To think any man that wants to ‘breastfeed’…

Is seriously shady and I’m absolutely incredulous that LLL is encouraging this?

I Didn’t want to breast feed due to past sexual abuse. There was no support available to me from LLL or anyone else, I was still criticised by HCP.

Palmfrond · 29/06/2022 09:31

I’ve got nothing nice to say about this, except that itwas an interesting thought experiment to read transgender dad Trevor MacDonald’s words in newscasting legend Trevor McDonald’s voice

Why would someone who doesn’t want to BF need help from LLL?

I’m with you OP. And Helen Joyce was right when she said the ideological capture of big and previously sensible organisations like LLL is so complete that they’re beyond saving and we’ll need to build from the ground up to start again creating the support women, biological woman, and their babies, need and deserve.

I’ve just emailed my MP. Can I start a petition? What can I do about this?

I hadn’t thought about that before but you’re right. I will never trust these organisations now. It’s also in NHS guidance (along with the guidance that trans people giving birth should get a private room, when us mere mothers don’t)

It's all about propping up male fantasies. Nothing to do with nourishing a baby.

3peassuit · 29/06/2022 09:57

Wouldn’t a trans woman’s breast milk be full of artificial hormones and dangerous for an infant?

Of course. But who cares about babies? They’re handy props.

crowsfeet57 · 29/06/2022 10:06

Surely any man who wants to breastfeed needs psychological help.

Hallyup89 · 29/06/2022 10:06

How is it shady or child abuse ffs?

A transman has the equipment to nourish the baby effectively if they have given birth. Breast is best and all that.

And heaven forbid a transwomen actually wants to do the thing a woman was designed to do. There's always so many complaints on here that transwomen aren't women, and whilst I agree to an extent, I cannot begrudge someone who's actually trying to live the life of a woman wanting to feed their baby that way.

RoyKentsChestHair · 29/06/2022 10:09

regardless of the impact that said feeding will have on the actual baby. As long as the TW gets to validate their lady feels, all good.

Two separate issues here. TW “chestfeeding” is bizarre at best, dangerous at worst. TM breastfeeding is just a bit confusing, but more for the person than the baby. However Trevor Macdonald ended up with a baby, he’s clearly decided to breastfeed and why the hell not (if he isn’t taking any hormones)? I just hope he’s got the right mental health support because that’s gotta be confusing (identify as a man but wants to do something which is probably the epitome of womanhood?!).

As for LLL saying they support those people on those range of scenarios… I doubt it. Probably similar to how the NHS says it supports breastfeeding mothers.

And why shouldn't they be able to? You know there's been countless amounts of research done on this particular subject and I'm sure whoever is doing this is weighing up the benefits Vs risks. Everything you do for you child has some degree of risk.

I'm sure it is only trans men and AFAB people who can breastfeed and any hormones or medication they take or have taken for their transition would be taken into account. Much like AFAB women must be careful of what medications they take before and during breastfeeding. Hope that helps

I'm really sorry you weren't supported through this. Hopefully advice and training for HCPs increases now that they're claiming to support everyone

Even the NHS says they’re not sure the milk is safe. Given it’s artificial and laced with hormones, I would say it probably isn’t.

Lactation can be stimulated in persons who haven't given birth quite safely, they wouldn't be encouraging it otherwise.

theotherfossilsister · 29/06/2022 10:17

If they used to be a woman and have the ability to breast feed I really see no problem with it. Their choice how to feed their baby, surely.

Have you got a source for that?
