not seen the book, but surely it’s just a nice memento for the kids. And of course each child should get one (rather than one to share per family). It’s a gift to them, not the parent. I’d prefer it if the monarchy disappeared, but it’s not going to happen, so let the kids have a keepsake. They can decide what to do with THEIR gift down the line.

Samcro · 09/07/2022 21:40

Confused
wasn’t the book given to your child not you?

Ridingoutthewaves · 09/07/2022 21:41

@Twizbe if they actually learnt about British history they would be great, not a white washed version that glorifies colonialism and Empire built on the backs of slavery.

FlamingoYellow · 09/07/2022 21:42

SkeletonFight · 09/07/2022 21:31

What are you suggesting about those people's children?

I wasn't really suggesting anything about them! I'm just very surprised as I didn't think it was particularly child friendly. My eldest was completely obsessed with the royal family around the jubilee and loves reading, so I thought he would enjoy this but it didn't hold his attention at all.

ZimZamZoom · 09/07/2022 21:42

😂

Sometimeswinning · 09/07/2022 21:43

It's your child's book. Not yours. That's all you need to think about. I hate that my kids like David Walliams books. But they are their books.

onlythreenow · 09/07/2022 21:43

I think if all of us who are disgusted by this book sent it back, it might make a point. Who's with me?!

And what "point" is it actually making? The books are already out there, it's too late. Also, while you and a few other MNers might be "disgusted" by the book there will be millions who like it.

ZimZamZoom · 09/07/2022 21:43

The 😂was in response to @ByeByeBoree

ExtraOnion · 09/07/2022 21:46

In 1977 .. I was 6. We were all given a silver jubilee coin , I loved it. I came from a poor family, not a pot to piss in - that coin was the nicest thing I had, I treasured it.
You couldn’t spend it, it certainly wasn’t really silver - and you can (now) pick them up on e-bay for a couple of quid.
For Six year old me, with the dysfunctional / abusive home life, I felt like The Queen had personally sent me something, it was joyful.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 09/07/2022 21:46

12 million pounds was the cost to the nation of printing and distributing that book to every child in the UK.

While many, many, MANY children live in grinding poverty on a day to day basis, I think that effectively asking them to doff their cap to the lady in The Big House is tone deaf at best but mostly outright offensive.

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 21:47

@Thursday37 again to you... You have no idea how much I value the importance of books. In fact, books for children is literally my job (and my passion). Thanks for calling me a twat, though.

To be clear... free books for kids = yes please! This particular book, about the queen and her reign in order to commemorate a jubilee I have no care about, which cost the country 12 million pounds at a time when people can't feed their kids or heat their homes, no thanks.

I also don't think I have to leave the country because I don't like the monarchy, but thanks to whoever suggested it 😁.

Happy to pay postage for a jubilee book that’s not wanted to be sent to me!

GoodJanetBadJanet · 09/07/2022 21:47

That's very true too. Whatever you think of kids books, I've never been one for censoring them.
I've always been a massive reader, if someone for example had said I couldn't read Enid Blyton.cos racism, Roald Dahl cos anti Semite, or Judy Blimey because it's full of smut and filth I wouldn't have been impressed!
You're not the target audience so back off

LadyOfTheCanyon · 09/07/2022 21:48

Judy Blimey?Grin

GoodJanetBadJanet · 09/07/2022 21:48

Judy Blimey 😂 Stupid autocorrect should read Blume lol

Gingerella55 · 09/07/2022 21:48

My child wasn't even offered the book. I would have liked her to have one. I don't see why children in Scotland should miss out, she is our Queen too.

Bloody SNP.

I have just visited the south east of England and it was so lovely seeing all the Union Jack's flying everywhere, and a lot of shops still had jubilee displays in their window. We saw practically nothing like that up here, it was rubbish.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 09/07/2022 21:49

@LadyOfTheCanyon
Cross posted, stupid autocorrect 🤣
