to say Niles was pathetic and Daphne was wrong to marry him

For some reason Niles seems to be held in great affection - but why?

He was so weak-willed with Maris - for someone who claims to be an expert in human behaviour, it took him years and years to face up to the obvious.

The way he went around smelling Daphne's hair secretly - how creepy would that be?? And what kind of man dumps his fiancee on their wedding day? Not to mention, he simply can't handle pressure - rumour has it, he even choked during his spelling bee.

Daphne should have stayed with Donny.

Agree.

PennyPinkPineapple · 25/06/2022 23:18

I also didn't like how Daphne changed once her and Niles got together. She went from loveable and whimsical to down right annoying really quickly!

BrylcreamBeret · 25/06/2022 23:19

You're bang out of order. He went through a tough time when Eddie killed his flour sack.

OwlinaTree · 25/06/2022 23:21

He did defend Maris's honour with the fencing instructor.

And put up with all Daphne's brothers.

And her secret eating 😂

SecretVictoria · 25/06/2022 23:22

That was the decline in the show for me. I thought Niles & Daphne treated Mel and Donnie atrociously. The writers had backed themselves into a corner though. The character change was hugely annoying too.

SnowWhitesSM · 25/06/2022 23:24

Wow, you're so out of order OP! I love that they finally got together!

FasterthanBolt · 25/06/2022 23:26

I liked that they got together but totally agree, her personality totally changed once they got married.

youngestisapsycho · 25/06/2022 23:26

Urgh, Donnie was awful!

Boxowine · 25/06/2022 23:26

The heart wants what the heart wants.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 25/06/2022 23:30

Nothing in the series was more annoying than Daphne's accent. Her accent sounded so false I was shocked to learn that the actress is actually a proper British! But yes, the Daphnia & Niles thing was odd.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 25/06/2022 23:31

Not sure what autocorrect was thinking there changing Daphne to Daphnia!

LargeDeviation · 25/06/2022 23:31

Frasier was far more centred and for all his faults, was fundamentally honest compared to his brother.

For all his grumbling, he took in his elderly father. Niles couldn't run away fast enough.

GilChesterton · 25/06/2022 23:31

But Niles was Corkmaster - Daphne couldn't resist that kind of raw power! And he knows when to reseason his crepe pan...

TBF, Frasier does pull Niles up on his unrealistic, unfair Daphne-worship in a really good episode.

PrincessFiorimonde · 25/06/2022 23:36

At first I found Daphne a bit annoying (and in the early days I thought the actress was an American putting on a fake English accent, so that just shows what I know) and couldn't see why urbane Niles was taken with her. But the idea of their relationship grew on me. I never thought Daphne was suited to Donny, though.

Keepyoursarcasmtoyourself · 25/06/2022 23:40

Don't really have anything to add but as the mother of a very anxious pre teen boy this makes me feel sad.

Not to mention, he simply can't handle pressure - rumour has it, he even choked during his spelling bee.

NashvilleQueen · 25/06/2022 23:43

Them getting together ended the show for me really. Never the same after that. But I love Niles in all his pompous neurotic madness

LargeDeviation · 25/06/2022 23:43

@GilChesterton Interesting perspective. However, you tried to steal Frasier's timeslot when he was ill - how rude! If I were you, I would go back to reminiscing about romping in the fens and spinneys of Surrey...

Not awful! He was nice. Just not very attractive 😂

I thought Frasier was a self-centred git who thought he was god's gift to women, but week after week he was proved wrong! (Though of course he did take in his father, which eventually taught him a bit of empathy - something that was strangely lacking in both brothers.)

Scautish · 25/06/2022 23:46

YABU OP

Team Niles here. I think he is an awesome character. And very human. I think it was a clever demonstration showing that just berceuse you understand the theory does not mean you will be able to apply it yourself in practice.

I find Frasier quite repellent.

Bunty55 · 25/06/2022 23:46

He was a lot funnier when he perved on her close up worshipped her from afar

LargeDeviation · 25/06/2022 23:47

@Keepyoursarcasmtoyourself Well, that's just Martin and Frasier's theory. According to Niles himself, it was at that moment he realised there was no word he could not spell.

She was from Essex trying to do Manchester accent. Agree it was terrible.
Martin was born in Blackpool!

Theawkwardblonde · 25/06/2022 23:48

I liked Daphne and Niles finally getting together.
However, I would have loved Niles to have ended up with Roz. They always had the best banter and jokey insults back and forth.

EmmaH2022 · 25/06/2022 23:49

OP "And what kind of man dumps his fiancee on their wedding day?"

Daphne dumped Donny on their wedding day.

anyway, I agree with pp. Niles went through a lot of trauma with his flour baby - burnt by the fire, run through with a fencing sword.

and this on top of having choked during his spelling bee.
